That's so 1980's...However, I do need to think more before sending a message rather than adding more messages because I realize I failed to address something ;)

I cant believe this is even a discussion- In order for this even to be rational we would have to expect the jets to make good decisions after releasing revis. We all know that doesnt happen. So why release a contract of a player that has been year in and out the damn best cb in the league. The guy never has a bad year he is always consistent and even if he has a bad game- none of us know it because his mere presence is enough to prevent qbs from throwing to that side of the field.

Like I said, I cant believe this is even a discussion. Im not willing to give up greatness for the potential of a few good players. Revis isnt the problem, his contract isnt the issue. Lets not make it one. Thats like the yanks getting rid of rivera!

The risk is the first and second turn into picks like that of Sanchez, your trusting the jets ability to judge draft talent which they have proven wrong year in and out.

If they made good decisions in the past I would agree with you but to let go of a guy like revis who has never proven anyone wrong about his talent its hard to give a guy like that up for your defense-

The issue isn't whether Revis is the problem, the question isn't if the team is better or worse without Revis.

There are just two Simple questions. 1) Can the Jets keep him after the 2013 season? will he want to stay? Remember he has the option to opt out of his contract after 2013 and become an unrestricted Free Agent.

    2) If The Jets aren't going to be able to keep him after the 2013 season then is it better to trade him before the 2013 season and get at least something for him, or let him walk after the 2013 season and get nothing.

Obviously if the answer to question one is yes the Jets can keep him after the 2013 season then answer 2 is moot. Because obviously you don't trade him if you believe you can keep him. But, If you don't believe you can keep him after 2013 then you have to at least consider shopping him to see what you can get in return.

Why couldnt the Jets keep him after 2013? There are a myriad of reasons, but from the Jets perspective, salary cap.

But from Revis view point there are a couple reasons that despit how much money the Jets were to throw his way that he may want to leave. The biggest of which is the question of how much Revis wants a SB ring and if he believes he can get it with the Jets. Does he want to stay a part of the Barnum and Bailey circus that has become the Jets over the past 2 seasons, or does he want to move to an organization who's actual year in and year out goal is to win the Superbowl and not just make headlines? In other words, does he believe Rex or does he believe the owner Woody? Does he feel slighted after not having the "bandaid" contract re-worked after the 2011 season ended? Does he hold the Jets for ransom only to bolt for another team?

Personally, I think Revis is gone after 2013 not by the teams choice, but by his. I could be wrong, I've never talked to him. But ask yourself, if it were the case that the Jets had less than a 25% chance of resigning Revis after 2013, and yes he will opt out of his contract after 2013, is it better to trade him? or get nothing for him when he walks?

Again, its not a question of if the team is better or worse With or Without Revis, it is a question of if the team can keep Revis after next year. The team is clearly better with Revis, but It's not just up to the team, but also Revis and his agent and if the Jets can afford to pay him what he demands, even if he's willing to stay?

I haven't read this thread at all, but trading Revis is a terrible idea. Unless of course, you are trying to give the Kotite years a rebirth.

good post- it will be his decision in the end anyway.

I just think that either way we will be able to get what we want for him. Whether its now or then. I really dont think the injury will affect him simply because he is not a guy who relies purely on his athletic ability he relies heavily on his mental ability. His positioning is probably the best i have ever seen in a corner. The angles he takes to block certain throwing lanes is just amazing to watch sometimes. Player like him come only so often. You see where i am coming from here.

If its his decision to walk then its his decision, i would feel better if it was his decision though not the jets to try to get more for him. I just dont see either way us getting less especially now for this draft class coming up where the talent may not be the best as in years past.

    You see what im saying?

I understand what your saying, but I believe your missing the point still. If Revis leaves after 2013 the Jets get nothing for him. Nadda, Nil, Zilch.

There are, in my eyes, only two reasons from an organizational point of view that you don't trade Revis. 1) You think you can contend in 2013 (we can't, too many holes and not enough cap space or draft picks to fill them adequately) or 2) you really believe you can resign him.

After 2013 if Revis opts out his contract states that he can not be franchised, and he is an unrestricted free agent which means no compensatory picks. AKA he walks and the Jets have nothing to show for it.

That's the reason for the question, if we had compensatory picks if he walked it would be a somewhat different matter.

I can understand a fans perspective of preferring it to be Revis's choice, but do you really want him to walk and have nothing to show for it?

i get your point, but i dont think it will get to the end of 2013. That would mean they did nothing to his contract at the end of this season which is almost guaranteed not to happen. The decision either way would be now because revis is looking at now not the end of his contract in 2013. I completely agree with you where I dont agree is that it will even get to the end of 2013 . This will all happen now. If we think revis isnt going to be looking to restructure something we are crazy

Don't trade someone who is a definite. Our front office has really sucked, for the most part, with their drafting. Keep the best Jet on the team.

Oh there will be talks this off season, but it will be clear pretty quickly how serious those talks are on both sides.

Obviously if something gets worked out fast before the draft there is zero point in trading Revis, you wouldn't want to.

The point is that if a deal isn't in place prior to the draft, do you trade him or not? There will be about 4 months between the end of this season and the draft for them to try to work something out. And as I've said many times in this thread, if something can be worked out then there is no point in trading him.

At no point was I suggesting trading him now (we couldn't anyways, it's past the trade deadline and he's on IR). The entire point is if, by the time the draft is close, do you pursue a deal with a team for a trade if Revis and company aren't willing to extend, or are asking a kings ransom (think 14-15 million or more per)...sorry no CB is worth top line QB money.

Don't get me wrong though, Revis is my favorite current Jet player. But I'm a Jets fan first, a Revis (or any other player) fan second because I was a Jets fan before Revis came around, and I'll be a Jets fan long after Revis is gone, whether that's 2014 or 2024.

When you guys decide to trade Revis, please find a way to package Holmes into the deal. Tebro too.

    Thanks

If this was just about Revis value versus the cap and the Jets having cap issues for the next few years then the decision would be pretty easy: you find a way to get Revis to agree to a deal that the cap can handle and you keep him.

It's not just about Revis value against the cap right now. The Jets are a fraying team. The team aspect has been slowly coming undone since the month just before the lockout began. In that month the Jets released Damien Woody and Kris Jenkins. Santonio Holmes, Braylon Edwards, Shaun Ellis and Tony Richardson's contracts expired. The only guy in that group that got brought back as a free agent was Holmes.

In camp that summer the Jets wound up releasing Jerrico Cotchery at his own request. Between the February/March departures and Cotchery's exit a lot of veteran leadership went out of the locker room.

During 2011 a lot of the remaining veterans played under significant job stress. Nick Mangold had his first serious injury as a Jet missing several games with the high ankle sprain. Brandon Moore was recovering from off-season surgery and despite being selected to the pro bowl had an off-season with a void at RT next to him and Mangold missing for long periods of time to his left. The pro bowl selection was a sign of respect by his peers who saw him trying to do the best he could in a very bad situation. It was his first trip to the pro bowl in his 9 year career. LaDainian Tomlinson was having a rough season also and finally facing retirement and without his ring.

The Jets going into the 2011 season had less veteran leadership than the fairly tight 2009 and 2010 teams and it showed. The sniping in the locker room was present from early on with Jets WR's being quoted as saying that the offensive line was having issues and the game plan was weak. By the end of the season some were saying Sanchez was the problem. Nobody had a lid for the problem and by the end of the season Rex Ryan was forced to admit that he'd lost the locker room.

Why is this important in the decisions to be made about Revis?

Because Revis is a me-first player who puts that on display not by his words but by his actions. The rookie holdout was the first sign that this was the case. Revis was not yet part of the team though. Until he signed that contract he was just a draftee waiting on the outside for a deal that would get him in.

By the 2010 holdout it was obvious that Revis was going to take whatever actions were necessary to maximize his compensation and that the overall effect that had on the team was a secondary consideration. His holdout in 2010 was announced long before the fact. Revis didn't participate on the OTA's that spring, after a brief appearance at the first. His representatives waged a war in the media against the Jets in anticipation of the holdout.

When Revis finally did come back into the fold it was after camp had ended and he predictably blew out a hamstring shortly after returning and was not in playing condition until nearly mid-season thereafter.

Again this last off-season his representatives began the media escalation, trying to set up another renegotiation despite the fact that his contract didn't favor the move at all. Revis allowed just enough tension in the situation to get things heating up and then he came in and the issue was defused.

The Jets best player is not a veteran leader who understands what that means to the team. He's a perpetual free agent in his own mind who will grab any opportunity to try to squeeze a few more bucks out of the team, even though he is one of the highest paid players in the NFL at this point.

The other players know that Revis is in it for himself. You'd have to be an idiot at this point to be in that locker room and not get that Revis was going to make every decision based on his own good and not that of the team or his teammates.

That's one of the reason the Jets team fabric is so weak. It's not just that they've lost a lot of vets over the last few season without adequately replacing them. It's not just that they've signed players without regard for their character, going so far as to say that talent is more important than character. It's at least partly because the unquestioned best player in the locker room is in it for himself and makes no bones about that through his actions. Words are cheap, actions speak loudly.

I think to begin to fix the Jets you need to find a deal for Darrelle Revis and let him take his act somewhere else where it will be appreciated by everybody, hopefully in a strong locker room that doesn't have other issues going on.

I understand, and it's a fair point you make.

But Revis' ability to simply take a player out of a game can go a long way in determining the outcome of that game. He might not always make a single play that directly leads to a team victory but his consistency in shutting down top tier receivers is so important. Rex (assuming he is still here next year) plays a system that depends on his corners being able to play man to man with not always a ton of help over the top. Revis and Cro are perfect for it.

I agree that trading Revis would give this team draft picks to help rebuild and would also free up a lot of cap space but its a move that at the very least I wouldn't allow this regime to make. If we were going to trade Revis i'd bring in a new GM and HC first and let them decide if it's the right thing to do.

Yeah, it's definitely a move a new FO should make. i am terrified that this FO will sign Revis to a huge extension and then get the boot and the new FO will be crippled for several years trying to wind the mistake down.
