What's the limit for what a team should spend on 1 freaking defender that other teams can throw away from. Heck, don't even need dollar amount, put it in terms of percentage of salary cap Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
id give him what he wants him and cromartie locking down a teams top 2 recievers is critical to this teams success
Because Gronkowski and Hernandez just vanish against the Jets, not to mention any decent slot receiver or outlet back. Cornerbacks are on the back end of the defense. You cannot make them the keys. It just doesn't work. Rex blitzed like an insane man in 2009 and for one season the corners were a key. The Jets had like 4 of the top 10 corners in terms of effectiveness that year. Then he stopped blitzing because offenses were figuring out how to deal with that. The Jets have not really been a great defense since then. Very good at times but also torched for 45 points by the Pats at others. The only way to make Darrelle Revis a key is to force people to throw at him. He had the second most passes go his way of any CB in the NFL in 2009. That's what made him a key.
if we had a decent safety and lb core teams would be forced to throw to the outside more towards revis its the whole reason the pats went so TE heavy because the jets had figured out how to lockdown moss
No they wouldn't be forced to throw at Revis. The only way that you can force them to throw at Revis is to put so much pressure on the QB that he can't think straight. You do that and he'll wind up throwing at his #1 WR even when the guy is covered. That's what happened in 2009. The NFL is a QB-dominated competition. Not a WR-dominated competition. In order for CB's to be a key the NFL would have to be a WR-dominated competition. Because without that the offense just looks away from the covered guy and completes a pass to somebody else. That's what happened in the 2009 AFC Championship Game. If you had 4 of Darrelle Revis in the defensive backfield, well that's 56 million in cap space right there and the opponents would just run the ball against your scrub DL and LB's.
Trading Revis would be an admission that the Jets are in rebuild mode...just sayin'. He's the best player at his position, bar none.
I'm still against trading him. on the other hand, I would trade Cromartie. the way he has been playing we could get similar value for him that we would for Revis. Nobody is going to give us two firsts for Revis, maybe 1 first and a second. Cromartie could bring a first in easily, I can name a handful of teams that need a CB.
Trading Cro doesn't actually make any sense as you won't get near as much for him, and you'd still have to replace him. If all we could get for Revis was a single 1st or 2nd round pick, then the decision would become questionable as it would just be a question of cap space. If we can get 2 picks for him, flip 1 of those picks and replace him, that leaves us with 1 bonus pick, more cap room, and puts Cro as our #1 CB.
You'd still have the Revis issue and now you'd have a big hole at your #2 corner, which is where teams are going to target since they will avoid Revis. Basically, you'd be looking at having the #1 CB paired with someone ranked much lower, like 20th or lower. If you keep Cro and add someone close to him, while dealing Revis, you'd get cap room, an extra pick, and have perhaps 2 Top 10-15 CBs as your starters.
A well thought out rebuilding process probably trades both Revis and Cromartie. They're both prime-time players with huge salaries and cap numbers at positions that are among the last you need to fill on a good team. You cannot build around CB's. Nobody has done that in the salary cap era and prospered.
I was thinking about this actually - and maybe Mangold and Harris too. Again, not because I am in favor of blowing up the roster or picking up prospects in lieu of the vets Jets have, but because of the cap situation. (I have realized, with the exception of QB, almost no player is worth 10M of the salary.)
a number 1 corner has become less impactful with the depth of options offenses use now as they have 5 options on every play. Look at Nnamdi Asomugha he had maybe the best 3 year stretch ever by a corner (yes even better than Revis.) His team was absolutely hamstrung by paying for him, and opponents just ran or went to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th options. A great corner is amazing up until you have to pay him insane money and weaken the rest of your team.
What >? Are you serious ? NFL teams have more than 1 scoring option ? It can't be. I mean, it's a certifiable fact that a lock down corner will win you a SB!!!!! :breakdance::breakdance::breakdance::breakdance:
That still misses the issue. Your trading a Cornerback who plays well and is under contract with the Jets until after the 2014 season. He has no opt out and if we're intersted in keeping him we can franchise him after that point or at least put a tender on him so we get compensation if he signs elsewhere. In other words don't lose something for nothing. Revis on the other hand can opt out after 2013, and will unless he's extended this off season. Under the terms of his contract the jets can not franchise him, and can not put a tender on him. In other words he walks and the Jets get nothing in return. Now maybe if the Jets were going to be a contender instead of a pretender next year you keep him for that run. But from a business standpoint you trade him while you can get something for him, rather than get nothing for him.
