I would like to see Rex stay, I don't think this whole debacle is his fault. It lays on the idiot GM and the mistake that was made by trading up to draft Sanchez. If Rex goes, we need an offensive minded head coach. You win super bowls in this league with an offensive minded team, not defensive minded. You need a super star QB to win a super bowl in this age of the NFL, and we need to get an offensive coach who can draft the QB of the future for us, not a defensive minded coach making another moving up in the draft to make a mistake with our QB
I'd like to see Rex as the DC and Payton as HC. Give Sancho his one year due to the weak QB draft class and Sanchez's contract. If he doesn't show massive improvement, then he must go. Get faster on defense, get a dynamic RB, and get a playmaking receiver, and a little depth, and yes I know it's easier said than done.
We've all been spoiled by the 2 AFCCG appearances. Its not like that kind of season is guaranteed to you every time. And even when we did get there (not saying it won't this season yet) there were games where we got our asses handed to us in embarrassing fashion along the way. Its not like Thursday was anything new. I don't recall anybody wanting Rex gone when we lost in NE 2 years ago, and even if some people did say it, they look like fucking idiots now, don't they? I think the problem with Tanny is, he tried to squeeze just one more run out of what has turned out to be pretty much dead weight. And that was last season, BTW. Pouha, Scott, Moore, Pace, Thomas, Hunter, Slauson, Smith, Leonhard, etc. Some are gone now, but all fell off last season with no viable replacements, and most are still here despite the fact that they had no upside left and were guaranteed to deteriorate. Look at how bad things had to get to make Tanny finally let go of Hunter! And yes, we have some younger players waiting in the wings, but they are still another year from contributing in any meaningful way, if they ever pan out. (Davis, Ducasse, Bush, Ellis, Hill, etc) So why the gap? The great teams build through the draft. But for several years here, the draft was never treated as a priority, it was all about the free agents and trades. And that was a bill that has come due today, in the form of bloated contracts and over-the-hill guys who can't get the job done anymore, and wouldn't be anything more than backups by now on any other team. We finally take the draft seriously this past offseason, and stockpiled a few picks, even with the Tebow trade. Too late for this season, unfortunately. Tanny didn't just fuck up last week, its always been there. And the only way to dig our way out of this mess is to keep drafting good young talent and let the coaches do what they do best, coach them. Its not going to happen this year, but maybe by next season or a year later, if we keep getting younger and faster, this might finally start to look like a solid, well run franchise with a reputation for winning instead of a joke. Let Rex coach, let Tanny make the deals that have to be made, but for gods sake put a football man in charge between Tanny and Woody. Now that would work for me.
Ryan can coach. What he doesn't do well is evaluate talent. Problem is, neither does Tanny. I'd keep Rex and clean house in the FO, understanding, of course, that a new GM would probably want his own guy as coach.
Despite what's gone down I can't hate Rex. But Tanny is a fat bum. Having said that, get me Jon Gruden and Charlie Casserly. Rex has to go. He's a proven DC, but he's clearly in over his head as HC. Push ups for fumbling? A color-coded card for Sanchez? What is this, junior high? How about teaching proper technique and coaching up the mental aspects of the game?
Rex Ryan would have been a great head coach pre Bill Walsh. The NFL has become a quarterback dominated pass first league. We need a new QB, and a head coach with the offensive vision to put him in a position to be successful; and that's not Rex Ryan.
How about adding Jim Fassel to this list. He's proven he can coach in NY and get a team to the Superbowl.
I'm surprised that everyone picked Rex Ryan to keep as HC. I picked Chip Kelly since he has experience and could bring discipline to the team. I would like Rex to stay as DC since he can focus more on having a good defense for the Jets.
Rex can coach defense but the club needs a leader who understands the whole game. The NFL is an offensive league. Any coach who does not know that has not been paying attention or has misread the modern game. Good defense gives you opportunities to score but cannot be relied on to score on a regular basis. Rex needs a boss who knows the game better than him. Too bad he is a nice guy.
Harbaugh is the man responsible for their success (along with the GM), they were a joke under Singletary.
can we get harbaugh or his under contract? damm this sucks, rex is not the answer guys he just dont have it to be a HC. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
That would be great but Rex's ego wouldn't allow that to happen. His contract runs thru the end of the 2014 season so unless we see a repeat of this movie again next season, and nothing so far says otherwise, Rex will finish his contract. I highly doubt, barring some unforseen event, that Rex will be offered another contract. Same for Tannenbaum. Woody may be a lot of undesireable things to us, but the man has PSL's, Swag and advertising time to sell and he's well aware of what really bad PR can do. Ever wonder why Braylon and Burris walked the plank w/o so much as a passing thought about being brought back in? Look no further than the bad press both players managed to compile while they were here. Holmes is only here because of the stupid contract Tannenbaum gave him.
wow Rex is winning this poll in a landslide surprising, I voted for Rex but based on what everyones been saying I didn't expect it
The only way Rex goes is if they somehow figure a way to bring in Payton, and don't keep Rex. I know it's a pipe dream and probably won't happen, but imagine Payton as head coach and Rex as DC? If anybody can help Sanchez take that next step, it's Payton. That might be the only person I'd be okay with replacing Rex, but I still think Rex is our man. I'd even take Payton as just OC, but I doubt he'd do that. He knows how to develop a QB.
I pretty much agree with this. I don't think that this debacle is Rex Ryan's fault, and I don't think that he deserves to be fired. But the front office needs to be completely turned over, and it's hard to imagine that any top GM will come in without bringing his own coach in with him. I think that Rex is going to have a lot more success as a head coach in this league -- but it seems rather inevitable that it's going to happen somewhere else.
Actually he's not. The poll is essentially do you want rex or someone else and someone else is winning
I wish there was a poll like this started before the season. It's interesting to see Rex's approval rating down to about half of fanbase support. Sanchez is even worse with only about 25% fanbase support from the other thread. Anyone want to take a guess as to what Mike T's approval rating is?
I am impressed to see that Rex Ryan has such strong support still. Maybe we should reset the numbers in about 5 weeks. Just before he gets fired, and redo the poll. I am probably going to be like some of those Obama haters who went berserk when Romney lost. I need for Ryan to go, so that I can take my team back. FTR, I voted for Payton
