First, I always state "you can't fill all needs in the draft", it's impossible. I make my selections based on who could(will) be the BPA and with a common sense approach on need. A few conditions: The Jets should win more than they lose from this point, missing the playoffs with a 7-9 or 8-8 record, which I predicted with my first mock. Jet's end the Tebow experiment and sign a Vet back-up QB to push Sanchez next year. Bryan Thomas, Brandon Moore & Bart Scott are the 3 starters not returning. Rex finally understands we need more offensive talent and it's the focal point of this draft. Addressing the O-Line is going to be a priority. ROUND 1 - CHANCE WARMACK, OG, BAMA - drafting in the early teens Warmack is a terrific value. I know some may not like this pick, it's not flashy, but IMO, Warmack is better than DeCastro from last year and one of the very best guards to come out in recent memory. An outstanding player making way for the run game and instant starter. As much as I love Jones and Te'o, they will be long gone. I had to find the next BPA that would help this team's offensive funk. ROUND 2 - CHASE THOMAS, OLB, STANFORD - great coverage player that also makes some plays in the backfield. Not an overwhelming pass rusher, but makes plays with sheer effort, will be the hardest working player on this team. A player that will be in demand on any defense...4-3 or 3-4. ROUND 3 - JOHNATHAN FRANKLIN, RB, UCLA - may be it's wishful thinking, but Franklin could fall to early part of Rd 3. Very productive runner that has a medium build (5'10"). Not a flashy back, runs with excellent vision and makes good cuts. ROUND 4 - ERIC FISHER, OT, CENTRAL MICHIGAN - one of the best players in the MAC. A few have Fisher rated higher, but being from a smaller school, drops his stock. Also, there is a a lot of good second tier talent at many positions Rd 2 - Rd 4 will be loaded that push players down, it always happens. Could challenge for RT from the start. ROUND 5 - JARED ABBREDERIS, WR, WISCONSIN - I really like this player, since I see a lot of Big Ten games. Makes plays, great hands good size 6'2", could add some LBs. Just a hard working, no nonsense player that will contribute. Also returns punts, but probably won't be a punt returner in the NFL. Could be a solid 2/3 receiver. Has a good YAC average. ROUND 6 - WES HORTON, DE/OLB, USC - Overall a disappointing career at USC, some injuries, a lot more was expected. 6'5' around 255 that could play DE in a 4-3, but has some potential coverage skills, a big body that could develop into a big 3-4 OLB. ROUND 7 - PHILLIP LUTZENKIRCHEN, TE, AUBURN- A steal in Rd 7. Injury put him out for the rest of the year, could have been a Rd 3 prospect. Good receiver that has blocking skills. Comments or Questions welcome!!!!
I would love a draft like this for the jets. Warmqck and Thomas are two of my favorite prospects and unlike the potential filled class of the last few drafts the should be able to step in right away. It's not flashy, but would help fix a lot of problems.
If Brandon Moore doesn't return and the Jets draft Chance Warmack, who do you think fills the other G position? Ducasse? Slauson? A FA?
Long term Ducasse, he's a much better run blocker than Slauson. Ducasse's game has improved, he's not a finished pass protector, hopefully he improves in that area.
I like it, Its a solid mock for sure. Warmack would be great if we are in the low teens. He would help sure up the interior of the line (I think Ducasse is capable of taking over LG next year). Chase Thomas is a very good player. He doesnt solve our passrushing problems, but he can hold his own to be capable. High motor/effort player that I would not be disappointed if we brought him in. Jonathan Franklin is a good runner, and like that pick. Love the Lutzenkirchen pick in the 7th. He could be a great #2 TE for us and maybe eventually take over if Dustin leaves. Overall I would describe it as solid. Not flashy but could fill some holes especially if Franklin could turn out to be a #1 RB.
I usually don't advocate for picking on need, but the Jets need a RB. Gio Bernard would be a perfect fit. I would take him in the first round if I was the Jets.
Warmack or Matthews would be ideal for the first round, especially if we can't get Te'o or Jones. love the Chase Thomas pick, I hope we get him as well. Lutz in the 7th would be a steal, I like it.
I really like Gio, but his value in the first half of Rd 1 is very questionable, plus I've never liked the idea of drafting a RB in Rd 1. To improve our offense it starts up front on the line and Warmack has pro-bowl potential, he's that good. Don't sell Jon Franklin short, he's a very good runner.
As much as I love Gio, he's not worth a top 16 pick really... RBs that high have to be elite talent- like Trent, AP, CJ Spiller... Gio's a great RB but he's not in that tier. IMO, he's right around Doug Martin. I thought he was going to be a high 2nd round pick, mostly due to the lack of need around the league at the RB position. I see Gio around the same range. He could easily sneak into round 1 like Doug Martin did. I just dont think his value is there where we'll be drafting. I'll be praying he slips into round 2 like I was with Doug, but my hopes will probably be crushed... If Bernard isnt there, give me Jawan Jamison.
I think it's 50/50 he could be back, I'm not holding my breath. Thomas and Scott are goners for sure.
If Gio is available in Rd 2 I'd be shocked. I think he's going to be drafted in the late teens to mid 20s.
I like it a lot. Idea of a suddenly vulnerable Austin Howard and a rookie, albeit a good one starting next to each other on the right side is scary.
And that is right around where I think we will pick. That is why I think Gio is a perfect pick. Sure, if we win only another game or two and draft near the top ten, there are probably better options, but just look at our schedule. Its way too easy to not be picking at least in the late teens.
Yeah his stock is definitely just going to go up. When its all said and done, he will probably be a 1st round pick in the 20-32 range.
To pick in the late teens or early 20s(playoffs) the Jets probably have to win out or at least 5 of 6, it's not happening.
Another possible target for the Jets. I like Franklin better, but would have no issue drafting Ellington.
Theres a lot of solid RB's this year... No one thats really elite like Trent or AP, but a lot of options in the late 1st to 3rd round that we could draft to fill a huge need. Gio, Jawan Jamison, Joseph Randle, Stepfan Taylor, Leveon Bell, Mike Gillislee, Ellington, Lacy, Jon Franklin, Kenjon Barner... A lot of names. To say the least, we better address the RB position this year.
