Holy crap - Mehta put out a good article. I'm kinda pissed cause I started writing my own and it was more detailed than this but he definitely stole my thunder. Manish said everything he was supposed to say and hit every point I have been arguing for all season. Excellent article!! I find it hilarious how people are looking for Rex's head to role when his first 3 seasons as a head coach we were one game away from the superbowl twice and have never had a losing record. People on here act like we were this powerhouse of a team that now is in shambles. It's time to wake the fuck up and realize that we went from being completely irrelevant to the front page, whether it be for good reasons or bad. We have been a team that now runs with the best when operating on all cylinders. I, personally, love Rex. I have loved him since 09, his first year. The guy just brings out the best in most players and is a defensive genius. This is his first go around with this job. I have a gut feeling in a few years, this will be the head coach everyone wants. He'll figure it out and when he does, the "White House" WILL be our destination
That "defensive genius" moniker is wearing a little thin when we give up 20-30 points every week with the money and emphasis Rex has given to it. It's easy to be a good coach when your team is winning, it's a lot harder to do it when they are losing. We'll see how he does the remainder of the year.
If Manish knew his ass from his elbow he would be a HC & making millions a year in salary but alas he is just a reporter making 30/40K maybe & since he is not inside means he is outside which means he is not privy to any info except what the NYJs want to release to him:sad:
Again, this can be attributed to losing Revis and Tanny's lack of talent evaluation. Hard to put a stout defense on the field when he's given what he's given. Now, no one knows what goes on behind the curtain, so from both sides, it's all speculation.
I disagree with Manish completely. Rex is a major part of the problem. This team doesn't look great one week and like dogshit another because of the personnel, it all stems from the HC who is too high when things are well and too low when things are bad. -- leading to inconsistency. He also is way too buddy buddy with the players even to the point where he refuses to hold some of them accountable. The Jets need a coach who is on a even keel and these players could use a coach that is a Head Coach and not a friend so he can make the tough decisions when necessary. Also, its misguided to think that Rex hasn't had say in the building of the roster and to blame it all on Tannenbaum. Why do you think they've been drafting defense heavily in the early rounds in the Ryan era? Tannenbaum had a change in philosophy??? NO - Rex's input. Rex's philosophies on offense are outdated and not suited for today's NFL. If anything I want LESS input from him on the roster.
Revis played last year, we had 8 games giving up 24-45 points... I'll give ya Rex is clueless on offense, but he has his hands all over the defense and who gets signed, he doesn't get a pass on that.
You make some good points here. I have not given up on Ryan, yet, but I am certainly not as high on him as I was. For one thing I would love to know how much he was really behind the Tebow trade. I have been of a mind that it was really Woody's call, perhaps one Sparano was in on since he felt he could use a wildcat approach like he (over) used in Miami. But if Ryan was all in on that move, and we all understood that to be the case, that would take away a lot of the reasoning that has led me to still support him. But on the points you make, I think they have merit. I am not quite where you are on the inconsistency thing since I think some of that is how the team performs based on matchups. And also how well the opponent plays. This year I think it has been striking how in a couple of games particularly the Indy and even the Rams game that we seem to have caught the opponent in a sort of down game for them. So what is seen as inconsistency may merely be about matchups and the effort by the opponent. Still, we all know inconsistency is a problem with the Jets despite what I just said. They say so themselves. And yes, the responsibiltiy for that is primarily on the CS, and that means the HC in particular. I also agree that Rex is too old school when it comes to his stated offensive philosophy, but I give him a bit of a pass there since I think what he says really reflects the limitations of the roster he has to deal with. Put it this way - there's little reason for him to say he'd like to have a more NE type offense as long as Mark Sanchez is his starting Qb. But... I am less and less a Ryan fan as his tenure goes on.
I didn't want to start a new thread, but I think it's interesting that Rex hasn't called out the fans for tomorrow's game. Hasn't he done so every year for a huge home like this?
Ah & remember he is the person totally responsable for MS Lets have a look @ some of a recent draft picks Kyle Wilson so far not productive Vlad also so far not productive Coples to early to tell but so far not setting the league on fire Hill stone hands
13 years huh? IF the Jets had a tradition of success more like the Steelers than the Chicago Cubs, I'd might have a bit more empathy for this point. Since we don't have that tradition nor any executive talent inhouse coupled with Rex not exactly getting the hang of being coach of the entire team instead of only one facet of it, what do we expect to happen at some point over the next 13 years? That would put us somewhere around 57years since our last SB appearance. That my friends is Detroit Lions territory although they have 4 championships to our 1. Their last championship was in 1957 so that's what? 65years? Add 13 on that and you get 78 years for the Lions of Detroit. That's also retirement age for most people and more than a lifetime for quite a few. The same can be said of the Jets. 44 years and counting and we're already suggesting we take the Steelers route and wait perhaps another 13 years with the same personnel in place doing the same thing expecting a different result for the sake of continuity. Reads more like insanity to me but hey, I've only been a fan since 1965 so I guess I'm the fool for expecting something a bit more immediate. For all you "new" fans, those would be the Woody Johnson/Rex Ryan era fans, 13 years isn't very much. Just imagine though if by 2025, the Jets are exactly where they are today for the sake of "continuity". Guess what?, you ain't getting those 13 years back and you can almost bet that the Giants won't take that long to retool and win so if you can live with the eternal hope that some magical lightbulb will come on in Rexy's head and our offense will resemble something a bit more modern and complex, more power to you. Personally, I'm more of a fan of a getting off the crazy train and getting the franchise in the right direction just one time.
Coples will end up being a decent player, He isn't gonna be a Justin Tuck or a JPP but he will be alright in the long run
We just need a real offensive coordinator on this team, someone with a real background and someone who has had alot of success. Tom Moore would of been the kind of signing we needed but we go with Sparano. I would love to see who hires Sparano when we fire him next year. But we need a change at OC again next year for sure even if we went on a huge run like we all want us to , Sparano isn't the answer he is only the question
So Manish literally shits all over the team a couple weeks back and now he kisses Rex's ass to try and make it better. He can still go bone himself. He's right about Rex though. Anybody thinking Rex is the problem hasn't watched the team for all that long and seen the success of other coaches we've had. Our defense is locked for years to go right now and we're one good OLB away from a dominant defense again (with Revis & Landry back of course and more experience for Wilks, Ellis and Copes). We have to rebuild a little bit each year but we're almost there.
Rex has brought us way closer than Mangini, Herm, Al Groh, Rich Kotite, Bruce Coslet and Pete Carroll. He has also brought us to more AFCCG's than Parcells. Rex has been one of the best Jets HC of all time (up there with Weeb & Parcells) so don't forget that.
...and Rex has done it all as a Rookie HC with Tanny as the GM wanna-be and Shotty/Sparano as the OC. That alone should put Rex in Canton.
All that means is we've had lousy coaches other than Weeb and Parcells. If we're using two AFCCG losses, and poorly played AFCCG's at that followed by two consecutive bad years and at least one collapse in the lockerroom as our base formula for success, we shouldn't be surprised that we keep on losing the big games assuming we even get there by some miracle. Herm did get us to one AFCCG but he bitched up when it was time to win it as he played for the tie instead of the win. Ryan's team didn't even show up in the first half of the 2011 AFCCG and tried to play 30mins and steal a win which didn't happen. Now if that gives you the warm and fuzzies, all well and good. It just shows how badly this fanbase needs to see what sustained success looks like. We ain't the Steelers. We still have to develop a winning infrastructure. So far, its still a work in progress bigtime. Rex is Rex and if in your opinion, two AFCCG losses is enough to buy him 13 more years, then Woody Johnson has nothing to worry about as the money tree will always be there for the shaking.
Right but what is the major difference between the AFCCG teams and this one? The offense has always been underwhelming. It is the defensive side of the ball that has slipped. It amazes me how so many people want to give Rex a pass when the D has done nothing but decline since he came here. That is insane to me.
