Everyone keeps saying so but going by http://www.nyjetscap.com/salary13.html numbers: As of now we have 142 mill dollars in contracts for 2013. However: 1) Take Jason Smith's 12 mill dollars out of the equation straight away (with no dead money). 2) Cut Bart Scott -> 7 mill of the books 3) Cut Calvin Pace -> 8.5 mill off the books 4) Cut Eric "fucking" Smith -> 3 mill off the books (unlikely, but I'm sure they'll restructure his contract) Considering some other minor savings (1.5 mill) we're down to 110 million... is that such a terrible spot to be in? Not even considering some contracts can be restructured... I think, as usual, there's too much panic going on, but in the end we'll be fine. No big splash in FA sure, but we'll be able to re-sign our own guys (Landry, Keller, Greene) and focus on the draft.
The Jets have like 36 players under contract next year for that $110 million. That's cap hell. Because of the way Darrelle Revis contract was structured his cap hit for next year is already only $9 million. There's no room to cut cap space there even if the Jets could sign him to a big extension. The year is almost perfectly structured to go get a new GM and rebuild for the season. It's not like the Jets could go all-in anyway and they need fresh eyes looking at things like a $10.7 million cap hit for D'Brick and a $13 million cap hit for Harris. They need fresh eyes figuring out how much money is reasonable to keep an all-time great CB. Letting the old regime make decisions on things like this will cripple the new one if they don't arrive until 2014 or 2015.
this is the absolute truth. while tanny will be able to make it work like he always does that doesnt mean that he will be improving the team and moving forward getting stronger. he did it with alot of smoke and mirrors for a few years but he is out of smoke at this point.
Bingo. It all comes down to this, Tanny has to go. It still baffles me how Davis Harris is getting paid what he is... He is going to be making what Patrick Willis, Navarro Bowman and Justin Smith are getting paid COMBINED in 2013. Thats just fucking insane. Watching the 49ers game last night makes you realize how average Davis Harris is; he couldnt make half of the plays those two studs in the middle do. Yet another Tanny fuck up. Everybody says he's a numbers guy and capologist and what not, but he even sucks at that. The contracts he gives out (Sanchez, Harris, Holmes, Pace, Scott, Hunter, ect) are beyond idiotic and just crippling in future years. Then to add onto those idiotic contracts, he guarantees more money for them to make room for other shitty contracts... Yay.
This question comes up every year, and every year fans think we will be, and every year the fans are wrong. It's actually funny that as fans we think we understand how to work a salary cap just by looking at how much free space we have. The fact is Tanny is a cap genius, and every year he finds a way to work around the cap. I forget which article it was but he said with every contract he crrates he's always thinking 3+ years down the line. We'll be fine.
really? cause we werent fine last year and we arent fine this year. we have no depth and are stuck overpaying horrible, old, linebackers. working around the cap to maintain the same team, with no depth and agining overpaid players isnt a good thing. all we hear in every thread is how our linebackers cant hack it, we have no pass rush, and sanchez has no talent around him. why do you think that is? because of our cap situation. Sanchez, Scott, Pace, Harris. those guys all make well over 10 million per year, and not one of them is top 20 at their position
And every year in the 4 years, this roster has become less and less talented. Of course we'll be fine!!! The question is not whether or not Tanny can get us under the cap, because everyone knows he can do that simply by working his magic (which is guaranteeing some aging Vets contract that will screw us over in the future), the question is, can Tanny improve this team and the talent, while staying under the cap. Personally, I dont think he can do that. So yes, we as fans have the right to ask this question.
So I am curious. The GM God that Bill Polian is will magically come here to Jetsland and cut everyone, fix our salary cap, and then be able to draft a top notch QB, skilled impact replacement players, make a few changes in FA and Bill Cowher will get this team to a SB? Just want to make sure I am on the same page as you guys. Yeah well as many mistakes as Tanny has made, I think I still have more faith in him than anyone on this board.
The cap will be fine unless Tanny splurges on another big ticket acquisition then they are screwed. They just need an infusion of younger and cheaper talent. They won't be paid alot initially so Tanny needs a good draft. Of the 17 spots that need to be filled only Keller and Landry would be worth spending some longer term cash on. Greene and Bell can come back without much larger commitments on cash or term then they are now. Even a reduction in Bell's case. That brings you to 13 spots. That brings you to restructures. 1. Pouha can be cut to save 3.8MIL or his hit lowered if he returns. They have some depth at D line. 2. Mangold's play is at a high enough level that you can guarantee him some future cash in return for saving a 1-3 MIL vs. the cap next year. 3. Outright cutting Holmes saves 1.25MIL vs. the cap. Demand that he restructures to save more vs. the cap to push the poision pill dead money back a year at no additional cost to the team. 4. A new Revis deal can be structured to lower his first year hit below the 9MIL he is supposed to count against the cap next year. They will be fine.
Bitching about Harris contract shows ur intelligence level. Comparing it to Willis' contract n claiming Harris makes more is even foolish. Harris signed a 4 yr 36 mil contract. Willis signed a 5 yr $50 mil contract. Who makes more now?? Don't just look at His salary from one particular yr.
I didn't think it was going to be bad after we lose Scott, Pace, Smith and Moore. We also have some money carried over from this season.
we barely have any cap room and need to replace 3 linebackers, starting rb, two safeties, and one guard assumeing vlad will take over one of the spots left by slauson and moore.
http://www.ninersnation.com/2011/9/10/2411639/nfl-salary-cap-contract-patrick-willis This here says 6 years, 50 million, which is 8.3 mil a year when Harris is averaging 9 mil a year. Point was that Harris is getting paid Patrick Willis money. You must really like defending Tanny, huh? Harris is an average player getting paid elite money at the LB position. The way I see it is another player overpaid buy Tanny. You want to spin this into something that's pro Tanny?
