Moreover, let's look at Phillip Rivers, a QB that was once heralded as on the fringe of elite, who, since losing Vincent Jackson (a bonafide #1 target) has quickly turned into a below average QB. There is a correlation here.
Guys, Mark has a half way decent game against a team worst then then the Jets does not change the fact that his flaws are fundamental and have not improved in four years. People need to stop looking for scape goats for things that rest squarely in Mark' s lap
Most players who are on the cusp of the elite decline from there as age and circumstances catch up to them. It is highly unusual to be an elite player and to be able to maintain that level of play over any period of time. That's because the NFL is a very highly balanced competition in which good players are constantly coming into the league while other lesser players leave. It may not be intuitive to think about this but the NFL becomes .01% harder (yeah I am making up a small but countable increment which is probably in the ball park) to play in with each game played. The players become bigger, faster, stronger and smarter about how to play the game of NFL football every day. The league is particularly good at getting rid of players who cannot keep up with that .01% progression, which further accentuates the curve upwards in play. So that Philip Rivers has declined from his former lofty standing is not surprising at all. What is surprising is that Tom Brady has not.
Nice game by Mark. He's been to 2 AFCCG in the past 3 seasons. That isn't being put in the position to fail, more like being put in the position to succeed.
Rivers has produced without Jackson in the past. There was one season where Jackson missed quite a few games with a contract dispute & didn't look so good when he finally came back to the team. Rivers struggling this season does not mean he's never shown the ability to succeed without Vincent Jackson.
If Sanchez could play like he did today in most of his games, he'd be near the top 10. He just needs to fix that consistency. It's always been his biggest issue. He'll have amazing games, and then have atrocious ones. Claiming he's done nothing at all to improve over his 4 years in the NFL is silly and we know without a doubt that he isn't the only problem on the team right now.
And now sporano is making things worse. Henne was put in the same position sanchez is in right now.. And now henne is gonna kill it. His stats this week are stats sanchez can even wish for. We should have signed a play calling hungry OC.. Not a former HC that still thinks he has David Lee and Henning to call his plays.
Hopefully Mark has it going on now as we move into November. Time to beat the pats and grind our way back to the playoffs. Good job by Sanchez & Co. getting us back on the winning track !! Time to beat the Pats on Turkey Day and take it from there.
I think Rivers is a really good QB still. He has played horribly as of late, but I think it is his offensive line that has affected his play rather than the loss of Jackson. We complain about how bad our line is, by look at San Diego's. They have to be one of the worst lines, if not the worst line in the league. They cannot run block or pass protectant at all.
True, but he also had an Antonio Gates that wasn't old and injured as well as a GREAT pass-catching emergency target in Ladanian Tomlinson if I recall.
Homerism aside, there's not many I would take, given the situation were in talent wise. I wouldn't take any of those QBs you listed (as you wouldn't either) I would take Andrew Luck out of any of the QBs first. Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Drew Brees, RG3. It's a small list. Only the QBs I think listed can make those around them better. Sanchez isn't very good, but the majority of QBs in the NFL would easily struggle just as bad if not worse than Mark. Look at Rivers for an example. How good would he look throwing to our WRs and having the offensive coaches we have? He's lucky he's got Gates and Norv Turner calling offensive plays (Norv is a good OC). I want him to be our next offensive coordinator.
Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, No, Yes, Yes, Yes. i would take any of those guys, with exception of Vick, over Sanchez. wouldn't have to think twice.
I guess I'll repeat this in this thread also. First two years, we put him in a position to succeed and surrounded him with talent. We still mismanaged him, but we surrpunded him with talent and surprise surprise, we were good or at least better than now. Then from year 2-3 offseaosn, we undercut the talent around him. Why, no idea. He didn't show signs of jumping to a Rodgers, Brees, Brady talent level in year 3 and expecting him to play at that level at year 3 is shocking. Yet we cut the talent around him for some unknown reason and we paid the price. We tried to retroactively fix this but the injury bug caught up to this and now we are paying the price. We pulled the rug for under Sanchez really quickly for unknown reasons
Different primary wide receivers year in and year out, mediocre talent surrounding him. While I still don't think he'll ever be elite, we have certainly done nothing to help him get to an 'elite' status.
 Don't know why but I lol'd... I think it's cause you went with syphilis when there were so many other choices...
Really? Where did you read that from? I would take Norv (as an OC) and Rivers here, bring back Jerricho Cotchery and we'll have a reunion :breakdance:
How is that surprising? He almost always had a very good protection that gave him clean pocket. When was he harried out of the pocket? I can say this with confidence: Sanchez has longer history of running for his dear life than Tom Brady ever has. Also... Brady never had the cannon of an arm (that Manning brothers were blessed with.) But if you give any QB decent time, he will see enough open chances. So, what kind of weapon do you give Brady? First and foremost, he was given Wes Welker - the kind of WR that could bail Brady out in most difficult situations. He was then given Randy Moss at one time, and most recently, he was given two TEs that present match-up problems for the opposing DCs. Compare that to Sanchez. His top target was gone by 3rd season. So was his security blanket at WR. (Braylon Edwards/Jerricho Cotchery). He had a functional running game when he arrived, but then the OL got older without any suitable replacements waiting in the wing. Same with RBs. It should be clear by now that Patriots have done everything they could to make sure Brady could succeed - Jets, not so much. All right. Jets point may be a digressing, but that aside, Patriots trying everything they can to give Brady every chance they can to succeed still holds.
