How could Hill only have 4 drops? I guess they're blaming a lot of it on Sanchez. Again it's subjective, but I wasn't trying to compare their production. I just think Cruz is a good receiver and if Hill can become a similar guy, he could one day help us get to the promised land. I see Cruz as Hill's ceiling almost. I wasn't trying to say they are similar, I'm just hoping he develops in a similar way minus the injury of course. I agree that drops are going to happen as a rookie, and that's why I'm giving him a pass for now. We just need him to produce pretty badly this year if we are to actually make the post season, but I think he's about a year away from being a reliable WR. Imagine Cruz and Holmes on the field at the same time and the wonders they would do for each other. I see Hill as that guy eventually, at least I hope so.
Haha, that's mostly ChampionJets69. He's down on every single player on the team. Stephen Hill is 0-1 at bringing us the VLT!
Well us fans do not count at all. He also lost the NE game with that drop. MS career is also on the line so if U would MS would you go with the dependable over the undependable?
oh okay seems like CJ69 is just a crankpot who likes to complain about our players. I see Hill as becoming an VERY VERY Good WR for years to come. He will clean up the drops like many other Rookie WRs have done before him. CJ69 is just being too negative. Since 1982 CJ69 is 0-30 in bringing us the VLT
I suspect it's because fan's have a different set of criteria as to what qualifies as a drop. some fans will insist that a receiver should make even the most difficult catch if they get a hand on it and if they don't catch it they consider it a drop. On the other extreme are people who say it's only a drop if it hits the reciever dead on. The reality is somewhere in between those two extremes, though one that hits a receiver dead on the chest should always be a drop by anyones count, unless of course as soon as the ball gets there they get leveled by a defender, but that's a bird of another color. The important thing is not exactly what qualifies as a drop, but that the exact same criteria is applied to every player in order to get a valid reference point and the data extrapolated from there. I do not know exactly what criteria ESPN or Stats Inc uses. But, I can say that a lot of what fans call drops are actually shared responsiblity incompletions. There are the obvious examples of a ball hitting a receiver dead on the chest on one extreme or a ball falling 10 yards short of a receiver where the fault is pretty obvious as to who the responsibility lies with. But even then the type of ball thrown can have an impact, the more wobble on a pass the more difficult it is to catch. On a routine breadbasket catch woble shouldn't matter much. But if the ball is behind a receiver, or low, or high, or too far ahead of the receiver wobble makes a big difference, especially on finger tip catches. But I digress. As a general rule the higher the difficulty factor of the catch the more the blame is shared between the two. But at what point they factor it I don't know, what does matter is that if you use the same criteria and apply it to all recievers and pass plays then the results should be uniform and you can extrapolate from there how reliable a reciever is...usually. But there are always some receivers who make the most difficult passes look routine but drop the easy ones. In those cases it's definitely a matter of concentration and or taking their eyes off the ball before they catch it.
It's true that Sanchez's career is on the line, but it's on the line because of much bigger issues than Hill. But to say that Hill lost us that game would be a poor statement. He did drop a certain first down pass, but that wasn't the last opportunity the Jets had to put the game away. That play would have given the jets inside the 20. But let us not forget that down by 10 the Jets drove 92 yards for a TD, on that drive Hill had catches of 21, 7, and 24 yards. Without that drive and the 24 yard catch on 3rd down the Jets aren't even in the game. Yes that play hurt, but don't forget that right after that field goal the Jets got the ball right back on a fumble on the kickoff. which gave the Jets the ball on the Patriots 18 yard line. But the coaching staff got conservative, Tebow run for 2 yards, 1 yard Mcknight run, and a Sanchez Sack. to say that Hill lost the game for the Jets is just silly. you have the ball on the Patriots 18 yard line and go ultra conservative on play calling. But the Jets still had the lead, but the Jets played a conservative prevent defense that let Brady take short passes to get in field goal range and tie the game. And of course the Sanchez fumble in overtime. But the game never should have been in overtime, it should have ended after the Jets got the ball on the 18 yard line, a pass to Keller, Chaz, or anyone to get one first down, or a touchdown, and the Jets win. But the coaching staff got conservative and it cost them. In reality it wasn't the dropped pass by Hill that was the problem, the Jets did have the lead. No, the problem was with the game plan in the closing minutes of the quarter. Bad decisions and playing not to lose.
well hopefully we can clean up the mistakes and beat the pats on Thursday !! No sense focusing on the negatives.
Since the first game of the year, Hill has less catches then most the other WR/TE positions. Pretty sad. Kerley 34 catches, 533 yds Keller 21 catches, 236 yds Holmes 16 catches, 204 yds Schilens 19 catches, 190 yds Gates 11 catches, 139 yds Cumberland 12 catches, 117 yds Hill 9 catches, 107 yds Reuland 8 catches, 61 yds
Hill's drops are troublesome, but there's no reason to give up on him after ten games. Give him the 2012 off-season and see what he does in 2013. If this carries over into 2013 then by 2014 he'll either be elsewhere or the fourth/fifth string receiver on the roster. This is why you can't rely on rookies. Thankfully Chaz Schilens is (hopefully) coming around.
Once upon a time ago, Demayrius Thomas had the drop problems in Denver during his rookie year, when he was healthy. Stephen Hill can follow this route. If he dosn't, he will be the next Troy Williamson, if it comes to that, at least he wasn't a top 10 pick.
What makes you so sure he will become a very good receiver? He cant catch a ball to save his life, he isnt good at beating bump and run coverage (see Steelers game), his hand eye coordination is dreadful, he is clueless in running routes. It wasn't like this guy was a stud in college and he is just going through a rough time. He was never a great receiver in college. This guy was a total reach and even though its early, he could very well be another Tannembum bust. Also, people try to say other receivers dropped a lot of balls their rookie years too but the % of drops this guy has is downright alarming. Us Jet fans can probably count 7-9 drops so far from him and thats in very limited passes too. Another good read on Hill here. Here is an alarming Hill stat, since week 1, he has as many drops (9) as catches! http://www.ganggreennation.com/2012/11/19/3667080/down-hill
Thats pathetic that Hill has only 9 catches the entire year,9 catches and 4 drops, Flat Out Stud numbers
how the hell can you look at stephen hill and not be at least a little bit hopeful hell turn into a good receiver for the jets? his problems are mental not physical. and a case of the drops is no cause to declare a player a bust in his rookie season. if he werent seeing the field, not getting open, dropping his few opportunities, then yeh id probably be with you saying the kid sucks, but thats not the case. he is starting. he is getting open. he is making plays when he has the ball. he is dropping a lot of balls, but thats a mental error that can easily be corrected by next season. it seems pointless to even mention one of the numerous receivers who had this same problem their rookie season yet turned into great players. its just one of those rookie things. it would be great to be able to draft nfl ready players, but the majority of players take time to learn the nfl, cause playing in the nfl is hard.
I have a good feeling about Hill on Thursday. He was getting open in the 1st Pats game and caught 4 balls for 55 yards. He was wide open for what would have been a 40 yard TD but Sanchez shit the bed, and of course he was also wide open on that killer drop. Poor execution on those two plays, but the opportunities were certainly there. I think he'll have a good game against that NE pass defense.
Actually recheck your stats, those are not correct, it's 14 catches, 37 targets 4 drops. still not great, but it's best to use full numbers when saying full season.
If he does not drop that pass we could have run out of the clock & last I know when the clock reads 00.00 & U have more points then the other guy U win & when he dropped that pass we were ahead
We were down 3 when he dropped the pass. We settled for a FG and kicked off at 2:06 with the game tied at 23 ... and recovered the fumble at 2:01
