Many think Tanny is a cap guy. If you go on that premise, the head coach is making the choice on players. Compare the player acquisition of the coaches under Tanny as a GM.
There is a common theme, we trade draft picks like crazy. Is that the coaches, or Tanny's doing? I would think our scouting dept. has more say than the coach and in the end Tanny has the final word unless it comes from Woody
Scouting dept. is responsible for finding players to fit in the coach's scheme. The QBs have been Woody's say.
sanchez isnt the main problem, but he is in no form a saint either. aaron rodgers has the second worst oline in football and makes plays without greg jennings. ryan tannehill looks more competent with less. sometimes the "he has no talent" excuse isnt a justifiable excuse for him being so bad. people are doing more with less
Dude, we won a football game today against a very bad team. Our longest drive was 63 yards, our next longest was less than 38. Total offense for the day was 289 yards. Putting that in perspective, coming into this game, we were ranked 30th in the NFL for total offense with an average of 301.3 yards.
I can agree that the team hasn’t executed for shit , but Sanchez Has made Critical mistakes that have cost us scoring opportunities and games. As of right Now Its the quarter back position that is holding us back. In close conference game ;which we needed as it turns out Sanchez failed to capitalize on drives the defense provided for him and we'll the out come is 4-6.
If you have a problem with today, then you have a problem with Rex's philosophy to win games. Who cares about yards, no one has one a game because they had more yards than the other team.
I had the same question and another poster found the stats for me. The gist of it, at that point around a month ago or so, was that Sanchez was suffering no more or less drops than any other QB in the league. This is statistically speaking mind you. You might be able to delve into the stats and make a different case, but until someone does that I find it difficult to use this excuse now.
I have all sorts of problems with the game today, but mostly it has to do with really poor blocking and some suspect play calling. Am rewatching the game again in slo mo just to see how bad those things were. Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy for the win. In my view, an "ugly win" is worth the same amount of points as a great win. That said, I'm tempering my optimism as the offense did okay, enough to win, against a bad team. BTW, I don't care about yards gained per se, but it's more about how indicative that stat is about our ability to move the ball effectively.
Why does having say make Tanny a yes man? This is a misguided and unwarranted perception. If I may use an historical example, Washington was famous for allowing his subordinates to make a case before him and accepting a breadth of counsel to make decisions, but in the end, once he decided, the decision was his. I mention this because I don't see any reason why Tanny--or ANY GM--wouldn't work closely with their HC in selecting talent. Ultimately the final say should land on the GM, but a HC having say/input hardly would make the person above him a 'yes' man? OTOH, if Tanny is just a glorified accountant who needs other people to find talent for him, and I suspect this might be the case, then I could see that he might be a rubber stamp. I just don't see how giving your HC a say in the talent that he will be coaching indicates this character trait. A 'yes' man would give total control to those around him IMO.
I don't think so. I think he gets one pick. He really didn't want Stephen Hill as an example and the Jets gave up a pick to trade up for him.
I don't know how much credit I give the players around Sanchez for the win yesterday. The main difference yesterday compared to all those awful losses is the Rams turned it over three times and the Jets did not turn it over once. So yeah, if Sanchez suddenly stops turning it over, the Jets will improve in the standings. Maybe he won't have another red zone turnover all the rest of the year. Sounds like a plan. Let's see if they can make it work. But I won't be holding my breath. Now none of this means I think there's a lot of talent around Sanchez. But the lack of talent around him is not what has primarily been involved in his turnovers. Bradford looked pretty good early yesterday, and you want to talk about someone who has a lack of talent... Amendola is good when healthy, but did you see that stat where the Rams have lost every game he's missed? Jackson is not good enough, as good as he is, to carry that team. And after Amendola, Bradford has no one to throw to. The three hits that took St. Louis out were Smith's int, which was a real hit on Bradford's self confidence, Wilkerson's excellent strip, and Amendola getting hurt. Anyway, I digress. Yeah, if Sanchez stops the turnovers, the Jets will get better even with the lack of talent on the roster.
Bradford has bust written all over him at this point. It's not that he isn't a decent QB but he's not more than that and as the 1 pick he's going to wind up disappointing. This is the kind of guy that if Norv Turner had him he'd be a top 10 guy easily but in the kind of offense he is stuck in right now he'll be pedestrian until the Rams decide to move on. He still had a chance after the disappointing season last year but having Brian Schottenheimer foisted off on him really capped things in a big way.
I don't intend to talk too much about Bradford. But his numbers are better this year than last year. His main problem is a thin OL and no talent at receiver other than a fragile Amendola. Lucky they have Jackson, but that's really it for them when Amendola is gimpy.
So what you're saying is that Bradford is a slightly better version of Mark Sanchez caught in similar circumstances in terms of coaching, personnel and general cluelessness in the front office? Like Sanchez he has an older mainstay back who is really likely to vanish on him suddenly, leaving a gaping hole behind him in the backfield. Like Sanchez he has the weight of the franchise on his shoulders and time is running out. If he's not Peyton Rodgers-Brady in a year or two he's sunk. I watched Andrew Luck, the #1 overall pick this year earlier this season. I watched Sam Bradford, the #1 overall pick in 2010 yesterday. I've, of course, been watching Sanchez all season. Bradford is on the Sanchez timeline not the Luck timeline. He's going to wake up over the summer to the reality that Air Schotty is what is coming his way next season as the Rams phase out a 30 year old Stephen Jackson. He's going to have the same thin o-line that he does now and the same crappy receivers - and he's toast. Developing a franchise QB is not about putting all your eggs in one basket and letting it rip. It's about building the team around them to let them flourish, a process the Jets completely skipped with Sanchez, preferring to go for it twice in a row instead. It's a process the Rams are largely ignoring around Bradford. He has bust written all over him.
Here are some QBs from yesterday who are either rookies or not considered top QBs that don’t have talent around them. Joss Freeman – Tampa Bay 25/46 – 248 yds – 3 TDs – 2 ints Chad Henne – Jacksonville 16/33 – 354 yrds – 4 TDs Robert Griffin III – Washington 14/15 – 200 yrds – 4 TDs Brandon Weedon – Cleveland 20/35 – 210 yrds – 2 TDs Sam Bradford – Rams 23/44 – 170 yrds – 2 TDs – 1 int Mark Sanchez – Jets 15/20 – 178 yrds – 1 TD And thats considered a good game for Mark because he made a few throws and didn’t screw anything up so our defense could win us the game. Lots of QBs on mediocre offenses that still made things happen. I will say Mark actually read the defense yesterday. Maybe that’s a sign of better things to come?
Good Quarterback play masks a lot of problems, and poor quarterback play enhances them. That has been true from the dawn of football.
Henne is the sole reason I feel Rex doesn't have any say in the quarterback department. He was the most logical FA acquisition in history. A viable back-up that played for our new OC. IMO, Tanny doesn't want true competition, as Sanchez is his guy.
