I got to thinking today, maybe we put Sanchez in the position to fail. Maybe he isn't quite as bad as people make him out to be. We all saw what he can do when given receivers and a killer offensive line, but maybe we created this mess he is in currently. No receivers to throw to, Hill, who constantly drops passes, and bringing in Tebow. He can say all he wants that Tebow coming in for snaps doesn't affect him, but it is completely obvious it does. Against Seattle, Tebow was brought in after a 30+ yard completion by Sanchez and Mark was caught throwing his hands up in disbelief when Tebow came running on the field. Look what happen yesterday. Tebow took 3 snaps all game and Sanchez prospered, even with no real threats at WR. This all comes back to our FO being complete morons. You think this could be the reason for his inconsistency?
We have been through this a million times, and a million times more in multiple threads. I do agree though, the FO hasn't done much to help the kid whether it be draft or FA.
This is being rehashed again? Yes - we are all well aware of this. WR carousel Poor running Game No development of OLine.
Is there any evidence that Mark Sanchez can complete enough passes in the normal circumstances that NFL QB's face to be a plus player for the Jets? The Jets *have* done a lousy job of developing him but at this point it is not clear that even a good plan would have turned Sanchez into an average QB let alone a good one. Sanchez has thrown 1,728 regular season passes through yesterday. He has completed 55% of them. He's thrown 60 regular season interceptions for a 3.5% interception rate. He's done both of those things despite being asked to pass less often than most QB's over his career, just 30 throws a game. That's a large and mounting body of evidence that he's just not a particularly good passer and whatever else is true in the NFL today it is clear that you must be a good passer to be a good QB. The one year he had at USC with the 65% completion percentage is looking like the anomaly in his career, not the 4 years of below average passing in the NFL.
This is true. I'm not trying to repeat threads. What I'm getting at is that yesterday, a question was raised. Did not putting Tebow in, cause him to succeed? Or was it just a conincidence that occurred?
NO DOUBT Sanchez has been put in a terrible position. This is common knowledge now. Still, fans expect him to succeed in this mess, or hit the road. Classic.
Sanchez probably should not have started his first season. Better yet we should not have used a #1 pick on a guy who only started one season in college. But when he did start he was in no way “put in a position to fail”. He had a top O line and running game. Even with these huge assets by the end of the season we had to color code the play book with “safe plays”. The next season he had a top O line, the number 1 running game, and good receivers. How many young QBs would kill to be on an offense like that? All he had to do was worry about learning to be an NFL QB. Both seasons he had a good defense that didn’t need him to throw 3 TDs a game. In the real world this is called "putting him in a position to succeed." It’s not “ he was developed improperly” it’s more like “he didn’t develop”.
What changes around the Jets if Sanchez stays? Something has to change in a big way for the Jets to get back on track again. Waiting around for the defense to become dominant again so that we can then discover that that's not enough against the best QB's in the game is not my idea of a productive use of the next few years. The way I see it the only change that is ultimately going to fix things is to change the people who evaluate and acquire talent for the Jets. As long as Sanchez hangs around being a mediocre QB and that is ok the bigger changes necessary will not occur. I wouldn't mind seeing Sanchez as the caretaker for the franchise slot for the next year or two but not if the price of doing so is that the guys who found and drafted Brooks Bollinger, Kellen Clemens, Erik Ainge, Mark Sanchez and Greg McElroy are the guys picking the next one. I've seen enough from them to know that the guys in the current Jets FO cannot pick QB's for their life. I don't need another go round on that carousel.
Let's look at Freeman and Sanchez both struggled last season. This year Freeman gets Vincent Jackson , Dallas Clark and Doug Martin. He miraculously becomes a very good Qb. Sanchez gets a rookie in Hill a hurt holmes and hurt Keller and he struggles.mmmmmmmmm Shocking
Changes I would make include: Firing Tannenbaum, firing Sparano, releasing/trading Tebow, signing a quality back-up, add a veteran WR with talent, maybe replace Keller, depending what is available. If they do that, plus get Revis and Holmes back in in 2013, the Jets can still be a top team.
This roster is not a top team roster. There are too many players on it that are either playing out the string, confirmed to be mediocre or have issues that could pop up at any moment and derail the team. The Jets have a core of less than a dozen guys that will be on the team in the next window. Wilkerson, Coples, Ellis (probably), Harris (probably), Davis (probably), Revis (probably), Cromartie (probably), Mangold (probably), D'Brick, Kerley, maybe a few others as sudden risers or surprise retentions. All the probablys above are attached to players getting late prime with either injury histories or contract situations that could screw things up or alternately young players we don't know enough about yet. There really isn't a lot of talent on the team. It's just clustered in a few places where it stands out, like CB and the DL.
The FO doesn't throw the consistent stupid passes Sanchez does. The FO doesn't show the immaturity of Sanchez. The FO doesn't have horrible pocket presence, and the FO doesn't throw passes short, High, and everywhere in between. Is it possible to have an upgraded running game, WR corp, OL? Of course. He managed the game well yesterday, and he is great? Come on man
We lost the 49ers game due to self-inflicted wounds time and time again. I was never really sold on the 49ers, but the past few weeks, they haven't looked impressive at all. Mark needs to start stringing good games together, maybe 3 or 4 games before this topic is even revisited.
The problem with Sanchez is that when he goes bad he falls off the cliff bad. He tries to make things happen but ultimately just ends up making the mistakes. The fumble in NE the Fumble in Seattle not to mention that pick in the end zone. He also under a microscope and every mistake is amplified and he torn apart. Sanchez at this point in his career and the weapons he has on offensive needs a running game to be effective. Unless we get Brady, Manning, Rogers or Bees there is really nothing better out there with this current group of players. Go get a running back beef up the o-line and bring in a vet receiver still in their prime. All needed before bringing in another Qb for jets fans to hate. By the way who was last Jets Qb that fans liked?
Holmes, panic attack, when he injured his putty-toe, ended any chance of a late game comeback. Just 'Tone being 'Tone.
Yeah, the concept of acceptable losses vs unacceptable ones doesn't seem to register a lot of the time with Sanchez. He has from time to time recognized that he needed to go down NOW or there were going to be bigger problems but he is probably the worst QB I have ever seen at making the throw-it-away/hold it another second decision. He almost never throws it away until contact has happened and then he is not in control of the throw. Mark Sanchez taking the field in Pittsburgh in the AFC championship game in 2010.
