Being a billionaire has nothing to do with it. He could be a trillionaire, but the Jets are still constrained by the same cap limits as all the other NFL teams. This isn't about what Woody can afford, this is about what the Jets can afford to spend under the cap.
When the Jets actually had the window cranked open the thing that did the heavy cranking was Woody's wallet. The Jets had one of the highest pay rolls in the league over the period from 2008 to 2010. He put his money where his mouth was. Now that had a lot to do with trying to make more money out of PSL's but nobody can say that Woody didn't put every dime he could reasonably have spent into the process. That continued with his willingness to pick up another through the roof salary in Asomugha in the very short free agent season last year.
I can see that point. What I'm just trying to say is that it doesn't really work the other way around. Woody having big bucks allows us to spend the max, but no matter how much money he has we will still be limited by the cap ultimately. For instance, if we had picked up Asomugha we would have had to cut somewhere else in order to deal with the cap. See what I mean? This seems to be why some are arguing we are making moves that save a few hundred K. It isn't about Woody's money but how much we can spend under the cap. Otoh, I have to admit that there are some areas (many outside of cap considerations) where Woody's money probably makes a difference, like hiring coaches and, as you mentioned, being able to absorb certain types of ultra-expensive contracts.
Considering how cheap Tanny is (one of the reasons we have bad depth is because he clearly stated on HK that he wants to spend the minimum on every non-starter on the team) it wouldn't surprise me...
On a well stocked team with a plan to replenish every season maybe 4 or 5 of those guys would be back next year. The guys too expensive to be backups and not good enough to be starters would be the first to go. The guys over 30 or headed for a deal at 29 or 30 would be next.
i know the wood man had a press conference today, i heard a little bit of it and he sounded like a jackass as usual. my question is did anyone ask him about this? if the cap ramifications regarding these players were creating the situation with playing time that we are seeing now? god i hate woody johnson, please oh please can you please get together with the wilpons and figure out a way to sell both teams? please
Don't bother... He just doesn't get the concept of a "cap"... Kinda like our government not understanding a debt ceiling
if it really needs explaining then no, what I was saying was in response to another post that we had a load of free agents next year and I was making the point that whilst we do have a lot of FAs none are premium players or likely to command especially high salaries - its not like next year we have revis, cro, mangold, ferguson and Wilkerson all coming up for new deals.
This team is 3-6 this year and has been blown out in half of their losses. They're 3-9 in the last 12 games that matter. Would it be such a bad thing to lose 11 starters if that trend continues?
If the Jets resign name brand guys like Keller then they're accepting mediocrity and the cycle will continue. Let the free agents walk, and dump the crap (Pace). Only Revis deserves new money and I'd bet anything he doesn't get it.
Starters who almost certainly aren't part of the next window: NT - Sione Pouha LOLB - Calvin Pace ROLB - Bryan Thomas FS - Yeremiah Bell LG - Matt Slauson RG - Brandon Moore FB - Lex Hilliard Starters who probably won't be around: SS - LaRon Landry RT - Austin Howard WR - Santonio Holmes QB - Mark Sanchez RB - Shonn Greene That's a lot of guys who are kind of hanging on at this point. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see 11 new starters on this team by 2014.
