what would have happened if Manning chose the Jets? He is getting 90 millions over five years. I wondered about that.
A man with a surplus can control circumstances, but a man without a surplus is controlled by them, and often has no opportunity to exercise judgment.
The Jets would have had to unload Sanchez' contract immediately via trade or cut other high priced players to fit both he and Sanchez' guaranteed money under the cap. Basically, it was impossible for it to workout with the Jets.
Excuse me? I think its a smart way to run the organization this way. Every team does it. They put escalators and play time in contracts. It is up to the players to prove their worth. If Tebow truly was a starting caliber QB (like a top 10 NFL QB), he would have been taking 99% of the snaps with Sanchez taking the kneel down snaps if any. Those incentives are there to prove their worth. Tebow showed he wasn't better than Sanchez in the OTAs and minicamp. NFL just isn't the business about loyalty. Players make tons of money and bust (gholston), some players make far less but outperform their contracts (David Harris' rookie contract), and some players are paid fairly. Players get released for cap purposes all the time. When we released Gholston, we essentially finished his NFL career. He still had a year left and could have earned a few extra mils, but he failed to do so. That doesn't mean the team controlled Ghost's "earning potential". Now we want to release Holmes and possibly Sanchez, but we can't due to their respective contract wording (cap hit). It happens all the time in the NFL and every single team does it in case you don't know.
I thought we had a lot of guys hitting free agency next season. How the f'k are we going to be a disaster in the cap ? This shit sucks.
Problem is, we have this thing called salary cap, which you are unaware of. In a nutshell, it puts a cap on teams total spending on players for any given year. Even if Bill Gates owned the Jets, that salary cap figure was not going to change for him. Maybe you should stick with baseball?
Manning & No Sanchez wouldn't be such a big difference this season & next season (salary-wise) since Sanchez is already one of the highest paid players in NFL. If Jets acquired Manning, they'd have to do exactly what Denver did & unload the previous starting QB. Manning+Sanchez together = salary cap hell.
My general thought was Sanchez's guarenteed money was driving the decision to let him remain the starter. However, as the weeks have passed it has made no sense why he is still starting and Tebow is not being given an opporunity. This is a very well written article and interesting theory that makes perfect sense. There is no way in hell the Jets can afford the escalators for Tebow along with Sanchez's guarenteed money. Paints a pretty bleak picture and makes one think they are at a point where if I would rather start rebuilding in 2013 then waiting until 2014 or beyond. I think there is a pretty strong lesson to be learned about sacrificing depth, bad drafts, expensive free agents and foolish restructuring along with a clear picture of how badly Tannenbaum has handled the team and the need for him to be fired.
With the SB up here next season there is zero chance that rebuild happens next year. It's also why Rex/Tanny have jobs guaranteed next season. Jets don't wanna deal with rebuilding or switching regimes either. It's a short-term thinking of what's best for next season trumps what's best in the long-run.
because he gives us so many options and looks on our offense, opposing defenses must be terrified when they see that two headed monster of Sanchiae and the Tebowminator facing them down!!!!!1111
Is there anyone listed below that you would be devastated to lose? I cant think of any. There is certainly no-one that has played themselves into a big payday compared to their current deal (except maybe Landry but he has to show he can stay healthy for a whole season). Shonn Greene RB Dustin Keller TE LaRon Landry S Yeremiah Bell S Mike DeVito DE Dedrick Epps TE Nick Folk K Lex Hilliard RB Robert Malone P Brandon Moore G Daniel Muir DT Tanner Purdum CB Chaz Schilens WR Matt Slauson G Bryan Thomas LB
Fair point that I didn't consider but if they did a rebuild starting next year, do you honestly think the team be much worse then trying to get through a cap strapped year with declining talent?
If this is your free agency list the concern is both safeties plus 2 OL and a lot of depth needing to be resigned with only 11 mil in space to do it. Having to sign 17 guys with 11 mil further depreciates the talent and specifically, the depth.
you cant have a backup qb who is not allowed to play. we need a backup qb who can step in and play snaps. we are in a position where we dont have one. forget about the bad contracts and the rest that we have that make it impossible to have a guard earn an extra 400k and absolutely no depth. you just cant have guys on the roster who are not allowed to play, it was obviously terrible planning on many levels. i get how it works, i dont like it many times but this is different from how it works this is just a terrible job.
In light of the Mehta article....if it's worth any grain of salt...you have to acknowledge that there may be no Tebow time at all this year...not even if Sanchez plays worse every game. We can already be sure that any FO would not want Tebow to hit that escalator, considering their 2013 cap situation (and the inflated salary makes Tebow considerably less marketable in a trade scenario). But some of us have presumed that once the salary escalation concern is removed from the situation, we would see Tebow play. If the team, and perhaps the coaches as well, feel as negatively about Tebow as Mehta portrays, I doubt he'll get to play. Even if he did play and they were eliminated from the playoffs, any success from Tebow would lead to second guessing and questions about why he didn't play earlier, before they were eliminated. Tebowmania, at least through today, seems like an issue the Jets have no desire to really deal with...only profit from through some kind of negative media/bad team dynamic that I cannot understand.
my point is simply that there is no-one on that list that is going to be able to get some kind of blockbuster pay deal or that could not be replaced - its notlike we have revis, cro, ferguson, mangold and wilkerson all coming out of contract next year.
