Trading a 2nd round draft pick for Antonio Cromartie. We traded a 5th round pick for Santonio Holmes. Philadelphia also had our 5th and 6th picks somehow for the 2011 draft also. We also signed aging veterans in Jason Taylor and L.T. instead of going for youth. I always had a feeling that it would come back to haunt us, we had to win it all that year and we came close but we didnt. I believe if we didnt take that "all in" approach we could have had more long sustained success, we might not have had as good of a year in 2010, but for the long term we would have been better. Should we have done that in 2010? again had we won it all it would have been worth it, but we didnt.....
It was clearly a calculated decision to go all in back then. It is easy to say now that was a mistake and I am sure many back then said as much as Sanchez was even less of a QB than he is now. My humble opinion...we are here today because of win now player management a few years ago.
No matter how the 2009/2010 season ended we were still in this position now. Anyone who didnt expect a rebuild/retool seasons out of 2012 2013 was kidding them selves. We have grabbed alot of youth last couple seasons and will continue to build ont his. We would love for our guys to step up and pull a few good seasons out while we go threw this but its not happening so what. 1-2 more drafts with out giving all our picks away and this team is set pretty well for the future.
Its a result of wasting draft picks on qb with almost no experience then coddling him into the most pathetic, feeble minded pussy who feels entitled to his position. What message does that send to teammates?
The biggest mistake we made and the only one im truly crying about is the rework/extention of sanchez contract.
I still agree with the decision to go all in, we were right there. One stop.... The thing is organizations like the Steelers, Giants, Patriots, would never take this approach. Obviously its easier for them because they have upper tier QBs.
I feel like we are rebuilding, thats why we arent bringing guys like Edwards and others. I think the Jets are now trying to set themselves for long term success, than rather bringing in new guys every year to patch holes. Another thing to note, if there was EVER a time to part ways with Tannenbaum it would be after this year. We are losing 18 players, so it would be the perfect time to bring a new gm in and build a whole new team. Either that or Tannebaum will build the future with those 18 holes in the roster.
Poor drafting really. Failure to adress RT and LG. RG is now declining. QB sucks, WR absolutely abysmal. Defense is competent the skill positions are lacking skill.
Cromartie has been worth the pick-we let guys go a year too early and not keeping edwards was a mistake. Team has been left with no leader.. Sanchez I'm at a loss of words with at this point. Atleast I can't try and defend him like I have in the past. He looks terrible and I don't know how or if he can come out of it at this point.
It’s the result of going all in 2009 AND 2010. But mostly it’s the result of drafting a hammered shit QB and waiting 4 years for him to not be hammered shit. Teams don’t win with hammered shit QBs unless they have an all star cast around them.
Cromartie was worth the pick based on his play but it's a formula that takes a toll on the cap. You lose the chance to acquire a potentially quality player who will be playing for basically nothing for 4 years. The Jets have surrendered a ton of picks either trading for veterans or moving up in the draft. It kills depth and leaves the team in poor cap shape.
2009 set the bar so high. I remember Francessa saying after the loss to the colts, that the Jets in 2010 will now have to at least get back to the AFC game because they set the bar so high in year 1, I think thats why they went all in, in 2010. They felt the pressure to take the next step because anything less than an AFC:CG would be considered regression which isnt acceptable for any team thats supposed to be on the rise. Look at the 49ers, if that team doesnt make it to the championship game, their will be a huge backlash, people will say they regressed, that they are going backwards, when in fact they just overachieved year 1. TBH a year 1 championship game for any new coach is looking more and more like a curse, the Ravens felt this to after 2008, the Jets had to deal with it, and now the 49ers are dealing with immense pressure right now.
Chased Nnamdi, traded for Tebow. Neglected offensive line and thought certain players would step up and in the end are only average (or below average) players. Didn't look to build on the success, got too cocky after beating the Patriots. Now were 1 game away from the AFC Basement. Dumb fucking decisions. I'd rather get that monkey that can drive in Grandma's boy to run this team than Bradway, Tanny and Woody
It may or may not have been, that 2nd round pick could have been used for more youth, and then ontop of that we would have 10 million dollars more for more talent, instead we had to pay 10 million for Cromartie, rather than losing a pick and losing 10 million for cromartie. We could have so much more depth with that pick + the 10 million. Thats why this team has no depth honestly, the Cromartie thing is the perfect example. It looks good up front because he has played well, but across the team it might have hurt us more than it has benefited us. Its all calculated though, thats what the GM has to decide.
Today is the result of the draft for the last 5 or 6 years. Nothing more or less. The Jets have produced exactly one star caliber player from the draft since 2007 in Darrelle Revis. They have produced no star caliber players in the 5 drafts from 2008 to 2012. They've exercised fewer picks also during that span, leading to depth issues all over the roster. When you don't find stars in the draft and you don't find depth in the draft where does that leave you?
But that's where trading away picks also factors in. You can't afford to swing and miss when you don't have a full allotment of picks.
