This.. I can't stand when he does this. The guy is a good 2-3 steps ahead, drops a ball, and Wilson talks shit on him like he was the reason the pass wasn't caught. Come on, when you get beat, just get back to the line and shut up.
WIlson was picked the same off season the Jets picked up Cro. I liked the emphasis on cb at the time, I will admit, but in hindsight the Jets had the starting #2 cb covered when they got Cro. It became clear that Wilson was more an insurance play if contract situations dictated that Revis or Cro could not be retained. But it became clear fairly soon in Wilson's rookie season that he was not about to become a quality starter. Ryan likes cb's because they are key to his D, but of course that doesn't mean that Wilson was a good pick. I frankly concede in off season discussions of football that I have a real weakness in judging candidates for the draft, since I basically do not follow college football (don't have the time). Did Wilson look like a good candidate at the time? I can't speak to that personally, but as it turned out, he was not first round quality, and I am certain if Ryan had it to do over again, Wilson would not have been picked.
I also enjoyed the focus on CB in a passing league. To the pre draft reports, I'm not sure either on those. I think everyone projected him to be a great nickel corner. And that's what the Jets wanted him to be, someone that could hold his own since Cro and Revis are on the outside. It was a new position for him but he was supposed to be able to handle it. Who knows. I think the bigger mistake in hindsight was going corner there than drafting Wilson once choosing to go corner
Does any one else see the irony, that Ryan likes DBs because of the nature of the offence in the NFL. But on offence wants to go against the obvious trend of this being a passing league and ground and pound. Jets secondary good - even without Revis they haave done a respectable job for the most part. Jets offence - maybe the worst WR corps in the league. Definetley no one to fear or game plan for. Hopefully Hill will be that guy in the future.
Having watched him at Boise State where he played CB on the outside generally on the teams best receiver, he was pretty good. After watching him in college I am surprised he is having as much difficulty as he is with the basics (turning his head to look for the ball) now because it did not seem to be a problem in college. I guess he has not adjusted to the speed of the game yet....
On one hand it should go without saying that the nickel cb is your most important defensive player off the bench. On average he will play more downs than anyone else on the bench, even more than some starters, depending on the opponent. So I don't disparage the importance of the nickel back. but in spite of that, you don't use your first round pick to fill the nickel back slot. I don't think that was the medium to long term plan for Wilson. Yeah, they obviously were going to start Revis and Cro that first year, but Cro could well have been gone after that first year if, among other things, Wilson had played much better. but he didn't, and the Jets ended up paying a big number to retain Cro. I don't think that was the plan.
i will always think of rex proclaiming that he will be a starter right after they drafted him. of all the stupid things that rex has ever said that was one of the ones that will always stick out to me. i am positive they didnt expect to have to bring cro back, that was a huge issue as they could have had a low first rounder on his rookie contract starting opposite revis... but instead they decided to pay cromo 8 million or whatever it was. and here we are with no depth throughout the team.
Wilson is decent in the slot, but he doesn't seem to have the necessary speed & skillset to cover the outside. He gets burned a lot in deep coverage. I wouldn't mind seeing him take some reps at safety to see if it works out better.
Wilson is still better than the other CBs on the roster minus Revis and Cro. And btw CB is the deepest unit on the team, followed by D-line. We're only noticing issues because Revis is out. People don't realize that we're spoiled with Revis and Cromartie. Most of the better CBs in the league get burned for TDs almost every week. None are better than Revis and only a handful are better than Cromartie. Cro earned his contract. I think they were going to resign him regardless, unless Wilson became a dominating stud. People act like predicting the future is easy. "OMG we didn't draft studs every year! They don't know talent". Yeah lets pretend they didn't draft Revis, Mangold, Ferguson or Harris.
So it seems consensus that Kyle Wilson sucks, though he seems OK as a third CD. Here are some radical moves: - Convert him to safety - Convert Joe McKnight to CB
As the starter of this I feel the need to say Wildon is simply trash ... Nickel or outside kid is fucking shit
Wilson is not decent anywhere, he is just another complete first round bust given to us by our zen master GM.
