Why doesn't S. Hill catch more balls with his hands?

I'm certainly not the most informed or experienced person when it comes to this type of analysis, but is anyone else worried that S. Hill has a tendency to catch balls with his body and not with his hands and may be doing so because he doesn't trust his hands?

There's been a couple of drops he's had this season - at least one in the EZ IRRC - where the ball bounced off his chest. His big drop in the NE game went off his hands.

The other thing I can see on the college highlight reels is that he doesn't go up and get balls at their highest point, thereby not taking advantage of his height.

I hope he's getting coached up constantly about these issues.

Yes, So far his hands have shown to be less that expected although he did have a stellar game 1 with them

This has been discussed. He tends to let the ball get too deep. He would have caught that ball in the Patriots game had he not looked away from it at the last second. He needs to focus on catching the ball and then running/absorbing contact.

    That was a sick catch.

the guy isnt Calvin Johnson, Georgia Techs offense will hinder the development of any WR

Denariyus Thomas took time too. same scouting report. amazing athlete, capable of circus catches yet inconsistent hands.

The only time I ever got pissed at Hill for a drop was last week on 3rd and 2 to seal the game.

Other than that his drops dont bother me that much cause I expect them from time to time and hes still making plays to make up for them.

I dont expect him to be consistent till next year.

I'm just happy to see a WR who can create separation almost at will. we havent had that in what seemed like a lifetime ago

Because he's young and inexperienced in the passing game. Give him time and I think he will develop nicely. Actually, I think he's progressed really well so far this year.

Yeah, I don't think anybody expected him to develop as quickly as he has. To be honest, I didn't think he was going to start the season as a starter.

As otehrs said, this was one of the main issues with him coming out of school. He is a rookie with limited NCAA experince, but his upside is amazing. If he can improve his focus and catch with his hands away from his body more we have a gem in the second. His route running which was also in doubt coming out of GT looks to be at least adaquate and I belive with his attitude and work ethic it will only improve.

Hill was born with a genetic defect that causes limbs not to develop. Hill plays with a prosthetic limb from the elbow down on both arms.

I know this for a FACT because I've seen him try to catch a football.

Go easy on him. He can't even tie his own shoes for Christ sake.

Maybe Stephen Hill just isn't a natural pass-catcher? He wouldn't be the first track star to put on pads in high school and dominate based on size and speed there.

For the record Stephen Hill does hold a Georgia HS record: in the long jump.

The simple answer is the ball hit him in his hands the last place a Jet receiver would ever expect Sanchez to throw the ball. The Pats game involved great catch after great catch on very poorly thrown balls. How many times did we see Jet receivers dive for balls in the dirt, catch high thrown balls. At least half the receptions that day were on terrible throws and every incompletion except the Hill drop involved poorly thrown passes.

I don't understand the focus on the 1 drop of the game where if Sanchez had any kind of accuracy this game would have been over long before the Hill drop. The receivers had a great game, they were wide open all day and made some really great catches. Hill messed up and tried to run with the ball before it arrived. There were plenty of other mistakes in the game just as costly. Give the kid a break, he plays hard has made some nice catches, blocks extremely well and has provided us with a needed deep threat.

This is just not true at all. I saw three great catches all game, two by Keller and one by Kerley. Even one of those great catches by Keller was a dime in between two players for a TD. Every other ball was well thrown and on time minus the INT. I am in no way a Sanchez homer, but he played very well against the Patriots. It is just the dumb mistakes that piss us off. Your Sanchez hate blinds you. When he plays well, praise him. When he plays poorly, shit on him.

Don't turn this into a Sanchez thread. After the whole Sanchez hate thing, your post was right on the money. Hill is exactly what we hoped he would provide.

He's gonna need to work on his hands because the passes from Sanchez right to the numbers are few and far between. He will have to be able to adjust to some poorly thrown balls. He's just a rook but he has already shown flashes of his talent and i am excited to watch him develop.

He has the ability to do that. It all comes down to focus. Watch the ball in and then try to make the run after if you can. As bad as the drop in the pats game was it is a correctable mistake.

He tried to run before having the ball in his hands. Typical rookie mistake. They'll fix that.
