    NHL makes 50-50 revenue split offerTuesday, 10.16.2012 / 1:16 PM / News

TORONTO -- The NHL made a proposal for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement on Tuesday, one designed to allow an 82-game schedule for 2012-13 NHL season to take place.

"We very much want to preserve a full 82-game season and in that light we made a proposal, an offer really," Commissioner Gary Bettman said. "It is our best shot at preserving an 82-game regular season and [Stanley Cup] Playoffs."

Commissioner Bettman announced the proposal after he and Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly held an hour-long meeting with the National Hockey League Players' Association Executive Director Don Fehr and Special Counsel Steve Fehr at the Union office.

Bettman said that the offer, which splits hockey-related revenue at 50-50, is contingent upon a full season being played and suggested that the season could begin Nov. 2. He also said the League is not asking for salary rollbacks from the players.

"We're focused on getting the season started on Nov. 2. That's what this offer was about."

The NHLPA is expected to address the proposal soon.

Players will turn it around much much faster than that, by Friday at the latest. They will make a counter and meet, and I expect the lockout to be officially over by next week. I don't see how a Novemeber start & 82 game season is possible though. I'm thinking more like 72 game season starting November 15

TSN dicks said they would pick up the original sked starting Nov 2 to early April, then put most of the make-up games thru til the end of April, and sprinkle in some games here and there where appropriate. Playoffs would end in late June.

The NHL doesn't want to lose the Winter Classic and All-Star Game, that's big for them.

..Sidney Crosby didn’t try to break Claude Giroux’s wrists, but if he did, good

    .By Harrison Mooney
.Shortly after the Philadelphia Flyers were eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs, Claude Giroux went under the knife to repair fractures to both of his wrists. But the symmetrical scars remain, and in July, he was asked about them by Kevin Anderson of the Timmins Press.

"J'accuse, Sidney Crosby!" said Giroux. (Well, basically. Crosby was the culprit, according to Giroux. His response just wasn't quite so Zola-esque*.) From the Timmins Press:

"Those are from (Sidney) Crosby," he says half smiling, but with some tension in his voice. "Every time we'd line up against each other for a face-off during our (2012 playoff) series, instead of going for the puck when it was dropped, he'd hack me across the wrists. I ended up playing the series against (New) Jersey with one of them fractured and had to go for surgery on both of them after we were out of the playoffs."

Crosby did that? Former Timbits player Sidney Crosby? But he seems so nice!

Or not. On Wednesday, Crosby (i.e., the accused) sat down with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette to talk the lockout, among other topics. One such other topic: Claude Giroux's broken wrists, and the role Crosby played in how they got that way. So did he see the faceoff circle as the fairgrounds for slash-a-palooza on Giroux's wrists?

"No. I really like to win the faceoff.

    Oh, OK.

I don't try to go after his wrists but if I caught it, I'm not sorry for it.

    Hold up. What?

I think it's hilarious I hear that stuff from Philly. It's comedy to me to be honest with you. They're probably involved in that stuff more than any team in the league and they're the ones always talking about it. I guess I'm not apologetic. I was trying to win a faceoff and if I caught his wrist, then I caught his wrist. He seemed to play okay so I couldn't have hurt him that bad."

So, in other words, Sidney Crosby didn't try to break Claude Giroux's wrists, and they certainly didn't seem broken, but if he did, that's totally fine with him.

These guys are so nasty to each other. Janet Jackson nasty.

Among the myriad reasons the lockout needs to end right the heck now: we need to get these two back on a sheet of ice while they're still mad about last year's playoffs (read: temporarily insane), and before they forget how much they hate each other.

I think they get this deal done, but not without some push back first.

●The players share will be 50%, down from 57%

●The top of the cap will be $59.9 million, down from over $70 million under the new CBA. The teams will have a one-year grace period to get under that new cap

●If a player signed to one of those absurdly long, front loaded deals is traded, the new team is responsible for all aspects of that player's contract, unless the player retires or quits before the end of it.
Then, the responsibility shifts back to the old team (nice deterrent!)

●Entry level deals will be two years long instead of three, allowing younger stars a payday sooner

●UFA eligibility begins at age 28 or if they have 8 seasons under their belt

●The longest a contract can last is five years

    ●No more re-entry waivers

●The top ten clubs will create the revenue sharing pool, and the other 20 will be able to draw from it, including teams in large media markets

●The commish no longer reviews discipline reviews; it will be an independent arbitrator

●No rollback in current contracts, but the players will be getting paid subject to escrow

This will effect the teams with money (RANGERS) I remember reading yesterday that this will have a big impact on Brad Richards contract.

Not looking good on negotiations now. I thought the owner's offer was fair but looks like it was a ploy for public support seeing as they didn't even seem to think about the three counter offers the PA gave...although maybe those were so bad they didn't have to think about it.

At this point I think it's a battle of egos between Bettman and Fehr. They both get paid for this specific reason, to justify their wages I think they'll gladly sacrifice a season. Doesn't affect their pay.

NHLPA is going to have to accept a 50/50 HRR. The NFL and NBA have it that way, the NHL will soon follow. We've already seen a whole year wiped out, wouldn't be surprised to see another.

And honestly, if you own a team and are losing money every year, I understand why the owners want more. There are like 10 profitable franchises in this league, the rest lose money, some even during winning seasons.

Not surprised the counter offers were shot down. I guess the owners don't understand all these guys can play in europe and make money.
