It sounds over simplistic, but I think this was pretty much it. Stop the run, force 3rd and long and tee off on the QB. On offense, run the rock down their throat and mix in the pass to keep them honest. Of course it's a lot easier to accomplish when facing a team that doesn't run the ball well or stop the run well. I love how Sparano found something that was working and never stopped.
It's a good gameplan when it works, but it is ugly when it doesn't. Everyone had career days today, they all need to maintain this level of play.
Honestly that strategy is really solid. What coach doesn't want to do these things? It's the tactics and personnel that have made this strategy unattainable. Great game. Hope they keep it up.
Yeah thats it basically. We dont really have the personnel for it... Yeah Shonn Greene had a good game, but he needs a lot more of those to convince me he should be on this team next year. We havent been able to stop the run, but we did today so we'll see how that pans out (and once again against a poor run offense). Also, our OL has to play well in the run game like they did today. Anybody notice Coples and Davis played a lot more? See what it did? I didnt watch Davis (but he did play a lot on 3rd down) much but Coples impressed me and theres no reason why he shouldnt be on the field 90% of the game vs NE. He has showed us he is a strength against the run and can rush the passer. This next game is why we draft Coples and Davis, their playing time needs to continue to increase.
The Jets were overdue for a game like this. We saw the Ground and Pound and we saw pressure on the QB. When everything is clicking, everybody looks good and happy. We won a game yesterday we were supposed to win but the surprise was the margin of victory and how much of a gap there is between the Jets and the up and coming Colts. The CS had a good day yesterday against a capable but inferior opponent. Its back to the drawing board to prepare against a NE team that does not look as mighty as they used. This CS will have to have another well thought out and prepared game plan to win, the stupid penalties must be reduced and the running game has to show up for the Jets to have any chance in this game Not asking too much am I?
Hasn't that been Rex's vision for the team since he took over in 2009 though? I'm not trying to be a douche I just don't see any changes in philosophy or anything, just that it actually worked this week.
You are absolutely right. But we haven't seen a game like this in a while. And the new OC fit right in line with the philosophy by repeatedly smashing them in the mouth.
And lets remember the Colts are terrible and rebuilding!! Today an average team took advantage of mistakes from a bad team. Lets all remember what we did to the Bills week One. I still think the Pats smash us, but hopefully we are growing as a team with young guys getting a shot. That should help us in the future.
I'm not much of a Sparano fan but the thing I like about him most is that when something is working he's not afraid to go to it over and over until they stop it. He doesn't outsmart himself by getting too cute or stashing stuff away. I suppose I dislike like that about him as well though when nothing's working or when he goes to a similar play too often for a loss haha. I'm not much of an expert in rushing schemes but didn't it seem like they ran a lot more zone running plays this week? I know when Sparano was hired he was talked about bringing in the man rushing/blocking style, and I know he tried that alot the first 5 weeks. It's as if he almost scrapped that this week, going back to what the line and RBs were most comfortable with in zone running (particularly Greene).. Maybe I'm wrong about this but it certainly seemed like a lot of zone running plays.. and they looked a hell of a lot more comfortable running the ball. You might have your own philosophies but sometimes you have to put those on the backburner because of your personnel.. kudos to Sparano for being flexible enough to realize this, even though I've been one of his biggest critics HAHA
i think we are starting to see what rex brought sparano in for. if the team can run the ball this effectively every week. and i dont mean 250 yards, i just mean moving the chains, giving us short 3rd downs, running the clock so our defense can rest, etc. if the jets can run effectively then every week becomes winnable. we can trust mark to manage the game for us and make the throws when they count. dont put the entire game on his shoulders, but let him make plays and we can beat any team in the nfl if our defense stays strong.
i dont think they changed up the scheme i still saw a lot of pulling, but i think a big change was ducasse was out there and playing well, and moore played well, brick had a great game, and howard is holding his own. the line is starting to gel out there it looks like, which means we can expect this team to be more consistent offensively.
Running the ball and stopping the run are just fundamental to winning in the NFL if you don't have a top 5 QB and the tools around him to dominate that way. Even then you better be able to run some and stop the other team when they're trying to setup favorable down and distance situations and control the clock in the process. What we saw yesterday was an opponent that could not stop the run and that did not have their #1 RB available. That turned into a big win for the Jets because it allowed them to control the game state from the early 2nd quarter on.
Does everyone just glaze over the fact that I specifically mention the Colts weaknesses playing a big part? I'm also not saying OMG the Jets are the bestest team evar - so I don't get the "relax" comments.
It's all context. The Matrix working it's wonders. Now if Rex can just figure out how to zap some black suits in on Brady next weekend we might have a shot there as well. Unfortunately the Pats can both run the ball and stop the run so it's likely to be an ugly loss.
The "run the rock down their throat and mix in the pass to keep them honest" is older than dirt & still used because it works, when it works. The problem with Jets was not so much poor design, but poor execution. Simply put -- not enough talent to win. It worked against Colts because our talent was > theirs. Now comes a bigger test against NE @ their place. IMO Jets had steadily improved over the past several weeks since both Revis & Holmes went down, so I'm hopeful that it won't be a blowout. Perhaps Jets won't win, but they shouldn't be beeaten badly.
Relax, it was the Colts We need to relax. It was the colts and they had some key guys hurt. Sanchez threw for 82 yards...82 FREAKING YARDS.
You say that like it's somehow relevant. There's nothing wrong with a QB running for only 82 yards when the RBs rush for 250+ yards. I still want to see us go back to the ridiculously aggressive blitzs from Rex's first year. I enjoyed watching QBs being super confused and scared of being hit.
