how our defense became so bad? talent wise its an improved defense with laron landry, yeremiah bell, and quinton coples. i know we lost revis, but even before we lost him we were garbage. rex losing the team? it doesnt add up at all
New players, new schemes, it may take a while for everyone to gel. We looked much better this week against a pretty good team.
They are not great, but they are not bad. Much of their failure can be blamed on the Jets offense. Yes, I said the Jets offense.
I can only trust what my eyes are seeing, the d-line isn't getting it done. No real pass rush and against the run they're getting pushed around, teams are opening up big running lanes. Once the opposing team's RB goes through the a hole untouched they're running full speed in the open field which makes them hard to tackle. Running plays to the outside, we're losing contain on both sides, allowing the RB to go around the corner or reverse for a big gain because we have no backside contain. We also seem unable to disengaged and get off our blocks to tackle the RB. The one on one battles are being lost on a consistent basis. In general, they lack speed and are getting over powered. In the 49ers game you could see our guys getting stood up straight or falling back on our heels. You can't make tackles in that position. I can't explain why they're not getting it done they just aren't. And this is over a number of games so it can't be explained away as a fluke. Maybe because we don't have anyone scary or dominate that forces them to have to double team.
Most defenses will break down sooner or later if the offense 3 and outs them to death. I thought the D played better during the Texans game but if the O keeps turning the ball over and the running game doesn't eat the clock, you're screwed. Run D was lacking at times. They got sucked into misdirection plays way too hard. Need linebackers to spy and ends to hold contain or you will be owned.
The reason the defense has gotten worse is the Jets have used 3 #1's in a row on that side without getting a star player out of it. Add on the fact that several players are aging out on the field, which is the worst place for that to happen. I like Wilkerson and Coples but it's pretty clear neither of them has taken the NFL by storm. Wilson has some talent but he's not a plus player. Somewhere in here the Jets need to actually find some stars because they're not winning a lot in this league without them. That's on both sides of the ball.
1. Safety spot has been weakness for some time, and wasn't addressed at all. 2. Same with OLB 3. Age caught up with the ILBs. 4. Jets are barely done replacing the DLs.
We've had the same slow ass LB's and they get exposed game after game when a RB gets to the edge or an athletic TE comes along. And our D line gets no push.
I don't think it's going to be super great up front whether we have our young guns in there or keep our old guys in, so letting the younger players play makes sense. The oldies just aren't getting it done, and the younger players show some of their inexperience when they are in there. I'd rather have that inexperience right now though than still struggle with the experience.
you're looking at the end result of multiple issues. 1 - Jets haven't really done well with recent drafts in the Rex era. This is one reason why Jets are really lacking depth in so many places. 2 - The AFCCG runs had a good defense but some of those players are now past their prime. Right now the LB core just isn't as good as the two playoff runs (even though it's the same players). The lack of speed is a killer when it comes to setting that edge. Which is why those speedy RB really tear up the Jets if they can get through the DL or run around them by getting to the sidelines faster than LB can close off that area. 3 - safety position was never great to begin with & although it's upgraded ... it's still not very good. This position could get a lot worst this season if Laundry get hurt (which has been a regular thing for him). 4 - Landry/Bell/Coples improvements are not big enough to overcome the weaknesses developing in other areas. 5 - The Offense has dropped by a lot & that puts even more pressure on the D also. There's the turnovers & 3 and outs which force the D to go back out there after short rests. === My opinion is that the Jets D isn't something hopeless & can be turned around with a good draft or two. But is Tanny capable of a good draft or two?? Really like Coples pick but it's too much to expect rookie to really change a team's performance. Next season the Jets DL will be looking really good & Coples will be @ year #2 which I think will be big improvement. Based on past drafts, I don't see Rex's Jets going OL, RB, TE if there's big holes defensively. So much of the D future hinges on DeMario & maybe McIntyre. They don't need to be dominant but if they can become decent starters then Jets can cover other holes in the early draft.
Because our pass rush has gotten worse each and every year. That's the main reason. Also, as others have stated, the LB's are aging, which plays into the pass rush. Yes, Landry and Bell are better versions of Leonhard and Smith, but neither can cover a TE either and our pass rush is non-existent. We have a DL full of run stoppers or ends/OLBs who seemingly can't get to the QB or it takes them 4-5+ seconds to do so. Not a winning formula. Oh, and our offense can't stay on the field and that will tire down any defense if they're on the field for 35 minutes a game.
agree - we were able to mask this in 09 and most of 10 using predominantly a base 3-4 while getting the most out of players like thomas/pace/scott. now 2 years later the evidence is such that the LB unit is not up to par so the jets try to go with a base 4-3 and what happens - still cannot generate a pass rush, LB are slow to the gaps, do not contain, and get eaten up on the perimeter IMO - we need to return to a base 3-4 AFTER we replenish the LB core this offseason. easier said than done.
In 09 we weren't the number 1 D all year even with Kris Jenkins playing like a monster. We got better as the season got along. Losing Revis hurts a lot but I still think our D will gel a bit more as the season goes. I think they played pretty well against the Texans.
our d-linemen are far better than our LBs yet we continue to run 3 down linemen sets a majority of the time
I agree. I think if we continue to play as a unit (and heavily avoid injuries!) we can become much more cohesive. My biggest gripe this year is that it is apparent that off-season conditioning, along with (it appears) not enough training in training camp, has been hindering our progress. I would like to see us being able to limit the run better this week against Indy. If we can do this, I think we can have greater success in containing Woodhead and Ridley when we face off against our most feared rival in a few weeks.
