http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/boxscore;_ylt=Ao3H0g7p9y5_oGJ1OljARz0dsLYF?gid=20051226020 The immortal Derrick Blaylock and Cedric Houston were our running backs that game lol. We did have Coles/Cotchery and Justin McCariens at receiver. Whoever the TE was didn't have a catch.
The Jets are down to back-ups at both WR spots, Tight end, & full back. What do you expect the starting O to look like? It's one thing to be negative...it's another to look for any reason you can to say woe is me & to appear that you are being tough with the front office. C'mon..this thread is RIDICULOUS.
I just think it's funny that, as terrible as we are on O so far, the idea behind this thread is to suggest that we have the worst MNF O lineup of any team since 1975....But in 2005, the NYJ had a decidedly worse O, and played not one, but two MNF games. So the answer is "No, this is not the worst MNF offensive lineup since 1975, it's just the worst NYJ offensive lineup since 2005. Yes, it is terrible. Thanks for playing."
I meant the worst Jets offense since 1975. And I believe that's the case. It's not just the draft position and inherent talent value of the players that is at issue here. It's where they are in their careers and what they are likely to accomplish on Monday night. Position by position: QB - Brooks Bollinger, Vinny Testaverde, Mark Sanchez The 2012 Jets get the win here. Mark Sanchez is one of the few positions on he field where they are better than what they put on the field in 2005. RB - Curtis Martin, Cedric Houston. Shonn Greene, Bilal Powell Greene and Powell are about the same right now as either of Martin at the end of his career or Houston at the beginning of the career he never had. There's nothing but bad running backs in the list above. You want to talk last year and the year before in terms of defending Greene? Well, Curtis Martin will take that talk and double-down on you and win in a landslide. The Jets RB's this year are pitiful. But they're not as pitiful as the WR's. WR - Laveranues Coles, Justin McCareins, Wayne Chrebet and Jerrico Cotchery would like to have a word with Jeremy Kerley, Chaz Schilens and company. This is the worst Jets WR group going on the field on Monday probably EVER. I can't think of a game where the Jets did not have a singled established starting caliber WR on the field and only a young slot guy to carry the load. Even the 1995 Jets had Wayne Chrebet who would catch 66 passes that year with nobody alongside him to help out. They had Adrian Murrell as a surehanded outlet for the QB under pressure. The overall talent on that team on the offensive side of the ball was maybe weaker than what the Jets have now but they didn't get to play on Monday night. TE - Chris Baker and Doug Jolley were better than Jeff Cumberland and whoever is going to have the #2 TE role on Monday. You don't want to see it because of the green glasses but the fact is that the skill players the Jets are putting on the field on Monday night are worse than what they put on the field in 2005 in either game. Among the skill players only Kerley looks to be even average at the role he is playing right now and many of the skill players look like bottom feeders. Ok, on to the line. LT - Jason Fabini, Adrian Jones, D'Brickashaw Ferguson. That's a current Jets win. It's too bad the Left tackle can't put points on the board by himself. LG - Matt Slauson, Pete Kendall, Jonathan Goodwin. Please. C - Kevin Mawae, Pete Kendall, Nick Mangold. Jet's win, see the LT comment above. RG - Brandon Moore, Brandon Moore. --- RT - Adrian Jones, Scott Gragg, Austin Howard. This one is a push. Nobody was or is playing well at RT. Howard benefits right now from the fact that he's not Wayne Hunter and that's a low threshold to beat. This Jets offense has less talent and less accomplishment than any Jets offense that has taken the field on a Monday night in decades. And for the people arguing injuries. We've had two injuries of any consequence on that side of the ball this season. That's the NFL for you. If you can't handle two non-QB injuries without having a unit fall off a cliff you've built a terrible unit.
The 2005 Jets got two MNF games because the 2004 Jets were a kick away from the AFC Championship Game and had been to the playoffs three of the previous four years. Nobody anticipated Chad missing the whole year and the rest of the team falling apart. I don't remember if Mawae played that late MNF game, I do remember him standing on the sidelines next to Vinny during the Atlanta MNF loss in October with the commentators lamenting that fact. The 1995 roster was very weak going into the season. People remember Wayne Chrebet now as a great Jet but he only got the chance because we had absolutely nobody at the position going into camp. The O-line was so bad that year that Kotite went with the infamous Everett McIver experiment at LT which lasted one game and nearly got Boomer Esiason killed. He also put a college QB named Vance Joseph at CB to try and cover Tim Brown in a nationally televised Sunday night home disaster vs Oakland. I have vague memories of the 1975-77 era and Lou Holtz, but that 1995 team was as bad a team as I can fully remember. They went 3-13, beating the expansion Jags in Week 3, the Dolphins without Marino 16-15 at home, and being the first team to lose to the expansion Panthers.
And the 1995 team didn't play on Monday night. You're right that Kendall started both games at C for the Jets. It doesn't matter though because that was edge 2012 Jets no matter what. The Cleveland Browns of the last several years have had Joe Thomas at LT and Alex Mack at C. Guess what? Having two great offensive linemen does not matter if the skill positions suck. I think that's where the Jets are now on offense. For whatever reason the franchise has allowed the talent on that side of the ball to slip below minimum competency once a couple of non-QB injuries occurred. This is the NFL. You need to have depth for a reason. It's not just about the few stars you put on the field. Those guys don't win anything unless they have a bunch of average to good players supporting them. Not even the elite QB's.
I would be shocked if the Jets even score one touchdown on Monday. It's going to be a three hour train wreck
If it's a train wreck it's going to be a turning point because having a train wreck on national TV is going to be too much for Woody to handle. At that point the season is going to go straight down the tubes, because changes will be made and the current alternatives are worse than what is on the field - even given that what is on the field is bad.
Ok, thanks for checking that. Yeah, unlike 2005, in 1995 we knew we were going to be awful pretty much from January when Hess stepped in to fire Pete Carroll and hire Rich Kotite. That's the spirit! You never know what happens in football, there are a lot of ways to score a TD. Maybe McKnight runs the opening kickoff back or we block a punt, that's why they play the games. I say we score at least one TD and it's a close game to the gun.
The WR's in that game were Laveranues Coles, Wayne Chrebet, Justin McCareins and rookie Jerrico Cotchery. It was a wipeout on the offensive side that year but it wasn't due to lack of talent at WR.
Talent wise, they were actually a step below the 1-15 Jets of next season. The 1996 Jets were a 4-12/5-11 team masquerading as a 1-15 team. The 1995 Jets were a 1-15 team that lucked out by winning 3 games
I don't understand the OP point is? The Jets O is bad, the O line seems to be under performing, but the worst MNF since 1975? That would be hard to answer accurately without a lot research and the the answer would be most likely unsatisfying. I don't understand what implications the OP wants us to make based on the round an O line member were selected. Based on the needs of teams in the draft, the strength of players at a particular position, and number of other factors can determine where a player will be drafted at. If you have an poorly performing O-line made mostly of 1sts, or 6ths, or UDFA, at the end day what does that really say? Good draft pick didn't play up to their potential, lower drafts are in themselves bad, UDFA??? Looking at both rosters they look like a similar mix of drafts which I wouldn't be surprised most teams are. From year to year even marque names performance and ability can change although most fans want players to be a known quantity based on the round they were drafted. If Sanchez was drafted later let's say 2nd round then would we be satisfied with his performance? Was Tebow a bust or was it a poor decision by the Bronco's drafting him that high?
Our FO has been exceptional at finding talent though they've not received due credit until last season. Kubiak & Smith inherited a monstrously mismanaged franchise. It took them awhile to straighten out. RE: The "injury bug". I can feel for you guys there. Seems as we played the entire season last year with the "Next Man Up" mantra. Believe me, I know how that song goes.
McCareins was never any good here, Cotchery back then was more of a special teams guy who finally got a chance and broke out the following year when Chad came back. I had forgotten we traded Santana Moss to bring Coles back before that season. WRs are the last guys in the food chain--if the line and QB aren't doing the job you're not getting the ball enough to make a big difference.
