Would benching Sanchez "ruin him"?

I know. It be like benching Greene for Powell to make a point.

Totally false and invalidates your whole post.

I'm going to reiterate my point that Sanchez was not developed correctly. We've had a revolving door at receiver, we never allowed him to make mistakes and learn from them, we obviously didn't teach him how to read defenses properly, we definitely didn't even let him call line adjustments (Schotty had Mangold doing that!), and we basically took a kid who was probably more of a Cutler/Favre and tried to make him into a Pennington/Manning.

You can't take square peg and fit it into a round hole.

Also, people have to realize that even if Woody cleans house and gets "football people" in here it doesn't mean it will guarantee success. Look at Oakland, for instance. Their GM who was regarded as a football guy has totally sent that team back to their old 4-5 win look. Also look at what Pioli has done with KC and that team has plenty of talent.

At the end of the day, you have to look at what we have right now and see what they can do to improve the situation that we're in currently. First and foremost we have to execute the fundamentals. That's the main problem. We looked great our first game because the execution was there, in the second game there was a regression of execution and it's carried on into the past few games.

Mark has to get through his reads quickly and not worry about his pressure, much like he did in the first game. His biggest problem is that while he is tough, he doesn't like getting hit (no QB does) but it forces him to make poor decisions. Sometimes he just needs to give up on a play and throw it out of bounds or get back to the line of scrimmage and take the sack. His problem is that he can play well, we've seen him play well, but he's not consistent. He needs to consistently execute. He's at his best when he anticipates his throws and leads the receiver and just think of how good he would be at that if he would have been given the keys to the offense since year one. Sadly, unless he digs deep down inside and realizes his career and reputation is on the line I'm not sure he'll be able to fix these simple fundamental flaws.

Our receivers aren't free of blame too. They're poor in their execution. I almost think it comes right back to the receiving coach. Every WR in the league outside of the Jets know they have to go for the ball and not wait for it to come to them. I've seen Roethlisberger throw so many passes that should be sure picks only for a receiver to go up and fight for the ball. It's basic football. SO you're not fighting for balls and then you're running poor routes and not getting separation yet you expect the QB to throw a perfect ball to you and on those rare occasions he throws THE perfect pass you drop 'em. If the fundamentals were there, we wouldn't have these problems and our offense would be able to move the damn ball like they did in week 1.

Run game is probably the part that pisses me off the most. Our line's execution has been shaky at best and even then they've opened some nice running lanes for Greene. Greene's problems don't come down to fundamentals, it comes down to the fact that he has no field vision. He should not be starting in this offense and I think he's more of a problem than Sanchez. Basically if we could even get the running game going with Powell starting the play action becomes effective again and it opens up the passing game. Niners at times were only sending 4 men fronts at the run and we couldn't gain big chunks.

Honestly, if we make a change at RB and people actually executed properly and consistently we'd be looking a lot better. We're just a really sloppy team with poor execution. It falls on the head coach, really. I love Rex but the offense really never executed well and it's carrying on into this year and now the defense is taking a dive while we actually added speed and youth. He needs to bench the underachievers (Sanchez too, if it comes down to it) and let the young guys take over on both sides, especially defense. No excuse for Coples and Davis not to be starting at this point.

Perfect post, I agree 100%. You actually understand football, many people on here do not. Football is a team sport and well our team isn't that talented and teams that aren't talented have to be on top of their execution, we've been extremely sloppy. If you're low on talent and your players aren't going out there and nailing the fundamentals, you're going to have a bad time. The ship can still be corrected but it's going to take a hell of an effort.

Pointing out our lack of talent doesn't mean you understand football.

Yes we have a lack of talent and thats not Marks fault.

But even when we had a ton of talent Mark was always near the bottom of NFL QBs. We had an amazing defense and awsome running game and still our passing game was feeble. Heck we even had to dumb down or passing game for him.

And somehow the excuse "we did not develop him well" means he should not be benched.

Mark has been ruined as Tanny has already ruined the offense. Garbage RB's, no WR threats at all. Ground n pound my arse! Mark will get sent packing for like a 5th. round pick this coming offseason, and will wind up being a decent QB elsewhere. The guy has zero weapons to go to and this is all Tannys fault.

Br4. Well said indeed. We are left with no choice. Moving him out is the worst of two evils. He is a weaker link but one amongst many. Unfortunately the FO mortagaged our future, our capability to stock pile sufficient young talent that can be moved into key roles next year as a normal progression to improve the team.
Instead we essentially have zero depth, and a core that in many positions is inadequate to do the job come next year. Combine that with limited cap room and it spells piss poor leadership and trouble for this team.
I said this many, many times, unless you are a SB caliber team, you should build through the draft and not free agency. Free agency works when you have a strong nucleus and need just one or two to take you over the top.

I'm not being a jerk here, this is a genuine question: can you explain why this is to me?

From my point of view benching Sanchez would likely be the best thing for him. Let me explain. First, it will test his mental state and competitiveness. If he is a true competitor he will wait, support the team, bide his time, and come back like a lion. He will also use the time to study and refine his skills from the sideline--a luxury many great QBs have had in their development but he has not. If he is truly fragile and sitting him does ruin him then so what? I feel bad for the guy but really being an NFL QB in NY is not for you if you're thin skinned.

Second, as I mentioned before, sitting will give him time to study. Some people learn under fire, others are more cerebral. No one way is better and no one approach is superior. Rather, the approach to developing a player should be customized to the attributes of the player. So if Sanchez needs to sit to develop, and he hasn't developed because he has been playing and getting pummeled, then let him sit. Sometimes it just takes time for systems to sink in. Again, if this doesn't work then what have you lost?

Third, sitting Sanchez puts Tebow on the chopping block. It becomes put up of shut up time for Tebow. If he performs then great. If he flubs he is gone. If he is mediocre then let him and Sanchez battle it out next year and let the best man take it.

I am sure there is more, but you get the gist. I just don't see much downside to sitting Sanchez any longer. So why argue against it?

    1. 2009 he was a rookie. 2010 he had a significant jump in his play and was a key to our success during that year. I won't even say he flat out sucked last year because he accounted for 32 touchdowns alone, and that was with a less talented cast. I'm not a Sanchez defender at all, but I'm realistic.

    2. I never said we shouldn't bench him because he was developed wrong. He deserves to be benched because he's playing bad which is a product of his development.

If benching Sanchez would ruin him, then he is weak and not NFL QB material. Look at Kolb in Arizona. Got benched for Vick. Got benched for Skelton. Yet, he is not ruined and was ready to go when they called him up. I've been really impressed with his mental toughness, because everybody, including me was laughing at him and saying he sucked last year. Now, he may have claimed his job back due to performance. Maybe benching him was good for him.

if I or anybody on this forum got to start at qb for any team in the nfl, we could all do as good as sanchez as far as completion percentage.

anybody can be 32 of 32. dead last. look at the stats.

sanchez gets paid 8 million+ to be last......
how would benching him, ruin him.

playing him is gonna ruin rex's career. and i like rex.

Oh, I think you're missing my point. I'm not arguing against it. I just think it would ruin him for the Jets. But it's my opinion that he's pretty much already ruined, so what difference does it make? At least this way we can shatter the illusion.

But I don't think it's likely that he'd take the benching and improve and come back like a lion. As a first or second year player, maybe. But as an established vet that just signed a massive contract extension, if he gets benched, I think his relationship with the Jets is pretty much done. At that point, he knows the team is not behind him. He'll request a trade and we'll try to oblige.

If McElroy is active on Monday, we will know all we need to know about his security on this team.

Arizona bounces back and forth. If one isn't getting the job done, they aren't getting the job done. It really is as simple as that.

Kolb was hurt so Skeleton came in. Then Skeleton got hurt and Kolb came in. Different scenario.

Not really. Skelton took his job *first* then got hurt and Kolb replaced him. So the initial replacement was not injury related. It did not "ruin" Kolb.
