Well, that's one way to deal with Assad. Have the Turks come over his northern border in force and destroy his last safe havens.

Very little risk of wider regional war in that scenario since the Turks are not at loggerheads with either the Iranians or Iraqi Shiites and are also very anti-Israel but in a Cold War type way.

On the other hand, the Pakistanis were the UN/US proxy in Somalia and that turned into hell for us.

Not good, dunno what to say, but we need to get out of Iraq and Afghanistan. It's just a nightmare. This gets a whole lot worse if Iran backs Syria...

obama has promised to get us out of afghanistan, probably because he wants to deploy troops into other parts of southwest asia. this whole situation is fucked though. really scary if only because of the instability in the region. could turn into something big. not gonna call it wwIII or anything, but it could be much bigger than just turkey and syria.

I'd be shocked if the mortar fire was not by the rebels, seeking to draw a military into the equation.

    It the most logical scenario.

and Turkey has already gamed that out, And figures the incoming government is far more pliable to becoming either an ally or a client state.

Turkey has hegemonic aspirations, and between Turkey and Iran, Syria is the lynchpin....

Actually, Turkey is cooperating with the CIA and MI6 to secretly support and arm the Syrian Rebels. However, it could've been either the Rebels or the Gov't.

I'm thinking Turkey doesn't want its own Kurdish people to rise up...They want this Syria thing to end ASAP before that conflict really moves to Turkey where the Kurds start to flare up...

Also, an ally in Syria is a good theory as well...This is natural because both countries have Sunni Muslims as their largest population...

Well this gets a whole lot worse when you factor in the Syrians shooting down a Turksih fighter jet a few months ago and documents coming out recently that it was Russia advising Assad what to do. The pilots apparently were recovered alive and not seen again.

Word of advice... if you're American get the fuck out of the area.

I love the idea of Turkey and Iran battling to be the hegemon of Asia Minor and the Persian Plateau. Nobody else is going to listen the them because they're Turks and Persians but it will keep them occupied and stop more effective mischief.

I should qualify this by saying I love the idea as long as we and the Russians are not behind it. Let the middle east cause it's own problems and deal with them for a change. The costs of meddling are really high.

I blame Henry Kissinger. It's always his fault when something put in place in the 70's breaks down. Good old Hank.
