He may not have been the best, but my favorite was Freeman McNeil. For the record, I'd take Al Toon over Maynard, and Klecko over Gastineau any day of the week. That said ... The best player in Jets history is Revis. Nobody we've had has ever played their position to the level he plays his.
i loved one eyed Wesley. Chrebet was very admirable. but the best has to go to Joe for delivering big on a drunken guarantee, huge balls.
If you only mean dominating their position and not just popularity, I would have to say Revis, but Gastineau would be second no doubt.
3 scenarios: IMO, the most dominating player was Joe Klecko, what he accomplished making the pro-bowl at 3 different positions was pretty remarkable. I won't put current players on my list but Revis has to be in the conversation. 1 year player...Ronnie Lott......IMO, best player ever in a Jet uniform......just shouldn't be considered.
I don't think you can really answer this questions. Different positions, different generations. Personally I go with Martin, he was part of the reason I became a fan in 1998. I would be willing to argue with anyone that he is the most underrated back of all time.
Didn't get to see the Namath era. Best Jet I've ever seen was easily Klecko. Dominant defensive player who could bring a pass rush & stuff the run. He was even game-changing at NT. Gastineau will always get more shine than Klecko because he was flashier on & off the field but Klecko was the better lineman. If Revis can play at the same level for a few more seasons then I'd put him above Klecko. Ronnie Lott & Favre wore Jet uniforms but their Jet careers were too short for this conversation. === Jet player who I think could've had a much brighter career if he landed elsewhere is Al Toon. Was a solid player for Gang Green but he picked up so many concussions from a QB constantly leading him into defenders.
Revis will go down as the GOAT corner so it will be Darrelle. Too bad we are wasting his legendary career with shit talent.
Curtis Martin #28 Klecko, Revis, Broadway, Chrebet and a fellow named Winston Hill are somewhere behind that. The next tier has names like Lyons, Philbin, Snell, Byrd, Maynard, Mo Lewis, Boozer, Toon, Walker, McNeil, Marvin Jones, and Kyle Clifton, etc.
Biggest impact or best at their position. Namath probably biggest impact but I wouldn't put him top 5 at his position. Gastineau, Toon, Revis, Kleck of course, Curtis.
Klecko had the highest impact of any player the Jets have had since Namath. Like Namath he was hurt a lot and so that impact was muted other than a few great seasons. If the Jets don't win Super Bowl III Joe Namath does not make the Hall of Fame and we probably consider him to be the second or third best *QB* in Jet's history at this point. That Super Bowl win made his legend. Darrelle Revis is probably the greatest talent the Jets have had but he's a cornerback and so at this point he's down the list some of players with highest impact on the Jets chances. For all the talk about his impact on the team the facts are that Darrelle Revis has started 85 games for the Jets since he was drafted, including the playoffs, and the Jets are 43-42 in those 85 games. There have been 5 games where Revis hasn't started in that span and the Jets are 3-2, which is a statistically insignificant difference. My list of actual value by player since I've been watching (1970-71) would go something like this: 1. Curtis Martin. 2. Joe Klecko 3. Mo Lewis 4. Darrelle Revis 5. Freeman McNeil If you go by AV, which is what Pro Football Reference uses, there is one player in NY Jets history who stands like a goliath over everybody in the standings for greatest player in Jets history. Here's the top 5 Jets all time by AV where the player played the majority of his career with the Jets: 1. Larry Grantham - 145 2. Don Maynard - 131 3. Curtis Martin - 128 (90 with the Jets) 4. Mo Lewis - 117 5. Joe Namath - 116 (113 with the Jets)
