if a player goes to the ground and remains there without attempting to get back up and run then yes the play is dead.
Is it so hard to lay on the ground and just keep the ball? between Epps and Holmes you would think Sparano has them practng tossing the ball in the air to signal the sidelines they are injured .
I don't think that is what the rulebook says. It says he is down when the runner declares himself down by sliding feet first on the ground. It doesn't say that any runner that falls down and doesn't attempt to get back up is considered down. Do you really think Holmes was giving himself up? Really?
The Epps play was understandable, he got his knee driven into helmet first. I wish he could have held onto to the ball but it's understandable why he would fumble in that situation. Like I said before the Holmes play was a blown call by the refs. Instead of ruling the play dead they ruled it a fumble. look at the Cruz play from last season. 32 second mark. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJjKWXPzILE
they ruled that Cruz was down and he never slid feet first. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJjKWXPzILE
If you honestly believe that Holmes was giving himself up, by the definition of the rule, instead of falling down because of an injury, I don't think I can convince you otherwise. You are really bending the interpretation of the rule to fit your team.
Will you admit that "giving yourself up" and "falling down because of an injury" are different things?
Nope I'm not bending anything. The offensive player can rule himself down without being touched or "sliding feet first". Hlolmes went down and did not attempt to make a football play so the play should have been automatically whistled dead. The refs blew the call.
Okay they are two different things. So now that that's out the way. Whether he fell because of injury or "giving himself up" it doesn't change the fact that the refs blew the call.
The Cruz call was a very controversial call. It doesn't set any precedence. It was a blown call. Holmes is a fucking moron. Nobody throws the ball away like he did. They usually just lay on the floor with the ball in the hand until they are touched or the whistle blows. Sure, he got hurt on the play, but it wasn't like somebody knocked his legs out with a "Landry Esque" tackle. He should have been more aware of the game. You don't ever let go off the football intentionally. Like Rex said, Jets got their fucking asses kicked...and rightfully so. They played like a garbage team that couldn't block for the QB, couldn't create holes for the run game, couldn't make good throws, couldn't stop the damn run, and never got to challenge 49ers to take advantage of their poor secondary, even though Kyle Wilson looks like total trash out there.
I'm reading the rule book. Are you making your ruling up? I saw an receiver push a DB to the ground while the pass was in the air. It wasn't called a penalty. Is that legal now? Just because it was called sometime, somewhere does not make it the rule. Again I ask, where are you getting your rule?
I posted the Cruz play to give an example. Here is another example go to the 1:51 mark of this video. Eli got down (knees touching the ground, just like Holmes knees hit the ground with no one around him) thus the play was dead. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHn5wb82F3Q
OK. You're going with "I saw it ruled in a game once so it must be the rule". I thought we were talking about actual rules that are in the rule book.
Nope you ever see when QB's take a knee at the end of games? I'm not making anything up. If anything Holmes shouldn't have just thrown the ball up, but I assumed he did that because he thought the play was dead. I bet had he known he probably would have just held the ball.
"Rule 7, Section 2, Article 1 states that the ball is dead and the down ended once a runner declares himself down by falling to the ground, or kneeling, and making no effort to advance" like I said the refs blew the call, end of discussion.
I don't know about a loser, but us losing Holmes is hardly a catastrophe. He was perhaps the most fraudulent "#1 receiver" in football. Is he the Jets' best offensive player? Maybe...which is just testament to how incredibly lacking in talent the Jets are. Losing Revis hurt, a lot. He was a legitimately excellent player. Holmes is still living off a years-old repuation. He's not a play-maker anymore. The Steelers got out of the Holmes Show just before he fell off the cliff, skills-wise...perhaps they knew what they were doing. This season is going to be a catastrophe, but losing Holmes really doesn't change a whole lot.
When does Ocho ever complain? He gets such a bad wrap and he doesn't even do anything wrong, he just showboats when he scores TDs We should have signed Ocho in the offseason, he's better than Schillens every day of the week
