Why do you think there will be more blitzing? Do you mean crazy/all out blitzes, or blitzing in general? I wouldn't feel comfortable all out blitzing. Lots of zone, sending random guys. Going to have to overhaul the D in a week
There's a chance we can win, but i don't like our chances. Revis is dominant defensive player who shuts down sides of a football field, that's huge. The Jenks injuries were big but he was a Run stopper and the guy who replaced him was a pretty damn good run stopper as well, who do we have replacing Revis ? Lankster and Wilson. Doesn't look good.
Valid point in that Piouha and Devito really stepped up in both years that Jenks went down, and while they didn't cause the disruption Jenks did, they were more than serviceable. However, Lankster and Wilson are not replacing Revis. Cromartie is replacing Revis. Wilson is replacing Cromartie, and not sure yet who is replacing Wilson in the nickel package, which is where we will most likely suffer most. So you have to ask yourself if that ladder climbing is significantly worse than the replacing of Jenks with Piouha and Devito.
Can't compare the value of a corner, no matter how divine they may be in Revis Christ, to a quarterback, particularly elite quarterbacks such as the one's you mention above, who are far more responsible for the outcomes of the game than any one corner given the fact that they have the ball in their hands so much and consistently have to make crucial decisions that at any point can shift the balance of the game. Quarterbacks have far more opportunities to put points on the board than a corner has to put points on the board or take them away.
I agree with you here. Although it doesn't have to be the Dbacks who step up. But SOMEONE has to step up. Whether it is Sanchez by putting more points on the board, the DLine putting more consistent pressure on the cornerback to eliminate the need for a shut down corner, or Ryan and the coaches scheming their way out of our deficiencies. Now if they all step up, that's how we can not only survive, but may I dare say it even excel without Revis. I'm saying here that perhaps losing Revis may motivate those pieces to play better/harder etc., which may have a positive effect in the long run. Long shot of course, but possible.
I am not overly optimistic either. But I'm not entirely pessimistic as those who say the season is over. Are we going to win the superbowl? Probably not. But we can still play good enough to make it to the playoffs, especially with the AFC looking wide open. And once you get in, anything can happen. Losing one player does not cost your whole season unless it's your quarterback. Even then, as I said in the original post, look how the Pats played to 11-5 and almost made the playoffs the year Brady went down with an ACL. When he went down in game one, who would've thought they could have played to that record with Matt Cassel? Can't emotionally overreact to losing Revis.
The Jets won't just roll over and die. They also have many strengths. Revis isn't the only strength, just the best of them.
We werent going to be great this season WITH revis. likely a 8-9 win team 1) Kris jenkins is great but its easier to replace that position the CB. furthermore, we never based our defense and schemes around jenkins, nor were we relying on his health. 2) Suggs is great, but the ravens have elite talent other then him. ngata, reed, and lewis are all top 5 or 10 at their position. We dont have another elite player. the ravens also didnt base their entire scheme and defense around suggs. they also HAVE seen a dip in performance without him. 3) Other teams dont have revis, they also dont rely on him. we did. Other teams have things like a great pass rush, great linebackers, etc. we dont have that sort of thing. its a poor comparison. As an example, Not everyone has Peyton Manning, it didnt mean the colts could win without him last year. As mentioned, we werent a playoff lock with Revis. anyone predicting 9-10 wins now is being extremely optomistic, given the road ahead
were we conservative? we blitzed a ton against miami, and often against pittsburg. we didnt much against buffallo, but i think that was more matchup as fitz tries to get rid of it quickly. our overload blitzes and sending extra guys has not been effective. going back to last season. im not sure that is the anwser, as blitzes getting picked up + worse coverage is a bad combo. id liek to see mroe 4 man lines and straight 4 man rushes on third down.
Sure we have a chance. But we lost our only true Hall of Fame player since Martin. So I am forced to say we are right back to.... The same old Jets, we have way to many holes on this team. Rex had Revis doing way too much this last game. It was like he was playing safety and OLB too. No wonder he got hurt.
The other untalked about factor of having Revis around is his influence on the other players around him. Its been said that Revis sort of took Wilson and the other young DB's under his wing and showed them his regimen and technique. The one thing we can count on for life without Darrell Revis on the field is his influence off of it. I'm sure Wilson has learned alot about covering #1's from Revis. I'm sure Wilson and others will continue to get advice as the season goes along. We all know a huge part of Revis game was mental. Lets see how that can influence the guys still on the field.
H'mm when a CB is the very best player on the team that says a awful lot of the skills of the GM & HC in evulating players that are need to restock the team every year
 It never gets old for you, does it? When you draft a CB that becomes one of the best players to ever play the position, it says an awful lot about the GM & HC evaluating the players.
You are very mistaken. Leon Washington led the NFL in all purpose yards in 2008. Jenkins (I'm almost positive) was second in the NFL in DPOY voting. We lost both of them the following season (wow, how the hell did we survive?). Then lost Washington to FA and Jenkins again the following season. The comparison is not as far off as you seem to think. We lost TWO huge players. This is just one, even if it is Revis.
either you are going way out on a limb to make yourself feel better about the overall situation, or you don't know much about football. Revis's effect was far, far greater than covering one player. that one player is normally the resposibility of two defenders, not one, in zone defenses, or even most man coverages when the safety helps out. WIth revis, you have ten players, not nine, to play against the rest of the opponent's offense. Revis also was a great tackler for a cb, so he helped a great deal in the running game. Revis also was tied for first last year in interceptions, that despite having a significantly lower rate of attempts thrown his way. In short I can't respect the point of view of anyone who says all he did was take out one player. EVen if that were true, that one player is usually the most feared skill player on the other side of the ball, but that still greatly understates Revis's value and importance.
The defense could have been stocked with Pro Bowl players and Revis still would have been the best player on the team.
If we had an offense to write home about, I might be a little less queasy about the future. If we had a real QB, I might even retain a little optimism. But....
