You have to be careful, because there's a chance the Eagles might lose this weekend so then they wouldn't be a good team to root for. Your best bet is to scan all the teams with a 2-0 record on Sunday, and become a fan of whichever one has the biggest lead at halftime. That way you're almost sure you'll be rooting for the proper team. You have to be smart about this. But to be 100% sure, you should wait to see who wins the Super Bowl and then you can buy all their gear
Technically we are contending right now. We are in 1st in the AFC east and if the playoffs started right now, we'd be in as the division champs and Pittsburgh wouldn't make it. How about them apples? Obviously there is much more football to play. Anybody can contend. The Saints are one of the few 0-2 teams. Are they being ruled out yet? Nope.

If Rex is the master of coaching up the DLs and LBs like he says he is, then I have no fucking idea why Jets are not active with UDFA LBs as much. Jets need fresh blood there even as we speak.
We're no way as good as we played the first game, and not as bad as we played in the second game. What holds this team back is it's offense, and the ryan decision to sit on the ball at the end of the first half down by 3 pretty much says all that needs to be said about the confidence in the teams offense. If the defense plays lights out the team is a 11-5 or 12-4 team, but realistically this is an 8-8 team, plus or minus a game.
Get into the tournament anything can happen. We've already seen this regime win 4 times on the road in the playoffs. I trust RR gameplanning in the playoffs. We can't get so down on this team after losses.
Frankly, though, I am inclined to believe that the problem lies deeper than the quality of the roster. I am looking at two areas. Jets scouting hasn't been quite the strong point of the organization. Couple that with T-Bomb's penchant to trade the picks away. You have depleting roster consequently. What's worse is the coaching department. Take the defensive side, the pride of Ryan. Their tackling has regressed so thoroughly that it's not even funny to watch them miss tackles on a regular basis. AND they are slow. Compare that with 49ers defense. They are young, hungry, fast AND disciplined. They do not miss tackle. They don't even do that many complicated and exotic stuff either. If they need to bring pressure, they bring the heat with double A-gap stuff (Willis fires in and takes the C, then Bowman takes off in a delayed blitz - just an example.) Sure, Justin Smith is playing his minds out for some time, but that does not explain why their safeties are not missing tackles or CBs are not blowing coverages. It's even funnier on the offense; Jets OL do not create anything with half semblance of a running corridor. I do feel Jets can do better than Greene, but on the other hand, I feel sorry for that young man. He runs right at human wall, at 100mph every down. He will not last his contract playing in that mess. Realistically if about a half dozen things all break the right way the Jets could contend for a Super Bowl this year. That said, very few teams get lucky like that and so the jets are probably going to go 3-3 on the breaks and 8-8 on the year. In terms of where the Jets are in building a Super Bowl team they are likely at least two years out. They need to replace both guards and both outside linebackers. They need to develop two WR's on the roster already. They need to find better RB's. They'll probably need to replace the safeties again within a year. We haven't even talked about whether or not Howard is real, Sanchez can survive the mess and Revis stays with the Jets.
If Jets decide to stay with Harris, then provided Davis pans out as an ILB, THEN Jets are 2 OLBs away. Since Harris is slow, he will have to take the role of Ted, which I have doubt about. All in all, slow LB is the very root of all evil. Or, since Jets have 4 capable DLs, (Wilk/Coples/Ellis/Pouha) with enough bodies to rotate, it would be a better idea to just go 4-3, or 4-2-5 even. All in all, Jets need THREE LBs at the very minimum. (Count that - that's 3 bodies.) Now, Jets also need 3 starter-quality bodies at OL as well, AND RB. That would put the body count at seven. This means Jets have to hit it over the park from the top three rounds for two years AND pick up one impact free agent to make it realistically two years away. (That is, without counting the bodies at safeties.) Simply put, I do not see it that optimistically. I would think, with other spots that need depth, Jets are at least 3-4 years away from contending for the big one - provided the coaching does the job, and the scouting does the job - and I have no confidence that either will hold their end of the bargain.
If we're sitting around waiting for perfection so the Jets can make the Superbowl we have got a very long wait. No team in the NFL is perfect or even near perfect. Last year the Giants went 9-7 and were dead last in the NFL in rushing, and they were 25th in total defense, letting up an average 25 points per game. The Pats made it to the Superbowl and were 31st in passing yards allowed (an average 293 yards per game). No team is perfect and the Jets certainly aren't. It all comes down to player utilization, game planning, and basically good old fashioned COACHING. With parity being the way it is in the NFL it all comes down to what you can make with the limited ingredients you've got. The margin between being a Superbowl team and a 7-9 club is razor thin these days.
Do you mean contending as in repeatedly making the playoffs? Then pieces away. Do you mean having a chance to make the playoffs year in and year out, then they are there now.
You may think that but the Cards are 9-2 last 11 games. They have beaten the Seahawks, Cowboys, 49ers and now the Pats.
