Realistically, how far away are we from contending?

I think the Pittsburgh game proved that the Jets are in no way, shape or form a Super Bowl contender this year - let alone playoff one - and that we have a ways to go until we reach that stage.

The WR, RB, OLB, OL and QB situation will continue to hold us back until we either a) improve those areas internally, or b) seek out external solutions via the draft or FA. Tannenbaum fucked us over with his awful contracts to Holmes and other players, so the latter of those two is likely out for the immediate timeframe. It seems as if we will need to continue to rebuild with the draft, but even then, it takes time to develop even the best of prospects.

So realistically, how far do you think we are from contending? I give it at least two years at this point, since it's only by then that we will have the cap flexibility and depth of talent necessary to compete.

In 2010 we lost the opener to the Ravens. Our offense looked awful.
In 2009 we were 4-7 losing to bad teams like the Phins and the Jaguars.

Its 1 game we have no idea what this team will be like in January.

We are as close as the other 19 teams at 1-1 this morning (which is an NFL record btw).

Realistically, I feel like we are 3 years away. The reason is I think that this whole team will need to be rebooted within the next year or so. So many guys will not be here in 2 years...Scott, Pace, Thomas, Greene, Brandon Moore and other aging, overpaid vets.

We have no depth thanks to Tannenbaum constantly dealing away mid-round picks. We have no clear answer at QB or RB and a coach that is sure to be on the hot seat with another disappointing season..

What are you going to say if the Jets beat Miami this weekend? Can't teams have bad games?

Last time I checked, the Patriots just lost to the Cardinals. Did they change the result of that game?

I'm pretty sure the Cards are way worse than the Steelers....but I'm sure you think the Pats are a contender.

2 years ago the packers had to play a win to get in game week 17.

last year the giants had the same deal.

but of course a road lose in week 2 seals the fate of the entire season and there is absolutely no way a team can contend after that.

The Pats will be bounce back because they are basically returning the same team from last year, except with Brandon Lloyd and an improved defense. On top of that, they have arguably the best coach of all-time and Tom Brady, who just flat-out knows how to win. The Pats will undoubtedly win the AFCE once again and are likely to return to the Super Bowl as well.

The Jets are an absolute mess at at least 4 positions, in a league where parity is at an all-time high. They want to run a ground-and-pound style of offense despite having an awful run game and defense that can't even tackle properly or get off the field on a consistent basis.

On top of all of that, we have no depth, thanks to Tannenbaum trading away mid-round picks thanks to being pressured into win-now mode by an owner who cares more about backpages than championships. Granted things can certainly change, but at the moment, I'm with BradwaySux in that I truly believe this team is 8-8 at best this year.

The Jets lost to the Steelers on the road. Get over it people. A lot of good teams would lose to the Steelers on the road. It's amazing how many people think the season is over.

    It's fucking week 3 now.

Look at this fucking genius post. Yeah that's exactly what the game proved, LOL.

Game 1 proved we are winning the super bowl. Game 2 proved we can't compete. I wonder what game 3 will prove? Keep it up sport

What the hell is wrong with Jets fans it is a long season. I feel the exact opposite the Jets have proved they are contenders. The season breaks down in Quarters we come out on top the first four games we are right where we want to be.

The young players have some growing up to d (Shocking). To lose on the road to the steelers is not the end of the world. The team has to get better and it will.

Come on the Patriots lost to the Cardinals Peyton threw three picks yesterday that looked just awful. The Cowboys beat the Giants lose to the Seahawks the 49ers are really the only team that has looked that impressive and maybe the Texans. It is a long season and the signs are good Sanchez looks better Hill was good week 1 bad week 2 (Shocking also I know). The line looks like it will be fine this season and the defense will get it together.

The Jets did not get blown out against the Steelers they just did not make the critical play a t the critical time. Fumbled punts, drop passes, missed passes. They all happened at critical times in one of the toughest places to play in the NFL.

The Jets get blown out by Miami next week then I will be worried but rt now we are 1-1 with a division win and hopefully 2-1 after this weekend the sky is not falling quite yet.

The. Jets. Lost. To. A. Good. Team. On. The. Road.

Let's revisit this question around mid season.

I think it's very possible that the team could make the playoffs with the softer schedule coming up after Week 8, but the question is what happens after that? What the Jets showed us the other day is that they can't beat a weakened Steelers team, and that is not a very good sign. It seems like every time this team is challenged to prove themselves against a decent team they fail. At least that's what they did last year and it seems to be flowing over into this year too.

The Jets can't just pad their record with soft wins over soft teams, they have to beat the teams on their schedule who could be contenders in the playoffs. They don't need to do this for us, they need to do it for themselves, because if they don't they won't have the confidence they need to face these better clubs when the time comes.

Don't hand us wins over Buffalo and Miami then hand us losses to Pittsburgh, San Fran, and the Patriots. I'ld actually feel better if they lost to Buffalo and beat Pittsburgh right now, at least that would mean something.

I'll say this, the Jets not only lost to a good team on the road they got their butts straight handed to them to a good team on the road... They were NONCOMPETITIVE to a weakened good team on the road.

That's the problem, not that they lost but that they put up absolutely no fight, absolutely pussed out at the end of the first half, and folded up their tents and left the stadium the minute the second half started. This kind of wimpish behavior should not be tolerated by the owner or the fans. Woody should reading the riot act to this coaching staff right now for this. Wimping out is not in the playbook... You do not wimp out; PERIOD. EVER.

A weakened Jets side couldn't beat a weakened Steelers side on a very tough road environment. Not overly worried. I was hoping the Jets could pull this off, but when I found out just who was out for this game I had a bad feeling, despite my hope. Losing to the Dolphins would cause me to worry much more than I do now.

Believe me Miami is watching that game film. The Jets better be ready for a fight next sunday because the Dolphins must be feeling pretty confident right now.

Buffalo won this past weekend did they not they are not as bad as the Jets made them look. You would rather lose to a division rival than the Steelers do you understand how the playoffs work?

The Jets lost to the Steelers on the road. I thought the Steelers were down also but I would not count it. They lost to Denver in Denver week one that is a big time advantage to Denver.

What this shows is how important home field advantage is. It is tough to win on the road in the NFL. Not a big deal losing the to the Steelers.

The question can we get things fixed. The Steelers showed you bump are receivers they struggle we need to fix that ASAP because everyone in the league will follow that plan. (a copy cat league)

Cro giving up that TD or just missing that Sack those are the plays that win or lose a tough game. Cro makes that play (or sack) no Kerly fumble the Jets just may win that game.

For how good the play calling was in Buffalo the second half was suspect. On a critical drive we run the wildcat to some success then do a toss sweep lose six yards (ask Sanchez to bail you out) that is a drive killer against a defense like the Steelers at a very critical time.

My point is a couple key plays go our way we have a chance in that game no doom and gloom. We showed we could play with a beat the steelers. There is a fine line between winning and losing in the NFL. The Steelers made the big play the Jets did not.

Nothing to hang are heads about lets get ready for the Dolphins. In case you didn't notice they just beat up on the raiders. I think Rex will have a few tricks for the rookie.

Miami is 1/3 Jets fans anyway so its not the environment that Pitt is at all. The only thing I'm worried about is our offense. Have to catch the ball and we need Hill to have a good game again. Their corners stink again with vontae Davis getting traded. Sparano should know how to exploit their personnel.
