The highlight of Greene's career were his highlight films from Iowa. He is by far the most over-rated RB in the league. His NFL career is a bust. He can't run...he can't block...he doesn't have vision.
When we figure out why we have Greene taking a hand off from the wildcat and proceeding to rush to the edge I'll let ya know!
Although this obviously isn't something to base much off of, but I think its somewhat telling that when you type in "Shonn Greene Highlights" in youtube, there isn't a single video from his NFL career (well there is ONE video that is 2 minutes long and with LT and Greene). Just imagine a RB thats above average in this offense... Its a nice thought. It would probably mask a lot of problems on offense. I mean theres a good amount of backup RB's out their that would easily upgrade this offense... Sadly.
Agreed with the Powell. Don't understand why he didn't get more looks in the Steelers game with Greene highly ineffective. Greene is just terrible. I gave him the benefit of the doubt last year - the line was horrendous, after all, and he seemed to come on at the end of the year. But, he's just not a good rb - way too, slow, horrendous vision, no moves - when Bilal Powell made that spin move, it was the first by a Jets rb since Leon Washington.
Greene is plenty fast enough. Just watch his playoff run against San Diego where the only guys around the endzone are DBs. Greene has vision at the second level but appears to have trouble behind the line. Guys like Curtis Martin and Thomas Jones had great vision behind the line, and usually always found a hole. But all they could muster was 4 yards. Greene it seems to me is being taught to be a Martin or Jones but he doesn't get to the line quick enough. I think there is still hope for him, but another back may not be a bad move at this point. I certainly don't want to see Greene signed to a huge deal. But we need him around.
I'm not a big Greene fan but he's not one of the worst backs in the league like some are stating. He sucks at receiving and is below average pass blocker. Doesn't show good vision & doesn't break tackles or make defenders miss. However, he's got the ability to pound the ball without fumbling. He's one of those RB that can actually wear down a D by the ending of the game. Greene will take whatever the OL can create and if they get him into the secondary then he can smash secondary players. He'd be a good backup or rotation back with a very good OL (like what the Jets had when Rex initially took over).
Greene is one more example of why we need a personnel guru as our GM and not a capologist. The reason Greene has the full throated support of the front office is because he's...wait for it....CHEAP!!! In his fourth year he's making $615,000. The guy's in a contract year, and for someone who's supposedly our featured back no one has heard a peep from anyone about re-signing him. He's most likely gone next year because we have a team that wants to center an offense around the running game lead by a GM who doesn't believe in paying running backs (Leon for McKnight draft move was all about money). Probably also explains why we didn't address it in free agency - Benson (who looks good by the way) got $825,000 from Green Bay, which is a paltry sum for a #1 back but apparently still too rich for this FO.
This might be true, who knows. But Leon also had a metal rod stuck into his leg if I remember correctly. I didn't mind getting value off a player who had a season ending leg injury.
We dumped Jones over contract issues too. You can argue whether those moves made sense or not, or you can argue whether running backs are worth $4-5 million a year to the average team, but considering we're trying to be the '70's Steel Curtain revival a top back SHOULD be worth more to us than a Green Bay or a New Orleans.
i actually thought the running game was fairly effective on Sunday, especially considering that we were facing what is easily one of the best run defenses in the NFL. I think Greene's biggest issue is his lack of established durability - the guy just gets banged up way too much.
Jets overall gained 90 yards on 22 carries which is ~4.09 yds/carry - i think that's pretty descent...
what would it take to trade for a talented RB? By talented I don't exactly mean Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson, etc, but someone who can actually run fast and outside and be better than greene. (for example, demarco murray)
I think he broke one long run, got called back for a mulligan holding call. What happen to the back we saw in the playoffs in 09 against the Bengals. When he looked like a RB
He has played in 47 games and fumbled 9 times. 19% clip there for Greene per NFL.com stats. Greene sucks.
Greene is not fast enough. I dont know what game you are watching. And dont bring up one play or two from 2 years ago. His vision at the line sucks even more than his speed, which therefore makes him look even slower than he is. His vision once he gets to the second level isnt good either, and that doesnt even matter because he doesnt get to the second level. The guy is going to be 28 after this season, so I dont see much improvement ahead for him- vision is something that is like an instinct. The good to great RB's have it. The bad ones don't, and its extremely hard to make your vision better. 22 yards coming from Tebow and 12 coming from Mcknight from wildcat plays. When we run a traditional run play (anything without Tebow basically), what was our average? About 3 ypc, and that blows. Last week on a defense we all thought we could run over, Greene needed 27 carries to just get over 90 yards. Thats terrible.
