Yeah, but what does the Mets record have to do with it? Felix Hernandez won the award with a 13-12 record for a garbage team.
Your are 100% correct, Hernandez had a low era and high strikeouts to innings pitched that year (not unlike Dickey) - While his selection does show that a "garbage team" pitcher can win it - it also shows that they R.A's wins may not account for as much. There are times it is hard to figure out the Baseball Writers. Do not got me wrong I think Dickey should win it - I just don't see them giving it to a 37 year old knuckleballer for the Mets (there is bias) - Hernandez throws 100 mph which impresses some more even if all other stats are comparable.
^ felix doesn't throw 100 mph. Exaggeration there. I don't think they'll be biased against a knuckleballer. I think RA will finish top 3 in the voting and be a strong contender. Whether he wins or not is hard to say. Chapman and Kimbrel will take some votes from the starters so it'll be interesting to see how it ends up. ESPN's Cy Young predictor has Cueto 1, Dickey 2, but Cueto is only .1 ahead (163.2 to 163.1). Chapman is third and Kimbrel isn't in the top 10 somehow. I'm pretty confident that it'll be Cueto or Dickey. The other NL starters haven't done nearly as well. The only starting pitcher with a better WHIP than Dickey this year is Jered Weaver, from the AL. 3 tickets to pirates/mets 9/24 any interest?
Anyway last night I drank a whole load of shit it seems as all I can remember is seeing Bay hit a Grand Slam...last time I make homebrew!!!!
Clearly you have found the magic formula to return Bay's mojo. You must drink perpetually until the end of September, and then pick it up again next April. A true fan would do it.
Nah Bay is a waste of amber nectar.....Fred Wilpon...I am coming to getcha!! Anyway nice of Beltran to make a play in a mets game....from the bench....how the ump could have been sure on that is beyond me.... On a semi serious note the Mets do have some trade chips for next season our SP is potentially a cramped affair ... Niese , Dickey , Harvey and Gee are shoe ins...Santana if pre CG is also a guarantee. We then have Pelfrey ( wont be tendered) , Heffner , Mchugh , Young , Meija plus Wheeler later on in year. I can see one of the first 4 going in trade , probably Niese as he has the most upside of the 4 and would get a fair return but will be interesting to see if Dickey gets his extension ( sounds like a German porno)... Anyways a better season than many of us foresaw....lets just hope someone in AAA like Den Dekker ( If he could add a few more points to his BA he would have been up in Aug as his play in the OF is excellent ) and Wheeler can step up and be stars. I think we have one in Harvery , would be nice to add a couple more of young guys.
Wednesday's game at Citi Field against the Nats should be an interesting one - Strasburg versus Harvey, it being Strasburg's last start of the year and Harvey's next-to-last start. In case you haven't noticed, since Harvey came up at the end of July he has been more effective than Strasburg. They've each had 8 starts during that time period, and Harvey is averaging 5.9 IP per start, with a 3.04 ERA, 1.246 WHIP, 10.1 Ks per 9 IP, and .648 OPS against, while Strasburg is averaging 5.25 IP per start, with a 4.29 ERA, 1.262 WHIP, 9.9 Ks per 9 IP, and .687 OPS against. Not a big sample size, but interesting nonetheless. Edit: And just like that, I'm wrong. The Nats just announced that Strasburg is done for the season. Edit 2: Now that the criticism of this decision is really going to explode, I actually went back and looked at his season. He got off to a tremendous start in April, but since May 1 every other Nats starter has done at least as well as Strasburg, and Gio Gonzalez has been clearly better. Check out the numbers: Strasburg: 3.68 ERA, 1.233 WHIP, .692 OPS against Gio Gonzalez: 3.21 ERA, 1.188 WHIP, .611 OPS against Jordan Zimmermann: 3.30 ERA, 1.272 WHIP, .721 OPS against Edwin Jackson: 3.72 ERA, 1.210 WHIP, .707 OPS against Ross Detwiler: 3.43 ERA, 1.229 WHIP, .662 OPS against Gonzalez and Detwiler have better numbers than Strasburg in all three categories, and Zimmermann's, Jackson's, and Strasburg's numbers are similar. This might actually be less of a deal than everyone thinks.
Cueto got rocked today at home. By Houston! I think there's still a big difference between Strasburg starting a game as opposed to Detwiler or Jackson. Zimmermann and Gonzalez are excellent, no doubt.
First at-bat of the Mets vs Phillies game today, Rollins reaches first base after Striking out on a passed-ball. Never seen that while watching a game
Didn't really know where else to put it but it's good news for me at least.. Guess it's season tickets time http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/news/ar...tebook_id=38581158&vkey=notebook_nym&c_id=nym That being said the Blue Jays did have their top prospects in Vegas although many people said they would keep them in New Hampshire. What they did not do is use too many players for rehab assignments in Vegas.
That's good for you, but is ridiculous for the Mets. I remember them saying a few years ago that being in New Orleans was too far away, and this is obviously far worse. I can understand why Buffalo would prefer to be affiliated with Toronto, but why am I not surprised that the worst affiliate location in major league baseball (which used to be Toronto's) has magically been taken over by the Mets? Are the Wilpons capable of not screwing up anything?
Yet another pathetic performance at home (4-23 in their last 27 home games). It's looking more and more unlikely that Dickey will reach 20 wins, and Cy Young is now out of the question. It's obvious that the team once again completely gave up when things got tough. What a joke.
Yeah, I think I might be the only person this is good for. Las Vegas and I know people who work for them and would agree with me have the absolute worst facilities in all of Triple A. The stadium is a dump, the lockerrooms are shitty. No indoor batting cage. It's all why the Dodgers bailed and went to ABQ. The location is in one of the worst parts of town and that's not even talking about the team being 2500 miles away from New York. If I take my new found fortune out if this there is not one logical reason the Mets should have even considered this move. It's awful on so many accounts and when the GM of the 51's is putting in the press release (in regards to the Blue Jays moving to Buffalo) "we understand the lack of player amenities" that's usually not good. On the bright side I think I'll have ample oppurtunity to let Jason Bay know how much maynardsmyhero from Sheffield thinks he sucks.
Obviously I didn't know any of that, which only makes this more idiotic for the Mets. It really is amazing - the Wilpons are completely incapable of doing the most basic aspects of the business in a competent manner.
Let's put it this way, Las Vegas is probably the least desirable affiliate in all of AAA due to the facilities. Think about it, we have San Diego, Anaheim, Arizona and the Dodgers all within a 4 hour drive yet all have chosen to have thier franchises in other places. Anaheim is in Salt Lake Arizona is in Reno Dodgers are in ABQ Padres in Tuscon Both the Dodgers and Padres have had teams in Vegas and bailed on it. The Dodgers were ideal with the amount of SoCal transplants here but they bailed and then made no secret about why. Everything they asked the city for was denied. To be honest it's so bad that I would not in the least bit surprised to see somebody buy the team and move them to a city that will build them a new stadium. Cashman Field is a dump, that being said the 51's have some great people that work for them. Some of my close friends do so I feel bad ripping the stadium but it has everything to do with the city and not the team.
Well, if it's east of the Mississippi then it's an improvement for the Mets. Watch - the Wilpons' master plan is probably to buy the team themselves!
Question from someone who doesn't get to catch too many Met games: How did they collapse so badly after the relatively-decent first half of the season they had? This is probably the worst free-fall I've seen in the Mets in quite a while (which is saying a lot).
I've come up with great promotions for the new Mets AAA affiliate in Las Vegas 1) Benny Agbayani bobblehead night. No wait it's actually Benny and you get to take him home. 2) Kevin Mitchell beheaded cat night, any fan who brings his girlfriends beheaded cat to the stadium gets two free tickets. 3) Broken bat night, all fans in attendance get a broken bat to throw at an opposing player and can claim they thought it was the ball 4) Bobby Bonilla night, every fan has to pay an extra 10 dollars to attend the game with the proceeds going towards Bobby Bonilla 5) .200 night, if you can hit .200 or better on 10 pitches from a pro the Mets will sign you to play in their infield 6) Bernie Madoff night, Fred Wilpon comes to Vegas so every fan can kick him in the nuts too 7) Vince Coleman Firecracker night, everybody gets an M80 to throw out the window on their drive home.
The Mets had absolutely no choice on Las Vegas. All other AAA affiliations were under contract. Unless the Mets wanted to buy a AAA franchise, they were stuck.
