It's been many hours since "what happened" last night. From the way that people talk about Tebow fans on this forum, I would have expected 50 new threads by 50 posters coming in to gloat and call for Tebow to start. But, the reality is we are moderate and typically don't do stuff like that. In contrast, if Tebow had a game like that... the onslaught would be non-stop from the anti-Tebow crowd. But anyways, I had mentioned several times last week that I didn't think the Bills game was a good indicator of the Jets' offensive prowess, due to Fitzpatrick making the game too easy for Sanchez. Or should I say, the Jets' D playing well against Fitzpatrick? Doesn't matter. Either way, the Bills turned it over so much that it was no contest early on. So now that the Jets played Pittsburgh, who is not the SB quality Pitt from years past and lost while Sanchez didn't have such a great game... what are we predicting now? I think the schedule is tough for the Jets coming up. I don't think Miami is an easy win with the resurgence of Reggie Bush, and their D is underrated, IMO. Sanchez is still clearly the starter, but I don't think he can do what he did last night more than 5 times this season before people start calling for his head. Lot of dropped passes, but as Tebow fans know, that doesn't mean anything when you defend your QB. Crazy thing is Sanchez started out great. He looked like Aaron Rodgers for the first five minutes.
I really think he was playing with a concussion after the helmet to helmet. He just looked like he was proccesing things a tick too slow. I think he was a little foggy. Hopefully it clears up quick
To some in the anti -Tebow crowd, there are no rational Tebow fans. Mark is a good QB and played fantastic early. Hindsight is 20/20 and maybe Tebow should have been given the chance to take over. But maybe Tebow is not ready yet with his offense and not in sync with the other guys enough. I don't know, but the coaches felt the best chance to win was with Sanchez in the last half, despite the fact that not much happened with that offense after a certain point in the game. But maybe Tebow and his offense would have had similar results. Who knows?
Yeah, Mark looked good early on. I was surprised at how the game ended up going. I don't think it would have been a good idea to insert Tebow no matter how bad things were going. If the Jets did something like that this early on, they would not be able to go back to Sanchez. I don't think its quite time to give up on Sanchez... it's just one game after all. He looked real good in Week 1. Let's see how he does over the next few tough weeks. If he pulls off some impressive wins over tough opponents, nobody will remember week 2. I'm seeing shades of Orton, though. The difference is Sanchez has much more support than Orton did. He wouldn't get yanked easily. Sanchez throws downfield better than Orton, IMO. Orton was very heavily dink-dunk passing wise.
I think you may be right on all that. I'm a Tebow fan but I like Mark Sanchez and have always thought he had the potential to be "elite". Sanchez can still be that good in my opinion. It's not too late for him. But to be honest, I'm paying close attention to the Jets because of Tebow.
Same here, except I'm not a fan of Sanchez. I don't dislike him, I'm just not really a fan. That said, I don't want to see him fail. If he does, I'd like to see Tebow get a shot, but I'm not wishing failure on Sanchez or the Jets for that to happen.
Sanchez looked good those first few drives. He looked like the Sanchez of old, though, for the rest of the game.
I'm trying my best to find an upside of this game to dilute my overarching feeling and can't. The trend is bad. Success in the first game through the 1st half, then the Jets shut down. Success in the second game through the 1st quarter, then the Jets shut down. Where's the leadership? Losing sucks!
You could tell the big hit on Sanchez took its toll on him, if not physically certainly mentally. In my mind, it's a reversion to the constant fear from the last year of getting beat to shit every down due to no RT protection. I don't want to excuse the less than stellar performance but I'm also not one to think one game determines the rest of the season. I expected us to lose this one because the Steelers are a huge mismatch for our team. Ok well, this is in the tebow forum so I'll say something about Tebow. The post-game comments were very telling. Tebow came out and said he didn't know what the plan was, he just comes out on the field and executes whatever play is called. That's obvious bullshit. He knows the plays he practices and he knows how the offense intends on using them. Sure, he isn't inside Sporano's head during the game and like any player he wants to be out there every down but he can't honestly say he doesn't understand the plan. The reason he can't say he doesn't understand is by looking at Ryan's comment about Tebow after the game. He said he didn't put Tebow in more because he thought it was a time to pass. That's extremely telling. At very least, the Tebow package does not include much passing, although there probably is a passing play or two. No shotgun spread read moondog option redzone scripture quoting package to save the day. Tebow is not here to pass. If you think it's just Ryan talking, why wouldn't they put in some Tebow passing plays to draw confusion to the Steelers D? Obviously they were all over Sanchez and his receivers.
I don't think he was talking down. I think he was speaking fact. The funny part is that the steelers lined up on defense like he was going to pass. That makes me roflcopter. The Tebow package/wild cat, would have produced more offense then the "regular" offense. If only because Tebow had already forced the steelers to play honest from last season.
Therein lies the key to the most deadly way to use Tebow -- empty backfield. This read option stuff is overblown -- a decent way to get some quality carries to the back (from shotgun) over the course of a long game. But for one drive, one set of downs, one play, whatever? It's Tebow all alone back there, other ten players at or near the line, and create a set of related plays that have run/pass capabilities. It's brutal to defend -- he's one of the few quarterbacks in history that can bust through the line, between the tackles, like a fullback, but also throw an accurate 40 yard pass. You can argue that it's not a long term answer for a franchise offense (maybe I'd argue with you), but here it seems obvious -- if your "package" has Shonne Greene in it, it's going to suck. Go empty backfield.
I notice you didn't dispute anything I said. I'm not talking down his playing, I'm just applying common sense. I actually thought he played better this game than last. Do you really believe Tebow doesn't know how he is most likely going to be deployed in a particular game? You don't think they practiced his drives and plays before the game? The only way you can believe what he said in front of the cameras was true is to also believe he has no idea how he will be played and that the coaching staff would let somebody go onto the field as QB without having done some serious preparation. I don't see how that is even close to possible. And even if you do believe what he said is true, how do you rectify that with what Ryan said? And if you believe Tebow but not Ryan, how do you rectify that with how Tebow has been played the past two games?
I thought you were implying he was a liar rather than employing gamesmanship. I agree that he knows more than he is saying, but no athlete goes on TV and reveals strategy. I'll admit that taken at face value, his comments were "bullshit", as you stated.
I might be missing your point. Are you saying Tebow having a hand full of plays and not knowing when or how they are going to use them is not consistent with Rex said he wasn't putting him in for passing plays. I think it very consistent. I personally don't think Tebow has much of a package at least at this point. I'm not sure he even has a pass play. I will tell you if he runs an option very long without a pass play it will not work even as a decoy once teams figure that out. Again, I might have missed your point.
Which is what the "package" is supposed to be -- why run it if it's not supposedly the most effective thing he can run? Presumably it's a streamlined version consisting of 7-10 plays out of a similar formation. Why is there some kind of resistance to designing plays for him? What is this, some kind of popularity contest or are these football games?
Because there are 10 other people on the field that have to learn an entirely different offensive scheme just for Tebow.
