This team is a defense first team yet year in and year out we get pushed around – specifically down the stretch. Last year it was New England and yesterday Pittsburgh ran the ball down our throats to close out the game. The 10 minute drive at the end of the game where the Steelers converted four 3rd downs is the prime example of this. Not having our #1 draft pick out there because of a “size disadvantage” is flat out dumb. There were way too many times when we had a free runner at Roethlisberger only to see them over pursue right passed Big Ben. That is unacceptable and this defense should be embarrassed.

The defense was gassed from being on the field too long.

The offense and Pitt's great defensive effort were directly responsible for that.

    D-Line is fine
    Secondary is fine with Revis
Linebackers suck, they are the middle of the D its like a sandwich with no meat just bread. We need to get an OLB and hopefully Demario Davis is developing to replace Scott

Harris is best attacking the line
Davis is solid in coverage and a good pass rusher

so they compliment each other better than Harris and Scott do

Pace and Thomas are old so we gotta replace both, 1 a true pass rusher who can rotate with McIntyre and 2 an edge setting run stopper who can rotate with Maybin/Sapp

We've spent the last 3 1st round picks on the defense. It it isn't dominant with Rex Ryan coaching it something is wrong. Like really wrong.

the offense excuse is getting old, from day 1 w/ rex our D has struggled late in games:

2009:at Miami, vs Jax, vs. Atl
    2010: Min, at Cle, Hou,
2011: at Oak, at NE, vs. NE, at Den, at Mia

it's something that has happened almost from day 1 which is why we have never had a true great defense.

The Jets defensive players tend to be older than average, particularly in the front 7. Maybe Rex doesn't force conditioning on them in camp the way some coaches do? He made a big deal about how people needed to come to camp this year in better condition. Well, hard two-a-days and gassers are the way you make sure people are in condition. Maybe he doesn't want to do that?

"Let's go get a f'ing snack" isn't the best way to make sure your players are in good shape.

    did you watch the game?

they got pushed around the first drive of the game. what, were they gassed from warm ups?

what about the second drive of the game, after the offense gave them a break with a 90 yard scoring drive?

or the first possession of the second half, after they had a 4 minute offensive drive to rest on top of halftime.

the Steelers scored 20 point on their first 5 possessions of the game when the defense had plenty of rest. how the hell is that because they were gassed?

they only gave up 7 points after that, which can be blamed on being "gassed," except that being gassed is their own fault because they couldn't get off of it.

try watching the game next time.

The only reason we held themto FGs on those first 2 drives was b/c Pitt tried to get cute w/ fake end arounds and screens rather than just dropping back and throwing which they did at will against us all game.

Pushed us around from the start?

They scored 6 points in the first 28 minutes?

You sure you watched the game?

If the Jets offense keeps going 3 and out. The other team is eventually going to score

clock time doesn't mean shit. Pittsburgh scored 3 time on 4 first half possessions and on their first second half possession.

clock time only shows that the Steelers took a lot of clock time to score when they had the ball, which was, again, the Defense's fault because they couldn't make a stop.

    more dumb fuckery.

The Steelers only scored 7 points after the Jets offense fell apart. the other 20 points came on the opening drive of the game (how was that due to a 3 and out), the second drive of the game after the Jets had a 90 yard drive (please explain how that was due to a 3 and out), the fourth drive of the game (hey, look, finally a 3 and out before it), and then the first possession of the second half after halftime and a Jets 4 minute drive to start the half (hint -- it wasn't a 3 and out).

The Steelers offense was working fast from the beginning. It took some big 3rd down stuffs to hold them to 6. The drives at the end of the 1st half and the beginning of the 2nd half were just bad. Too many penalties and 3rd down conversions.

The defense will be okay. Relax.

The offense lost yesterday's game not the D. The D was bending big time, but they weren't really breaking until the end when they were gassed. They were continually asked to get the ball back in tough situations. They came up big both before and after Kerley's muff which really hurt them. The missed tackles were a result of being on the field the whole game and intensified later in the game - you can't go that long without a completion and expect the defense to bail you out so many times... especially on the road.

They were also missing their best player. The Cromartie "play" was absolutely pathetic, but normally Revis would be on that island and that rainbow wouldn't have been completed. Landry's penalties also killed them.

But the Defense wasn't good because Roethlisberger was great, they didn't lose the game. Roethlisberger might be the best QB in the NFL against blitzing defenses so its not a good match up for Rex's style and it has showed... Big Ben was great yesterday, if the Jets get free rushers like that consistently they will be a tough Defense. They also did a great job stopping the run.

Rex is mad because he demands greatness from his D, but if the defense wasn't as good as they are thats a 30 point loss with all the situations they were put in...

The offense lost the game. You have to produce much better than that... or at least help the defense out.

I wish I had your optimism regarding our defense, but I just don’t at this point.

I didn’t say the D lost the game. I said they have to be better. Which they do. They weren’t consistently put in bad spots. We only turned the ball over once.

Revis would not have been matched up with Wallace. He would have been matched up with Brown.

They played well against the run, sure, but were terrible at stopping the pass. They ran right by Big Ben way too many times when they got the free rush, and the recievers found many holes in the coverage. And they were TERRIBLE on 3rd downs.

Yeah, I was disappointed with the defense early on. Jets come out strong offensively, would have been nice to get a couple drives with 0's. Can't complain too much as they held them to field goals.

The last drive was embarrassing, but at that point they were gassed.

Defense does have to be better. That's why it's a team loss. Defense could have done more to pick up the offense.

That Cromartie-Wallace play in the endzone was just infuriating. If Cromartie breaks that up (or even gets an interception), it's a whole new game. Instead Cromartie shows the awareness of a brick and allows that touchdown.

Roethlisberger on 3rd downs this year: 19-25, 251 yds, 3 TD. 8/10, 119 yds, TD against us.

huh?? you dismiss the 7 points at the end as if it's nothing when the offense only scored 10 all day.

then you only look at the Jets drives DIRECTLY before pittsburgh scoring drives as if those are the only times the offense was out there. - It's a terrible argument because it fails to count for all the times the defense was out their ALL game getting the ball back for the offense.

by the way, even if we chose to ignore our eyes and look at your argument, the first and second drives yielded only six points.. the fourth was after yet another 3 and out and that 4 minute "Drive" you speak of- was 6 plays for -1 yard... not exactly "driving".

Defense needs to create turnovers. Yesterday, Pitt running backs did a great job of securing the football. Ben had to go TIM-BER on more of the line break throughs. We either over pursue or arm tackle.

Our defense played a tough game on the road, with history of wining games at home. Pitt was 0-1 team going into the game. The fans and everyone involved with the Steelers organization demanded a win. In Pittsburgh, this is pretty much what they live for. This would have been a steal from the steelers had we pulled it off. I felt really good going into the game bc our organization demanded a win at home last week and I was riding on the HIGH road. I still think we have a pretty good football team and I still think we will win a lot of games this season and make some noise in the post season. We have young talent on both sides of the football just need to grow from this loss.

I am not dismissing those 7 points at all. the point was it was the only Pittsburgh score in the first half to come after a 3 and out, so you can't blame 3 and outs for why Pittsburgh scored. that wasn't hard to grasp.

I can't believe you are having such difficulty keeping up with the discussion. the dumb fuck argument being championed is that the defense only gave up points because the offense failed to move the ball and give them a rest. what I was discussing was the Steelers first 20 points of the game, which came on their first five possession when the offense only had one 3 and out, so any attempt to claim it was due to the offense has no basis in reality. so, you only have to look at the offensive possessions around those 20 points, not the rest. why is that hard to grasp?

the point is time of possession. try to keep up.

the argument is that the defense was tired because they were not getting breaks by the offense. that is bullshit. the offense gave them enough time off the field in between possessions, but the defense could not get themselves off the of the field.
this is sheer bullshit. as I have stated repeatedly, the Steelers scored 20 points on their first five possessions when the offense gave them plenty of time in between possessions, plus a halftime break.

the reason why they were gassed was because they couldn't get off the field from the get go.

first Steelers drive was 5:53. how the fuck were they tired on the first drive, nevertheless tired because of the offense?

second Steelers drive was 4:23, following a 4:48 Jets drive. why couldn't the Jets Defense get off the field, they had a nearly 5 minute break? clearly fatigue wasn't the problem, nevertheless fatigue due to the offenses woes.

next Jets possession 5:21. so, in the first 20 minutes the time of possession is even essentially 10 to 10.

both teams go 3 and out on their next possessions. and the Steelers go 5:40 at the end of the half for a TD. so on 4 first half possessions the Steelers get 13 points with the offense giving the Defense a reasonable break. how the fuck is that the offenses fault.

then the Defense got the 12 minute halftime break, plus a 4:02 Jets drive to rest. a 16 minute break.

how does the Defense respond? a PIttsburgh TD in less than 2 and a half minutes.

that is 20 points on the defense based on their own inability. how the fuck are any of those scores on the offense?

the fact is the Steelers got only 7 more points after that, when the offense completely fell apart.

so, even if we completely attribute the defenses fatigue on the offense's 3 and outs in the second half, and not attribute any of it to the defenses ability to make stops on their own that is 7 points to blame on the offense and 20 points on the defense.

please attempt to dispute these facts.
