Of course, Jets should do very well to draft in conventional manner with top picks and mid picks. Now, what I mean by this "new direction" is this: 1. Jets should draft a QB from spread option offense. If Tebow does bolt from Jets after this season, that QB will replace Tebow. If he can bulk up to 260, even better. If he can catch, wow. You struck gold. 2. Safeties, safeties and more safeties. If LaRon stays healthy, he should be extended - that's a given. That said, still, safeties, safeties and more safeties. 3. Third mantra? Tight ends, tight ends and more tight ends. If they can block, even better - just, tight ends that can both block and catch are incredibly rare, and will demand high draft pick status.
I agree a Tight End with good receiving and blocking skills is a need, I have the Jet's drafting UCLA's Fauria in Rd 2. Keller's contact will be expiring and there is no guarantee he will be a Jet in 2013. IMO, a OLB is a big need, two of my favorites are Jarvis Jones and Chase Thomas. We have Smith, Bush and Allen for depth at the safety position. Landry and Bell must stay healthy and sign a new contract, if they do, I'd pass on the safety position early in the draft. I don't see the Jet's going into a spread offense as long as Sanchez continues to progress. I could also see us adding another OT early, Jake Matthews would be a nice fit.
I was watching the Bama vs Western Kentucky game the other day and a name that really stood out for me all day long was Jack Doyle, TE, from Western Kentucky. Hes a big dude at 6-6 250 and has the ability to both block and receive. He'd be a bit of a project but I'd love to see what he can do in the future. Also, I agree we should address safety with Bell most likely hanging it up next season. I immediately think of guys like Eric Reid, TJ McDonald, and Bacarri Rambo, one of which I hope we acquire. I have a few safety sleepers but they arent needed on this team with the addition of Bush and possibly Allen. We'll need one of those 1st to 2nd round valued safeties.
I'd be down for Tyler Eifert in round 2. Sparano loved Fasano and Eifert is the far better TE(Outside of run blocking, Eifert has looked good thus far though) and would replace Keller. My prediction is RB in round 1, TE in round 2, OLB in round 3, OT in round 4, MLB in round 5, WR in round 6, CB in round 7. Don't think Greene will be back and the Jets might target someone like Lattimore or some other RB if they have a top 20-25 pick.
As of this momemt, I don't see a 1st Rd RB. Lattimore needs to stay healthy. I don't like the idea of spending a 1st Rd pick on a RB. If you like Eifert, you probably will have to spend a late 1st rd pick for his services. Also, if Fauria continues to play like he did in week one, he will be a 1st rd pick.
I'm gonna take the opposite approach with these tight ends, though I see why people want one early on. The league is full of guys who have been mid round picks who have been good tight ends. Unless there is a guy with crazy high upside available or it matches up with our board Id be inclined to pass. We still need a tackle, running back and a younger outside linebacker
We need to add a RB in this draft... And not another late round pick. We need a true work horse, because our RB's arent really ideal for a team looking to run the rock 30+ times a game. Lattimore is great and would love him on this team. Outside of him I dont know who else is 1st round worthy... As WW stated. If Austing Howard pans out, and Landry stays healthy, RB, OLB and TE become top priority IMO.
1. To clear the air out: I did say Jets must draft conventionally with early and mid picks. That means Jets must address OLB(x2, preferably) and OT with first three, then RB. 2. I did not have the change to spread option offense in mind when I addressed the QB thing. I believe the dual-threat QB that stays as a thorn in offense and ST phase of the game will become the norm sooner or later - especially if Jets strike gold with Tebow. Of course I don't think you can ask every spread-option QB to bulk up and be a TE, but you can always ask him to become a slot receiver - and obtain similar result. Backup QB spot is a wasted roster spot either way - and this will put that roster spot to a very good use.
OLB- Bjoern Werner is my fav prospect I know some see him as a strict DE but he reminds me of Clay Matthews and looks solid in coverage and plays the run like a mad man. Barkevious Mingo, Sam Montgomery and Jarvis Jones(I think he's too small for us) will be gone if we go deep in the playoffs TE- I love love love Eifert, Fauria is pretty good but I'd love to take a late round flyer on Stoneburner who's developing under Urban Meyer RB- I'm really diggin Le'Veon Bell and Stepfan Taylor hell if I had it my way I'd draft both, but Bell seems like the ideal guy for me. Great size, hands, vision and picks up blitzes well S- Eric Reid is my fav prospect, TJ McDonald is very good and Rambo is probably the best in coverage of the 3 WR- Holmes has many question marks, Schillens who knows with him so I think we gotta add at least a 4-5 round WR and I got my eye on Marcus Davis form VA Tech 6-4 232 and great hands. 1- Bjoern Werner 2- Baccari Rambo(character issues) 3- Le'Veon Bell 4- Marcus Davis 5- Jake Stoneburner(character issues)
