While the Giants in fairness place a good deal of emphasis on their D, compared to the Jets theirs is a very different kind of D. To be fair they have tried to get their secondary up to snuff, spending high draft picks and making big trades, but right now and most of last season they have suffered from their first round pick on Prince, and some other injuries. Lack of strength at CB is why they lost that game last night, if you had to isolate one variable. In this league you need top corners if you are facing a balanced attack like the Boys showed last night. In short if the Giants had CB's approaching the Jet CB's, they would have won that game. Not that the Jets themselves necessarily would have. The Giants have their offensive issues, but they are much stronger on O overall than the Jets.
Giants still have the same issue they had last year - can't run the ball for more than 90 yards in a game and their secondary is a mess with all their injuries. Might be a pass first league, but running the ball for 120 yards a game makes everything easier.
Difference between the Giants and Cowboys last year in the regular season was the Cowboys were finding ways to lose games in the 4th quarter and the Giants found a way to turn a few around in the 4th and win. Cowboys weren't much worse last year they were pretty even. Now that the Cowboys fixed their cornerback problem I think they are the better team. Their defense last night looked much much better than last years with that improved secondary and their D line still looked nasty. I'd pick the Cowboys to win the division. The Eagles still have a shot at it but I don't trust Vick in staying healthy.
Also so much for JPP's 30 sack season as he puts up a 0 in that column opening day. Good call Kiwanuka.
if the giants had CBs approaching the Jets CB's, they would be in violation of the salary cap ... it doesnt work like that
I know that, but that's not the point. The point is that there's a cost to having the level of quality of CB's that the Giants were able to put on the field last night as compared to the Jets. Some here take the position that the Jets would be not hurt all that much if we changed out Revis and Cro for average CB's. I think that is nonsense. Romo is not one of the great Qb's in the league, and his favorite receiver was really dinged up for last night's game. Yet the Giants could not counter their passing game even with what is supposed to be their strength, their pass rush. In short it is nonsense to say as some here do that there would be no real cost to not having quality corners. The Boys themselves had problems last year with average cb's and upgraded this year. First game out of the box they do not give up the leads in the fourth quarter they did last year, against a strong passing team like the Giants, defending their SB win on their home field. If that doesn't say something about the debate on the value of cornerbacks, I don't know what does.
Giants were 9-7 last year and got hot and lucky during the playoffs. I wouldn't be surprised if they missed the playoffs completely this year, I think people have been vastly overrating them based on a Hail Mary and a couple of dropped punts in the playoffs.
i see, i assumed you were in the we need to be like the giants camp like most people on the board ... i agree with your post
At least the Jets have never been swept by the Staten Island Stapletons... http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/sis/1930.htm
Well, I do admire their DL, but I would rather have the Jet D than theirs. They were the better team last year because of their O being much better.
I tend to be overly optimistic at times, but I'm hoping our young D-linemen can turn into a comparable unit. I like Wilkerson, Coples and Kendrick Ellis from what we've seen so far.
The Giants are absolutely overrated. Their last two Super Bowl championship teams are easily at the bottom of the list of Super Bowl champions. But that is like being at the bottom of the list of guys who have fucked Kate Upton -- you still fucked her, so that is hardly anything to be ashamed of. I would gladly take the Jets winning the Super Bowl and considered the worst Super Bowl champion of all time than not win it at all. at the end of the day, no Jet fan has grounds to mock the Giants championships or even their game last night. they fucked Kate Upton and we jerked it at home last season. just because they got turned down at the bar last night doesn't change anything, especially when we were home playing video games.
I tend to agree with you, but the Jet DL is something of a work in progress that may well mesh as early as this season. The Giant DL is already a very good one.
If anybody should know by now. It's the giants that one game doesn't mean anything. All they need is to stay at 500. and get hot late in the season.
I don't think it is a matter of saying the Giants didn't deserve their championships, or blaming it on luck or something like that. If you win a superbowl, you deserve it, nobody hands you one, or in their case 2 in the last 5 years. But it does piss me the fuck off when I have to read the nonsense from every outlet of the New York media that came out over the summer having you believe that 1) the Giants are an elite model franchise, 2) the Jets are a dysfunctional circus, and 3) the gap between the two franchises is the Grand Canyon. Sorry, but fuck that, its typical media sensationalist bullshit. It's not juicy enough to say that New York has 2 competitive football teams on about the same level, and one of them was fortunate to play well at the right time and win the super bowl. No it has to be one team operates with a halo and wings at all times, and the other is a bunch of clowns. It's crap, and I think that is what pisses a lot of Jet fans off, it's certainly what pisses me off. The 2010 Jets were better than any Giant team in the last 15 years. Combined with the 2009 Jets, those two Jet teams still have more postseason wins than the Giants in their four seasons since the 07 superbowl win. Does that mean that the Jets are a better organization? No. And it sure as shit doesn't take anything away from either superbowl the Giants won. But at the same time, the Jets should not be treated as if they are some sort of embarrassing, incompetent pro sports organization compared to the "model franchise" of the league, when they basically have been operating at the same level of competitiveness since Woody owned the Jets, moreso since Rex took over as HC. And if you want to get into luck, if the 2010 Jets played in the overrated as shit every year NFC East, they would have won a division at 11-5, and played at least one game at home. Instead they are stuck playing every season behind the actual model franchise of the NFL, where unless everything operates to perfection, you are settling for a wild card at best, and 3 road playoff games. And last year? Where if reading the papers or listening to the radio is any indication, the Giants outclassed the Jets 10 fold, the Giants finished a game better, with a head to head win in the sloppiest game I have ever seen on an NFL field. Does anyone here think that if the Jets and Giants swapped divisions last year, the Jets couldn't have won one more game? And then the Giants make the playoffs and they get an opponent who had no business playing in the game, a good win over Green Bay, hail mary's and all, and then the SF punt returner playing hot potato with them in the 4th quarter. They took advantage of all this and won the super bowl and GOOD FOR THEM, fuck I was even rooting for them, but this nonsense about the Giants being the model franchise of the league, the epitome of class, the standard by which all sports teams should operate, (by the way where was ANYONE saying the Giants were better than the Jets before Cruz's 99 yarder. Thats the worst part, all these talking heads have the memory of a fish to go along with their idiocy) and the Jets are a circus, sideshow, incompetent bunch of clowns that have no idea how to win football games, despite, you know winning 4 road playoff games in the last three years. Fuck that, it should annoy every Jet fan.
The Post is a piece of shit. However, that picture and assessment is accurate. Please note the 2 trophies the Giants are holding.
