 How was Joe Namath at those split second decisions? 50.1 completion percentage, he must have been terrible!
maturity most certainly can make your WRs better. maturing in a system means a better grasp of the playbook/defensive looks and an ability to put your WRs in better positions to succeed ... a qb recognizing a defensive look and audibling his receivers route to get him open doesnt make the WR a better player? get real experience != talent, the jets WRs have plenty of talent at the WR position. most of them need seasoning tho yes the jets have screwed around with sanchezs receivers for his first three years but he now has a trio that he can grow with and yet youre still bitching
Grow with won't mean anything this season unless all 3 WR's projected to play a lot are on top of their game and at least one of them, the rookie, is unlikely to be. When all is said and done my guess is that Mark Sanchez will represent the biggest missed opportunity in Jet's history, with only Vinny's achilles and Richard Todd's career coming close in terms of impact on the team's chances.
sanchez has at least this year and next year ... he has plenty of time to develop with his receivers we dont need the offense the be world beaters this year
Love how we get brought up in almost every football broadcast conversation. Last night, they are talking to Eli Manning before the Giants and Cowboys game somehow, not surprisingly at all, they begin talking about Tebow and Sanchez. It is truly amazing. This year has me scratching my head more than ever, what do people find so interesting about my team? Fuck it, I guess it's why I love them too. Go Jets!
For all of Sanchez's faults, he is a tough SOB. The punishment he went through last season was unbelievable, but he never missed a snap. He was clearly rattled mentally the final few games, but it looks like he has shaken that off in preseason. IMO he's an average QB at this point, but the league is full of average QB's that win a lot of games.
That's my feeling, I think the kid has the tools and the makeup to be a good QB in this league although not elite. Till this day I will never understand why you draft a "franchise QB" and not build around him through the draft. Hill was the 1st WR we took high and it's now Sanchez's 4th year. We have not addressed the OL other then a "project" garbage waste of a pick. Nobody will ever question the commitement we have made to the defense but I think in order to win you need to commit to both sides of the ball in the draft.
They certainly could have done more for the OL over the past couple of seasons but I don't think you can call Vlad a "garbage waste of a pick". By all accounts he's made a lot of improvement and may see quite a bit of playing time this season. The jury is still out but he deserves at least this season to prove himself as nobody expected him to make an immediate impact when he was drafted. We're not talking VG here.
Tanny drafts BPA, not for need, as (IMO) every team should do. I haven't always agreed with the player they thought was BPA, but I will back the philosophy all the way. That said, he's brought in weapons, such as Greene, Holmes, Braylon (which didn't work out), and later round RBs like McKnight and Powell. Keller is and has been a great weapon for Sanchez, so TE hasn't been a big priority. Slauson and Vlad on the line as well, even if Slauson is average and Vlad (seemingly) a future bust. I think, with the exception of the RT fiasco this off/preseason, Tanny's done a good job of maintaining the talent on this team.
I don't understand how people are so certain that this is Sanchez's final year with the Jets. Assuming that it's not, the current group of WRs will return next year, along with Sanchez, so that solves the chemistry/familiarity problem. (And the FO will probably add another talented WR that Sanchez can begin to form a new chemistry with.)
I am a big Sanchez supporter, and believe he is a good QB, but your assessment of Joe is way off. The NFL was a completely different league when he played. First off, the DB's were allowed to rape WR's on passing routes. Second off, the rules of the game have changed so much that the league is so much more passing friendly than it was back then. Third off, Joe played on some horrible teams. Comparing Joe's completion percentage to anyone today's is just not a fair comparison.
As much as it sickens me, Tebow will be starting by week 5 or 6 at the latest. Once that happens, the Jets really cannot go back to Sanchez. The chances of Sanchez having success early on with everything he has going against him are slim to none. The Tebow fanatics, media, and even some Jet fans are going to turn so hard on Sanchez that Tebow will be in early in the season. He will probably do OK too, but no team will ever win a SB with Tebow as the starting QB, that I am sure of. I am not sure about Sanchez yet, I don't think he has been given a fair shake over the last year or so.
Why the hell did they not keep Braylon? He should still be a Jet. That would have helped us have a winning record last year. Mark had confidence in Braylon.
I just don't like the idea of using a 2nd round pick on a project. When you are one player away you can do that. We made the AFC Title game the year before but still needed a bit to catch the Pats. Yes making the playoffs is a big deal but winning a division and getting home playoff games is as well. My point is Vlad is the only OL we have drafted high and he was a project. For a team "commited" to ground and pound we haven't done much to build a big mauling physical OL. I think if you look around the league the recipe is there. Look at the teams that are consistently among the best in the league and they all have one thing in common. A solid OL. It's no coincidence that the Steelers, Pats, Giants, Packers and Saints all have good OL and look to improve that OL every year. We try to hard to make a splash but IMO should be concentrating on teh trenches. We have done that on one side of the ball but ignored it on the other. I think we have different ideas of what weapons are. I think all the above named players are role players but not lethal weapons. I think Hill will turn into a big weapon. Holmes has the potential to be a big weapon but none of those guys are game changing players. Braylon was a game changing player with his size, speed and physical attitude but for whatever reason he was left out to dry. Greene outside of the playoffs in his rookie year has failed to live up to expectations and McKnight and Powell are nothing more then 2nd stringers. We have plenty of game changing players on defense but I just think failing to put big time weapons around your franchise QB is a mistake and it is probably going to be exposed again this year.
I don't have the statistic on hand so excuse me if I'm misrepresenting but I remember seeing a statistic last season that when Ducasse was in the game last year the Jets were averaging 6 YPC in the run game. The developmental aspect of Ducasse is the pass blocking / protection. If they can get him to a point where they feel comfortable with him protecting Sanchez over the course of a full game he'll be a fairly nice replacement for Moore down the road.
Guess who is the only player in the last 40 years drafted before the 5th round from the University of Massachusetts? Guess how many players have been taken from UMass in any round in the last 14 years? Vladimir Ducasse is the answer to both questions. Taking him in the 2nd round was a horrible pick with predictably horrible results. Sometimes you see a guy who looks like a monster player playing at a non-football power and you think "I wonder how he would do against real competition?" Vlad is showing us the answer to that question for most of those players. Just a horrible waste of a 2nd round choice.
Don't want to go too far off topic but just to respond to this, I don't disagree at all. I think they got a bit comfortable with the OL in 09 and 10 and didn't see a big need to add to it. After last season it was all of a sudden a glaring weakness when the Hunter experiment failed terribly, Brick had a down season and Slauson played injured much of the year. I was sure they would draft OL in one of the first two rounds this draft, maybe 3rd at the latest, but what we ended up with was a 6th rounder who didn't even make the roster - thank god Howard looks like he might come out of nowhere and be the answer at RT... we'll see. So, I agree that they have badly neglected the Oline in the draft and FA but I don't think that it's fair to put a bust label on VD yet, that's all. To come back to the original topic, the neglect of the Oline has definitely had a big effect on Sanchez and the WRs. The passing game was a shambles last year because the pass protection broke down so often and so badly. It made Sanchez look worse than he actually was and put a lot more pressure on everyone to perform this year and prove that this team isn't in a downward spiral as the media seems to think. Examples like this article are a good sign that Mark knows how important this season is to his career and is doing what he needs to do to reach the next level as a QB and as the team's leader.
