A) How do we know all of those guys never said anything critical about their former team? We're not fans of those teams and we don't exactly follow the coverage of those teams. And you're definitely wrong on one of them, Terry Bradshaw has been VERY critical of Ben Roethlisberger. B) On a certain level, you'd rather have former players care about the team than not give two shits after they retire. I'm not saying Joe's entirely right, like I said he's done it WAY too much (and it's funny how Namath kills the Jets for wanting attention, since that's basically what HE does) but it's not the one-sided view you have either.
I don't think it's candyland logic to state that Woody Johnson cares more about the bottom line than the wins and loss columns. I'm not saying he wants the team to fail, but I think he's completely happy with an average team creating the most buzz in the league. Several things the Jets have done under Woody and several things Woody has said lend credence to that line of thinking. I get that you disagree with it, but you can't just dismiss it as silly because it doesn't fit your opinion.
Wow, Namath pretty much hit the nail directly on the head in that interview. The Jets had some serious problems with attitude and Namath (whom I really believe really does care about the team) voiced his concerns about that. I believe Namath truly does want to see the Jets succeed and, being the outspoken individual he has ALWAYS been, he has no problems calling out if he thinks they are making mistakes in how they go about trying to be a successful franchise.
You do realize the Redskins, and 49ers have two of the top 5 longest sell out streaks in the NFL, right? Of course you don't. The last 10 years, they have been so successful, right? That is not always what sells tickets in the first place. As you would say, "Don't let the facts get in the way, right?" How was Namath a hypocrite? He placed showmanship and winning on the same level. Explain to me, as a SB winning QB, who gutted it out and played as a borderline gimp with his knees, yet laid it all on the line every sunday, placed showmanship over winning. If you read any of his autobiographies (which I'm sure you didn't because in your never ending wisdom and sensitivity, you just resort to making alcoholic jokes). He talks of a conversation he had with Sonny Werblin (Jets owner when Namath was drafted) and Werblin's wife. Namath was pissed over media coverage of the Jets. Werblin's wife told him, "Joseph, it's show business." Namath realized that being marketable and winning were on an equal plain. Namath then played the showbiz card better than anyone at the time AND STILL WON. He made himself marketable, made ton of money and still won a world championship. Another famous interview was in the locker room after they won the SB. A reporter famously asked, "Joe...it took you 4 years to win. Did you think it would happen so quick?" Namath snapped back, "FOUR YEARS?? That's a long time. I want to win EVERY year!" Why? Because he was passionate about winning, not just being in the media. Difference with Woody, a billionaire businessman, is he doesn't have the passion Namath does. Football is far from his only business. If the Jets aren't winning, he'll take the media attention. I'm not saying he's okay with 3-13, but he'll take media over winning if that's the situation that presents itself. He just doesn't want both losing and nobody caring. His latest comment, "You can never have too much Tim Tebow" is embarrassing. How does that help Mark Sanchez (you know....the starting QB)? Do you think Sanchez is cool with that? How does that help the team? If that's not proof he's more concerned with media than helping to build a team around Sanchez, than there is nothing that will ever change your mind. It's all right though. You can just tell someone to "kindly shut up", or make Namath alcoholic jokes.
Alright, that was 3 games into the season. I thought we were talking the off season? I do remember that. I still don't agree with him, just because they went 8-8. But this is irony at its finest. People on this board bash players on our current roster, calling them pieces of shit, and plenty of other stuff not worth repeating, yet when I mention something like that, people get up in arms about it. That's the whole joke of this thing. If somebody comes off with an attacking attitude, they shouldn't be upset when people attack back. at saying it's low class, when it happens in every other thread to players on our team. The nonsense people have said about Holmes this off season has been 10 times worse than anything I've ever said about Joe Namath. He had his day, but he wears clown shoes now. I can't put it any other way. Am I not allowed to voice my opinion in a thread? I think Namath is way off base here. You don't like my opinion, that's tough cookies. I have just as much right to explain how utterly absurd that opinion is as he has to say it. People shouldn't be mad at me. Everyone's taking it personally that I dissed Namath. Get over it. It's nothing compared to what everyone else does to people on the current roster. Yes, it's ironic. Yes it's hypocritical.
as for JOE being inebriated ,there are a few on this team could do with taking a drink  Joe always called it how he seen it ,cant believe he said we might win 9/10 games :breakdance:
Sirius NFL ran the entire Namath interview this morning - Joe was excellent and very supportive of Sanchez and he specifically didn't knock Rex, Sparano or Tebow - its amazing how distorted this stuff actually gets from the questions that he was actually asked and the very measured and thoughtful responses that he actually gave. the lunatic fringe on here such as Barcs that want to attack Joe need to dial it down about 10 clicks at least. Its obvious that you didn't even hear the entire interview, because if you had heard it you would have realized that Namath was excellent and fair in his responses and very knowledgable as to not just the jets - but Qbs throughout the NFL and the wildcat offense. You are free to have an opinion and are free to live under the delusion that you know more about football then a HOF QB does, but at least listen to the actual entire interview before you decide to make stuff up in order to rip a guy.
i like namath. like it or not, he's mr jet. he cares about the jets and doesn't care about criticism. he's flawed but he's ok in my book. it is funny that a guy who was never one to shy away from the camera might goof on the jets trying to grab headlines. but, whatever. he's cool.
How can anyone be sensitive to what Joe says and be a Jet fan? You picked the wrong team to be sensitive about. Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using Tapatalk 2
A lot of bad blood towards Joe Namath. He continuously gets asked tough questions because he answers honestly. His replies are things we ALL know to be true. But we all assume he should sugar coat everything, keep the peace. Sorry. He tells the truth WHEN ASKED...that's why the media keeps asking him. They love the headlines. Can't say I disagree with any of his opinions.
Good to see Joe Namath got his balls back after he divorced that lunatic ex-wife of his and sobered up. He might be a bit annoying and he might not always be right but he'll always be Joe Namath. He can say whatever the hell he wants.
That's what I think too. Most of the time Namath including now is on the money with his comments. However, most ex stars know enough to not get involved or volunteer to answer such questions. What good could come of it? Ironically the Jets and Namath have one thing in common they crave attention. Joe just can't say no to the media.
Joe Namath has been far more consistently right than those who post negative and personal comments about him here have been. If anything I think he's too optimistic about the coming season.
