Welp, I see this place is still the same negative shitty hellhole it was last fall, so have fun guys.
Yep. Just the D-line coach for one of the most dominant defensive lines in the history of the game. He may as well have been handing out Gatorade.
I'm still trying to figure out why people, after all three years, would take anything Rex Ryan says without a truck load of salt especially since most of what he says is a truck load of bullshit anyway. Now that the real Rex Ryan is resurfacing, we can expect more of these gems during the season. I just hope folks don't lose their minds every time Rex says something halfassed controversial. Concentrate on the play on the field, not the play to the media.
Everyone is taking this out of context. All he is saying is Hill is great, he wishes he could say he wanted him, but he didn't most likely since he has a defensive mind.
He was a defensive coach on the most dominant defense of all time and you think he had little to do with it? Not to mention the D line on that defense was absurdly good. That whole front 7 was just ridiculous.
Well atleast he isn't blowing smoke up anybody's ass is he? I don't mind it, maybe he feels like Hill needs motivation to succeed, and just wanted to provide some. Hill seemed more determined after his drop pass, maybe showing that sometimes he needs that extra push to take him over, and Rex is just playing to it. I'm not surprised that Rex didn't want a WR, I'm pretty sure he was thinking defensive player there, or someone on the OL that could help with the run and pound.
Look at it from Rex's POV.... He's in a position where he needs to win NOW. Stephen Hill is a project with tremendous upside but it'll take about 2 or so years for him to develop. Those 2 or so years are time that Rex simply doesn't have in his eyes so if Rex had his say, he'd take a WR whose ready to step in right away and contribute to keep him off any hot seat.
Just for those dialing in now - you need to read the actual very short piece on Sports Illustrated: Don Banks: "In training camp, when I asked him how he knew rookie second-round receiver Stephen Hill was ready to contribute early, Ryan gave me a very honest, but curious answer." Rex: "Well, nothing told me he would (contribute),'' Ryan said. - this is in response to the question "How did you know he was ready to contribute early" - it wasn't Rex saying - "I didn't think we would get anything from this guy" He then goes on to say: "He was the guy they all wanted, but honestly, when it came down to it, a wideout? Not my dream pick." - this is clearly Rex joking and playing up to his "I only care about D" stereotype. Rex: "But now that we have him, of course, I want to claim him: 'Oh, that was my pick.' But it really wasn't.'' This is Rex basically saying "wow - what a great pick I am glad we have him, I wish I could take credit for it but I cant" - again, its rex being positive and joking around. Please don't just take the usual nfl.com/espn negative spin on everything Rex says as being in any way representative of the truth. In fact the headline to this thread should really be "Rex surprised by early success of Hill" /rant over Read more: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/20...n-hill-jets-notebook/index.html#ixzz25GEZ1RML
It is very possible that Rex is just throwing out his scouting opinion and, if that's the case, it shouldn't shock anyone that Hill isn't his top choice. I doubt Rex has ever liked a WR more than any position on defense. If Rex were to take a shining to a WR I see it being more of a big-bodied and sure-handed possession WR than a big play guy like Hill. Rex seems to like a ball-control offense; I don't know that Hill is the ideal type of WR for that. It's also worth noting that Rex could just be pulling a Parcells and trying to fire up Hill via the media.
Hill is not a posession guy at this point, but he does give the threat of the deep ball. This will help with both play action and openign up the underneath routes on passing downs. I was not in love with him at draft time, but see the potential. The problem being we don't have time for potential, we need production now. I hope the kids ready!
the hill pick was all about his potential. this is not exactly a new revelation for Mr. Hill or anybody else. the lunatic fringe wishes to turn this fact into some kind of indictment of Rex. The fact is that Hill has a lot of potential and we all know that is was a bit of a gamble and we all hope it works out.
Potential is an even mix of attributes and results. A guy who has great attributes but skimpy results really doesn't have huge potential. It would be an upset of major proportions if a guy who caught 49 passes in 3 years in college turned into an 80 catch a year player in the NFL. That said, there's no reason that Hill couldn't do what Vincent Jackson has done and give the Jets a deep threat good for 60 or so. That'd be a bit unusual but not totally unexpected the way him turning into a major star would be. People need to get ahead of the curve here and stop making Calvin Johnson and Randy Moss comparisons, even casually. That's a road that will see Hill wrecked in a ditch pretty quickly because he's not even a level down from those guys. He's not even on the same landscape. The guy he's a level down from is Demaryius Thomas. That's the guy we can realistically hope Hill turns into. If he did that he'd help the Jets.
I agree with you that you need a player with speed to open up the defense and take advantage of play action at coverage seams, but I don't know that you need to spend a 2nd round pick for a guy that is primarily going to be a fast decoy. I really do believe that a possession WR, most likely in the mold of a guy like Anquan Bolden in his prime, is the perfect fit for the type of offense Rex wants. I'm not saying he doesn't want big plays, but I think he's more comfortable with those big plays coming out of extraordinary effort from the individual as opposed to by the design of the play. I think he'd probably be pretty happy with an offense that moves the ball down the field 7-12 yards a clip through the air as it gives his defense time to rest and be coached up.
I don't think the media is ever going to grow weary of making mountains out of molehills whenever Rex talks. I honestly think there's a better chance of Rex realizing that the press won't change and simply giving short and uninteresting answers. Having said that, I said "a better chance" not "a chance of this ever happening ever."
What a pile of crap by the many that take everything that its been said as an indictment on the coach. People go out of their way to make him look bad. As far as I'm concerned he is doing a fantastic job, he brought us a damn good defense and respectability on the field. He is what he is, he carries his heart in his sleeve, he accepts his mistakes, his sense of humor is totally misunderstood, but he tells it like he sees it. People trashed Mangini's secrecy and now hate Rexes candor. He frankly has a better resume that most starting coaches and was one of the best defense coordinators and a damn good pick for us. He is growing as a HC. We also need to stop blaming him for some of the work on selecting lower draft picks and look instead at our scouting geniouses. That will be the next area to change. Meantime give him a Freaking chance. Lets see what this season brings to us.
