I got in to an argument with a Jet-fan friend of mine. I told him shortly after the Super Bowl that Woody Johnson was going to do something big this offseason. I really believe that Woody Johnson wants to win, but he wants to make money and be in the limelight more. I agree with the amount of attention the Jets are receiving being ridiculous. And I know that there are some fans who believe that this is the fault of the media itself. The press goes to the Jets for most of their stories because they know the Jets are going to provide. If there were 500 reporters at Giants' camp, most of them would leave with boring stories and rote repetition of camp drills. As far as Namath is concerned, I think that fans need to keep in mind who he is and what makes him great. He's never been afraid to open his mouth; why should now be any different? This idea that he somehow owes the Jets lifelong fealty is ridiculous. Have you ever heard Sonny Jurgenson on DC radio? He fellates the Redskins every chance he gets and he comes across as a clown. I'm not a huge Joe Namath fan, but I really wouldn't want to see him as a castrated cheerleader of a media pundit.
 You do realize that teams winning is what sells tickets in the first place, right? Saying Woody doesn't want to win is beyond absurd and I can't believe people are actually agreeing with that nonsense. Might as well start talking about the tooth fairy here, because logic is out the window at this point. It's funny as hell that you got upset about positive fans dissing fans that constantly bitch and whine about nonsense, but here you are essentially doing the same thing attacking positive fans because they don't agree with Namath. The pot is certainly calling the kettle black here. Joe Namath is getting ripped because he showed the same "headlines over winning" crap when he was on the team. He's a hypocrite.
No, another win would not have gotten us into the playoffs. We would have lost the tie breaker. We need 10 wins to guarantee post season last year. And I completely disagree that Tebow would not be here if we made the playoffs, unless somehow Schotty kept his job. Sparano is obviously the brains behind bringing in Tebow.
No, I'm saying that his opinion is equivalent of a chimp dissing computer technology. No factual basis in reality. I wasn't asking Joe. I was asking the man who claimed his opinion was a "damn valid point". For something to be valid it needs justification. If it doesn't have it, you can't claim it's valid. It's really simple. I didn't say it wasn't valid to be concerned. I said it wasn't valid to say the Jets care about headlines more than wins. That notion is utterly retarded. Of course it was football related. The facts are that Tebow has succeeded in the Wildcat option role in Denver, and that Tebow is a good runner. If you have facts to suggest he makes the team worse, then post them. If not, kindly shut up and leave the thread. Thanks.
Don't tell me to shut up. See you are proving that you can't handle opinions other than your own. Exactly what I was saying about Joe. We can't prove Tebow makes the team worse because they haven't played a game yet. Also the alternative doesn't exist... ie. maybe that fourth round pick brings the Jets a decent RT that they need more than a backup QB who brings the attention that he brings. Not only that, Even if he does in fact make the team better it doesn't prove that it wasn't about bringing attention to the team. You don't think that factor once crossed the minds of the Jets brass? Do you live in a fantasy world?
Why? What has this former great Jets player (now fan) done to be so "shunned" by other Jets fans? Please explain?
Joe is entitled to have an opinion and frankly he knows more about football than anybody on this board does. so feel free to disagree an whine b/c he isn't kissing up to the Jets. But just remember that last season he was 110% correct in his early season critique of he team when alot of you homers were still running around guaranteeing a super bowl victory.
I did say "kindly". I can't handle it? Sorry, if I see someone talking nonsense I'm going to call them out. If I couldn't handle it I wouldn't bother responding. It's not about petty emotion, it's about logic to me. No offense, I was a big debater throughout school, and afterwards which is why I seem argumentative at times. No 4th round RT, could come in and start right away and make a difference for us this year. Tebow is essentially a replacement for Brad Smith. We missed him in 2011, and this helps fill a hole since he is known to do well in that WC role. They could have drafted an OT in any round, but they didn't. I said that it might be a small part of it, but winning is #1 above all else to get sales. Woody knows this. You can't have a successful franchise that goes 4-12 every year and expect sales, whether you have Tebow or not. To say that Woody gives winning the back seat to headlines is flat out wrong and borderline retarded. THAT was the argument. Not that it may have crossed their minds at some point. Obviously Woody likes the attention, and it probably factored in, but he wouldn't have brought him in if he thought it wouldn't help the team win. Did Woody wait to ship out Hunter for headlines as well? Was bringing in Sparano about headlines? Resigning Pou'ha? Schillens? It's just not a realistic argument and has no logical merit whatsoever. I don't see how anyone with an IQ over 20 would believe that or agree with Namath about it. It's stupid.
Shhhhh. Don't ask for facts. Namath was 110% percent right, so that means not only was he correct, he was MORE than fully correct about everything he said. I doubt Namath even remembers himself, what he said. He needs to lay off the booze.
Barcs- The reason why people question Woody Johnson's motives is because of his track record. It's valid to do so, don't be crazy. Obviously it's not in his best interest to run the team into the ground, so he's not TRYING to lose but he certainly tries to grab the lime light any chance he can.. I laid some of it out in my post to a Giants fan but its clear he's trying to get the headlines. Here are some of the many times he's tried to grab the headlines (I'm sure there is more). Were they all about winning??? In his era - Hiring Herm Edwards (a position coach) with a large personality, West-Side Stadium, Bringing in Brett Favre, Instances where he's been abrasive to the Giants because he doesn't want to be second fiddle, Hiring and throwing all of his support to Rex Ryan (huge personality), Letting his organization talk all they want, Drafting Mark Sanchez (large personality QB), Lobbying for Hard Knocks, Lobbying for Primetime (thanksgiving) games, Lobbying to play in London, Signing Tim Tebow (don't have to even get into that again).. You could even make an argument about Mike Tannenbaum who Johnson continues to support although the guy has been around long enough to build and rebuild enough that most teams would run out of patience of not-winning and canned his ass by now. He's lasted through 3 different coaches though. Why? He's "Trader-Mike" he's swings big trades that grab the headlines (that certainly don't always result in wins)... I'm not saying all of those things were right, but it certainly makes you think about it. He definetely doesn't want to be 3-13 every year, but from his seat as a business owner, finishing at least average and being the biggest story in the NFL consistently is a success. Is this the way he feels?? Idk, but it does make a little sense because of the above and because he has not brought this team a superbowl, but he has TIME and TIME again made them the Champions of Publicity. Joe Namath was right to question that.
maybe u need to lay off the booze barcs. Namath has been sober for years. if you can't remember these same exact threads from about a yr ago then stop boozing so early in the day and do some research for yourself.
I'm not saying you're wrong about Woody liking attention. He does. I'm just saying that winning is still first priority. He's not going to handicap the team just to make big news. If he has the opportunity to win a superbowl he's going to take it. You really think bringing in Brett Favre, one of the better QBs our of time, wasn't about winning? Rex Ryan wasn't about winning? Trading up to draft Sanchez wasn't? I've never heard of Sanchez being a big personality guy. I didn't follow him in college, however, so maybe I'm wrong. He's certainly been humble since he arrived here. Also Tanny made a lot of GREAT moves for us. Discounting that because of a few mistakes is silly. Don't forget who brought in all of our pro bowlers. But again, that's Tanny, and again, I'd bet the farm that Sparano was the biggest proponent of bringing Tebow in.
Honestly I don't remember Namath talking crap before 2011. I remember him talking halfway through the season, questioning Sanchez and Rex's ability to coach. What did he say last off season?
The entire premise of this argument is so fucking stupid. What owner wouldn't care about attention? Do the Maras or Krafts care any less about attention than Woody does? Come on now. Any sort of publicity puts your team's name in the papers, which draws more fans to the games and sells more merchandise, which leads to more revenue for the team to spend on players to win Super Bowls. I guarantee the Jets have made a shitload more money being the controversial/loudmouth team than they would have been staying quiet and on the downlow these last few years.
Honestly Barcs - there were many threads on this exact same topic (Namath honestly assessing the team and not being a big Jets cheerleader) during last season. Also Barcs, Namath wasn't "talking crap" Namath was pretty much absolutely correct in his opinion. So whether you agree w/him or not or whether you remember that these same exact issues have been discussed on here before - thats on you. The fact is that we have all been there and done that. If you want to attack Namath for not kissing up to the Jets - thats your opinion - however many of us appreciate Namath for giving us his honest opinion rather than some BS to make the fans feel warm & fuzzy. IF you want to disagree w/his opinion, thats cool too, but you need to come correct with something to back up why you think Namath is incorrect. But for you to sit there behind your keyboard and go after a guy for having a drinking problem even though he quit drinking a long time ago - thats a low class and lame attack in my opinion. BTW - Here is just one of the 2011 Namath threads: http://forums.theganggreen.com/showthread.php?t=67975
Mr. Namath, in 12 years of playing for the Jets you compiled a grand total of THREE winning seasons sir... It is time to shut up now k?
I think the point of contention is how you go about getting that attention. Are you getting it by winning, by talking shit, or by both (thus Joe Namath re-enters the discussion)?
