I respect Joe Namath for what he's done. But he just comes off like a crotchety old man anymore. Well that and he just wants to make out.

warren moon was just on espn and said essentially the same thing as joe. the jets lack anyone on offense who scares anybody, and they need to surround sanchez with playmakers in order to be successful. he referred to tight ends, wide-outs and running backs. not the quarterbacks!

Yeah yeah but Tebow as a quarterback beat the Jets last year and then the Steelers in the Playoffs. If Sanchez could have done either this conversation would be moot.

Sanchez did beat the Jets last year. Didn't you watch the last 3 games? :p

The Broncos were also 8-8 in a weak division and ended up winning it. Same record as the Jets, who didn't have that benefit. Sanchez has beat 4 separate teams on the road in the playoffs, including Peyton Manning's Colts, and Tom Brady's Patriots. Saying "if Sanchez could have done either" is silly because he has done it, just not last year. And despite the weak start in the 2010 Steelers game, we were literally one blown goal line sequence from having an OT game just like the Broncos did.

Because Namath isn't the General Manager... because he's not saying "It's a proven fact the Jets care more about headlines".. because he's not holding press conferences announcing that the Jets care more about headlines than winning....

The guy was simply asked about the Jets and brought up his concerns about the team, his personal concern is that they care more about headlines. that HIS opinion. It's legitmate because Tim Tebow gets major headlines and the Jets acquired him... It's legitmate because Rex Ryan always puts himself out there to get headlines... Etc. Etc. Etc. It's just Joe Namath's concern about the team, one that many people share. You really can't see why its not a valid concern for someone to have??? Do you live under a rock??

If the Jets plan to do what you say they are and it's a complete success, they go 16-0 and win the Super Bowl, Joe Namath still isn't wrong for having his concerns right now. He's just a fan who calls it like he sees it. He doesn't have to kiss Woody Johnson and Co.'s ass. He'll probably come out and say he was wrong at the time if he is and be happy about winning because he's a fan like you and me, but to trash him and say his concerns aren't valid shows you can't handle someone who disagrees with you.

You said his opinion is credible and a "damn valid point". I didn't say he can't express his opinion. I said that his opinion is baseless, not factual. I asked you to demonstrate why and you have not done it, unless you are actually claiming that Tebow makes the team worse. I don't like when fans talk out of their ass, whether their name is Joe Namath or not. I like when people discuss the game of football and back up claims. If you can't back it up, that's fine, and it's just his opinion, but it's still 100% baseless at this point. All you did was repeat your original argument that it was valid and Tebow is definitely not proof of our team caring about headlines more than wins. No team is that stupid. Having an opinion does not automatically make it valid just because others have the "same concerns". I want facts. Show me that these concerns are legit and how Tim Tebow makes our team worse than last year. Good luck.

Actually to be fair you kind of did say that earlier...

But for what it's worth I pretty much agree with you in the sense that I don't agree with Namath on this one (or many other things). I just don't get why you or anyone else gets offended or annoyed by what Namath thinks. He's just another fan at this point, yes he's a high-profile fan because he's earned that recognition, but you can ignore him or disagree with him just the same as any other fan.

Since when has "Joe Willie" thought seeking attention and headlines was a bad thing? I'm confused......

Wouldn't that be exactly the type of thing to motivate you to make a PR/headline related move if, as Namath asserts, you're more interested in winning headlines and attention? I'm not saying I agree with him, but there is some logic to his reasoning.

I think people are taking what he says awfully seriously. I think it's worth noting that he isn't some media talking head that is just trying to stir shit up. I think Namath actually cares about the team and is offering his opinion that they're doing things wrong; like it or not I think it's a valid point of view and criticism.

In essence, you are saying that he can't express his opinion because A.) you trash him and B.) There are no facts because they haven't played a game yet!!! That's what offseason speculation is about.

What do you want me or Namath to say? Here is a memo proving that Woody Johnson cares more about headlines than winning??

It's valid to be concerned with the direction of the team though. Hell there are no facts at all to go by other than the fact Tim Tebow was acquired by the NY Jets. Rex can say it was a football move or whatever but that still doesn't prove anything...

What if Woody Johnson went in to Tannenbaum's office and said "Get me Tebow"?? We have no idea how that conversation went. That's what speculation and opinion forming is all about. Namath thinks it was to gain headlines, maybe it was, maybe it wasn't but the New York Jets are obviously going to say it was to win games they aren't stupid. I think it was a little bit of both, but of course I dont have "proof".. because it doesn't exist outside of closed doors.

No, it's not silly. Another win would have gotten us into the playoffs and if that happened Tebow wouldn't even be here. Tebow is only here to diffuse the stain of missing them. And if he is not here there is no converstation and so it is moot.

I seem to remember early during last season how 85% of everybody on GG were angry b/c Namath answered questions honestly and was critical of the Jets even though they were predicted to be great - rather than act like a Jets Cheerleader in interviews. He was proven to be correct. I think he is also correct here when he states that you don't run the wildcat unless your offense isn't working.

Tread lightly on Joe Namath, when you lead the motherfucking Jets, the most cursed hated by god franchise in football...you're allowed to be as critical as you want to be.

    Namath is bulletproof for life

He was asked a question and answered honestly. If you agree with him or not, that is another thing entirely.

I think Namath doesn't want to see the Tebow show overused unnecessarily the same as Santonio and I don't. Say what you will about internal (or pseudo internal) dissent, but the messages seem to finally be getting through. Hunter and Schotty gone, Eric Smith effectively gone, linebacking corps starting to be refreshed, d-line investment. The pieces are falling in place and people like Joe don't want to watch it go to shit over Tebow. We've got a maturing gunslinger. Let him sling.

Namath has a ring. That qualifies his right to say whatever he wants, and it is one ring more than anyone else on this forum has earned. Funny how that works.

I disagree, it doesn't qualify him to constantly tear the team down. Namath has one Superbowl ring, how many does Joe Montana have? Did you see Joe Montana out there shoving the 49ers in the shredder when they sucked for all those years? Nope... the man had too much class and too much respect for the organization to do that. How about Troy Aikman? Is he doing that? He has more rings than Namath and he means as much to Cowboys fans as Namath means to us doesn't he?

Joe Namath is more than just an ex-Jets quarterback, he is an AMBASSADOR OF JETS HISTORY! Hearing Joe Namath diss the Jets is like hearing the President of the United States say bad things about the country, YOU DON'T WANNA HEAR IT FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES!

Joe Namath isn't taking his historical position seriously, nor is he showing any concern for the fans who hold him in such high regard. The man needs an attitude check...

And, it doesn't make him a darksider. He's concerned about the manner in which the Jet's are putting together a TEAM. Who's not....

    Coming into the year:

    Lacking leadership.
    Disgruntled players.
    Lack of production.

Oh, and the remedy, pretend like nothing's wrong. Then, half-assed commit to a major overhaul of offense, and half-assed committment to a change at the most important position on offense.
