So instead of taking care of the RT situation in March or April we chose to hang onto Hunter and trade him 12 days before the first game for a guy just as awful as he is, except we're going to pay that guy $1.55 million more, money that could be used on a real blocking TE or a veteran WR OR just money that could be carried over into helping us and our projected $18 million over the cap in 2013. Cool.
Teams make mistakes sometimes, should they have overpaid for a FA? reached for an OL in the draft? moves aren't just made for one season in most cases.
Wow, cant make any Jet fans happy! Hunter is gone, Shottys system is difficult and the kid has some issues. Bottom line is he is young, has potential, will work with talented Lineman already on Jets and staff and eventually move to guard to replace Moore. Great move.
I'm happy to get rid of Hunter, but now we're paying more for a quite possible first round bust with concussion issues. The contract's performance clause will likely make it easier to get rid of Smith if he stinks, but this is basically a wash when it comes down to it. Minor upside, Smith is younger and didn't play for Hawaii.
THIS You would think with the ass kicking pitt put on the bills there would be more important issues for a bills fan to worry about. :buffaloblows:
Glad to see Hunter gone. It took a GREAT DEAL of doing, but even Tanny when forced to has to admit he F'd up.
Seriously I dont understand why Bills fans are so confident. They should be just as concerned as our fans about the offense and their D is just not as good as ours. Not really that close either. They have a weak secondary and LBs. Their D line looks real good but thats it. Other than their RBs on offense they have very little talent.
Does this mean the O-Line coach will be dragged out of his office and shot? After his comments about having WFH as his tackle as long as he's still working for the Jets..
Makes sense that they would look to talk to Tanny though after the failed Otah trade. We struck gold with Howard so Tanny probably stopped going crazy looking for a RT. Still glad we made this trade though.
Picking up Hunter's option was equivalent to paying a fair amount for the privilege of hiding under a pile of coats in the corner. We still have a bad offensive lineman as a result only the $2.45 million waste in February has now ballooned to $4 million in August. On a team that had cap space to waste you could argue that this is much ado about nothing other than spending Woody's money on bad players. On the 2012 Jets it should be a firing offense.
gotta wonder if Seeing Brick limping freaked them out a little haha. At least Jason Smith has a bit of rust in that turnstile.
Buffalo has sucked balls for quite some time. I guess they think they will flick the magical switch and actually be relevant this yr. Having their fans critique us is like having a very fat girl hit on you. Sickening actually......:buffaloblows:
http://espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/sto...ork-jets-close-deal-jason-smith-st-louis-rams "The Jets had no intention of dealing Hunter, but they received a call from the Rams shortly after demoting him, a source said. Rams offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who held the same position with the Jets from 2006 to 2011, always held Hunter in high regard." AHAHAhaahahaHAHahaha, of course he did! AHAHahahahaahahahaahaha
Based on where the Jets were after Sunday night I don't think you can really have an issue with the trade. While the Jets shouldn't have guaranteed Hunter's contract, once it was a done deal (and later Hunter continued to be exposed) the Jets did a good job of getting rid of him. I don't think that the Jets could have done better with the $1.5M "extra money" for Smith. Not that I saw a ton of Rams games last year, but Smith seems to be an average (or slightly below average) starting OT in the league - based on at the stats that have been presented here. Maybe other stats would show Smith differently (worse), but I think people may be judging him based on his status as a #2 pick in the draft so his slightly less than average stats look worse in that light. For those poeple that wanted to cut Hunter we basically did that and picked up Smith for an extra $1.5M. And if he doesn't play more than 30% of the Jets offensive plays (assuming that Howard is the starter this year) next year's contract is definitely manageable. Did people think that the Jets could pick up a better starting caliber (or proven quality backup) OT in the league for less than $1.5M? Especially when you consider that the Jets would be fighting with other OT starved teams for people of quality released by OT rich teams that might be available after final cuts I think the Jets made out well.
1. For those naysayers: consider this. Jets OL on the right side need complete overhaul in short time. Moore is getting up there in ages, and Howard, while serviceable in preseason game against Panthers, leaves a lot of room to improve. Now, say Moore retires, and Ducasse starts at RG. Who do the Jets have for the backup role? Caleb Schlauderaff for the backup OC/OG and then nobody. Now, I believe I pointed this out earlier in other threads, but when you have a struggling OT, you have an option - you can move him inside. 2. So, my point is, Jets will still need to draft a blue-chip RT later in the draft, but this move can still work out in Jets favor. Jets do need depth issue all across the OL, and Smith can convert to OGs and provide decent backup coverage. (And if his PFF grades are any indicators, he will be a fine one at that.) Once Jets draft RT, they can extend Howard or trade him away for a pick and fortify RT position as well. The deal here is, Jason Smith does not need to be restricted to RT role.
