I feel a little better about the offense now. I think we'll be able to score TD's in the regular season.
First off. The Jets lost. Secondly. Moral victories will almost certainly earn you a healthy heaping of sloppy seconds. With that said. There was a marketable improvement over the last two pre-season games though there is a sizeable gap to fill to be constantly competitive this season. Mark Sanchez looked a lot sharper and was making quick heady decisions. I haven't seen him get rid of the ball that quick since his first season with the squad. When he had no fear. Once he started getting picked a lot he went into a shell. I hope this keeps up. He is also throwing indiscriminately to any receiver that is open. There were enough drops last night that stalled a few drives. That's on the receivers. He does however need to throw the ball away before he gets sacked. Howard looks fast, strong and highly motivated. This will only help Mark's confidence. And with the addition of Couples we will see the linebackers making more plays on the ball. With Wilks, Couples, Ellis and Pouha there is a strong possibility of getting constant pressure and forcing QB's to make the mistakes this D thrives on. Very excited about this. This front is as almost impressive as it was when Jenkins was in there. As far as the running game goes until they get their blocking assignments down they will struggle a bit. They should be gelling around game 5. By that time teams will figure out that Hill is Mark's new favorite target only to realize that the Jets found their run game. Which will open up Holmes, Keller and Hill. Now as I put this Kool Aid down on the table, I think the Jets have a fair shot of making the playoffs. That's where Rex needs to use his motivational skills. Keep them believing. If the defense can give this offense a short field enough times I think they can win games and stay in the hunt. Nevermind that if McKnight can do the same on special teams that would even more of a reason. Now excuse me as I finish my nice glass of Kool Aid......
I've never played professional football, but I'm guessing neither did you, so technically neither of us knows how it feels. That said, those are professional players and while emotions happen, constant poorly based criticism usually results in those guys playing harder. So there is an argument to be made that absence of TDs in preseason coupled with your-style "the sky is falling, we are doomed" sentiments should result in better TDs production when it counts. Did you just climbed from under the rock? Did you see that pathetic crap that was Jets O in the first 2 games? Yesterday was a very definite improvement! I thought you were spreading the wisdom about TDs, what our D has to do with offence not scoring any? Is this a necessary qualification for having an opinion that counts? So I take it you were playing football after all. So perhaps you do know how it feels to not have confidence. I wonder if that's the reason why you are not playing at pro level and spreading pearls at message board instead. Choked much?
its only the preseason. every yr fans make waaaay too much out of the importance of preseason football games. the defense looked good last night. the offense looked improved but with pleny of work left to do.
Sanchez has a better game if Holmes & Hill catch those 2 passes. BUT, drops are part of the game. I don't agree with Burress, we have 3 tall receivers now, and would like them to progress. Sanchez had 1-1 on the outside with Hill, and he should have just chucked it up in the red zone. That is the communication factor that needs to be worked out.
I'm not too worried about scoring touchdowns in the red zone. If I'm not mistaken we were #1 or 2 in redone efficiency last year and I doubt that is all contributed to plaxico.
Actually, I'm not rolling with the sky is falling...just pointing out that our offense essentially blows ass right now and SHOULD be able to put together one measly touchdown. And yes...it DOES affect confidence...also unlike some other sports football is a HIGHLY emotional game. I've seen confidence actually win games when the team winning had less talent. And let us put it this way...I played beyond college...so I KNOW. No...yesterday was NOT a definitive improvement...it was a mild improvement and to add insult to injury really showcased our serious deficiencies at receiver. What I meant was our Defense putting us into a position of near certain TD scoring via turnovers. The arm chair QB's can comment all they want about technique, style of play...hell I'll even listen to discussions about talent. What I will not do is listen to people, who have never played, talk about the emotion(s). Unless you have suited up then you have no idea. The emotions we feel as fans are far different than the players. Maybe you haven't thought about what it might feel like to bust your ass off all week long only to literally fail in your primary objective as an offense...and that is to score TD's. Easy with the nasty put downs...I've been around here a long time and I'm not into it.
The Jets may have lost on the scoreboard. But the defense won my heart. Fuck Tebow and fuck Holmes. This team has got to win games by stopping the other teams from scoring and waking up Monday mornings pain free. I'm hoping Sparano does a decent enough job so Rex can concentrate on what he does best....putting 11 nasty motherfuckers on the field.
We won't bring Plax back because Plax won't play for a 1 year contract with us again and we don't want him longer than 1 year.
Ok, let it be "mild" improvement. (BTW, how does your "mild" cancels my "definite"?) Then you're contradicting yourself. If Jets were running crap O -- you seem to agree with this -- why then absence of TDs is such a surprise after only a mild improvement? More to the point, the improvement came after a fundamental flaw was fixed (Hunter) so the expectations are that improvement will continue, eventually resulting in TDs. Honestly, you don't seriously believe that Jets will go TD-less for most of the season, do you? About emotions... No, I haven't played on pro level, but I reject that pro players' reserve the right for some special emotions. You mean to tell me that losing after 1 week of hard work (and btw getting paid to do this work) is somehow worse than losing after 1-2 evenings of sweating at "friendly" (and free!) practice after a full 8 hrs workday + traffic? Sorry, but this is bullshit. If anything, pro should take losses like ... well, like a pro. And if a "pro" can't do it, maybe he should be cut and not get paid for the workout. Lastly, if you want to avoid nasty put down, stay away from snobby "Played much?"-type comments.
I think Dustin Keller was our biggest chance of getting a TD or two. To my opinion, Keller is THE red zone threat that is already here. It was a shame that he got hurt though.
If Keller is the one who has the best chance for TD, and only for 1-2, then we're are in deep shit indeed.
Well, I'm not saying our best chance for a TD. It's more of him being red zone help. He can help spread the offense for Holmes and 'possibly' Hill. His presence in general can help the team. I've seen enough to know what Dustin is capable of doing in the red zone. Plus, Tony is a coordinator that loves the play action and making the TE one of the most viable options. Plus, he has the best chemistry with Sanchez out of all of the weapons. It's just my opinion in general. I'm just trying to be an optimistic jets fan.
