they have dropped quite a few this preseason so far, but it doesnt count so who cares right? As far as drops being Tebows fault, the drop rate stayed pretty steady with Orton and Tebow. Royal, Decker and Thomas were all bottom 20% in drops, but the difference is not signifigant enough to make a dent in the low completion %.
Yeah, it is. A small dent. Tebow had a low number of attempts, so combining above-average drops with his low number of attempts, it's there. I don't think it quite gets him to 50% by itself. Like drops in general, some of them were back-breaking to drives and momentum. Look, it's just a different way of looking at an obvious truth -- Tebow had two very unseasoned WR's as his only WR's. It should be conceded at the outset that this is not ideal for statistical completion rate. They can be great players, but anyone who's looking at the situation (and if it weren't involving Tebow) would say "I'd rather the young QB have more stable vets catching the ball." Drop rate is only part of that. They also would blow routes, drift on routes, etc. Doesn't mean Tebow did no wrong -- that's beside the point. The purpose is to evaluate a Jets player and answer the question, "Is he more likely better than that completion percentage would ordinarily say, or is it indicative." I say he's better than that.
It was a drop because it was off target, like many of Tebows passes are. Was it catchable? Sure, it hit his finger tips. It's a catch that most receivers would make probably less than half the time. When you throw low percentage passes you will end up with low percentage results.
I started running numbers on % drops. It appears that an average NFL team drops passes at about 9% rate. Denver dropped them at 14% so yeah you are right it would have made a difference, but does not account for the entirety of the problem edit: my numbers are based of 100% of the passes to WR and RB in 2011 as provided by PFF
Good point. If a wide receiver stretches and uses every ounce of effort to almost make a bad catch, it isn't a drop. Perfect example is Wes Welker in the Super Bowl. He stretched out fully and turned to face the ball and let it slip through his hands. The drop happened because of the poor throw.
Are we trying to establish that some drops are from poor throws? That seems an easy question. Or that the high drop rate of Decker and DT, in their 2d years pros and first starting, is entirely due to Tebow throwing "droppable" passes? Because it seems like the lecture about how "all QB completion percentages include drops" would also imply "drop rates compared across the NFL would also include poorly thrown balls." The point is that it was a high percentage of drops -- an interesting fact to know if you have a curious mind and are trying to contextualize Tebow's low completion percentage.
I was talking in generalities. A lot of the media/posters here think anytime the WR gets his hand on the ball he should catch it otherwise its a drop. It ignores the painfully obviously thing that not knowing where the ball is coming in, or having it come in badly will lead to a drop.
You're right, of course. But that's not how the stat is recorded. There's some subjectivity to it, obviously, but a statistical drop is a ball the receiver should have caught.
:rofl2: Decker and Thomas will have 1/3 of the drops they had last year with Peyton throwing the ball. Deeming a ball catchable when its coming at you end over end, and deeming a ball catchable that is not, are night and day. Manning/Decker/Thomas lit up one of the best defenses in the league today without breaking a sweat. I'm not sure Tebow has ever completed a pass in the first quarter of a football game. :rofl2:
2 of the INT's were tipped, and he missed 19 months. Tebow sure looked awesome tonight! 4/14 55 yards, 1 INT, sacked 3 times!
Manning's preseason stat line: 30-of-42, 343 yards, 2 TDs, 3 INTs. 96.9 rating. Completed 71.4 percent of his passes. Not bad for "staple neck" Can't wait to see Decker and Thomas explode this year, Tebow fans always complained about them.
Tebow sucked. whats your point? I did not bring up Tebow in my comment. Manning had been playing fairly so so until the 49er pre season game. and Denver also has to make it to the AFC championship game to better last year (as a team), should be easy now with Manning on board.
All Tebow has to do to better last year is not be the worst quarterback in the league, statistically. Oh wait, he's not a starter anymore.
lol, another "Broncos fan" who came over just to bash Tebow And they accuse Tebow fans of being obsessed.
Would you be sure and let us know when the NFL decides that the W-L statistic is no longer the most important one in deciding what teams do at the end of the regular season? Thanks. Appreciate that.
Be sure to PM me when Tebow is a respected quarterback and starter in the NFL. Look forward to hearing from you.
Apparently that is highly overrated, as most of the teams Tebow played against last year didn't respect him, and he made a number of them pay for it, gave the Steelers an early exit from the playoffs because of it. I think the last thing Tebow was thinking when celebrating the Bronco victory over the Steelers was "I just wish everybody would respect me".
