He's earned a chance to show what he can do. I wanna see this kid in action, there is no way he is worse than WFH.
You got it. "Starting" is overrated. It is more about how many snaps the kid has. And he has a few. Not a whole ton but a few. We'll see how he shapes up.
ok glass half full guys.... here i am mr glass half empty. dont we all think that if his issues were strictly his hands and that if it was easy to fix that someone might have done it in the last 3 years to at least get him on a 53 man roster? i mean as we said there was an udfa who played for the steelers last year. these guys if they have talent will usually find their way onto a team. i hope the kid does well. but i am not getting my hopes too high.
He was on the Jets 53 man roster last year. Howard has talent and found his way onto the jets. That turned out to be a great place for him to land since we had one of the worst starting RT's in the league.
My glad only gets so full in this situation, I don't have my hopes up that high but there is no way he can be worse than Hunter, so that is a plus. A meager one, but a plus all the same. I still think we'll have a few more options before the season starts, but that is a dangerous gamble that Tanny is playing.
Not to over simplify the RT position, but all he really needs to do is get in someones way for 3-5 seconds. Hunter was letting guys in that could have intercepted the snap.
I'm cautiously optimistic on Howard. He was on the Eagles 53 in 2010 and actually saw action. The Eagles cut him last year at the end of camp because they had a new O Line coach who preferred quicker, shiftier linemen and not because of performance. The Ravens picked him up right away and had him on the practice squad until November last year when the Jets put him on their active roster. It's not like he has been out of the league. He was brought in to develop in 2010 by the Eagles and now he is in Year 3. It's not like he is a veteran cast off. He is a young developing prospect who may get better. Remains to be seen if he can get it done but he has the potential to be more than a stop gap answer if he keeps improving so that's all you can really ask for when you bring in guys like this and give them a chance. It's worth giving this guy a real chance. He has it and he knows he has to take advantage of it.
im with you. there is no harm in seeing what he can do with the 1s this week and then the fo will have a better idea of what they need to get from the scrap heap. i have to assume they will definitely grab something off the heap, its just a matter of what they will ask out of that guy. if the kid doesnt show that he can be an option at rt, there is a bit of money tied up in hunter and us needing to bring in someone to actually play rt... is it entirely possible this guy impresses or gets cut/assigned to ps?
I don't know how to reply to this, as you are completely wrong. You say that they are going to overload the right side, and want to clarify that. The defense is only allowed to play 11 players, and if they overload the right, the left side is going to be weaker. We can pull to the left with Mangold or Moore, and add to our advantage. As far as counters, If we show run to the left, and the right hand side is still overloaded, the penetration on the right will open a natural hole on the right side. That is the definition of why you run a counter. In addition, we will see alot of screens to right, and most likely a screen to Keller. Keller will chip the LDE, and then flush out. Maybe I am miss understanding what you are saying, and if so, I apologize.
"He's a scrub draft pic that most of us never wanted to draft. He's never even played a single meaningful snap in the NFL AND NOW HE'S STARTING FOR US????? WTF!!!! Belicheck REALLY let us down by not having a viable backup. Who is this scrawny Brady kid anyway???? Can he even throw a football?????" just saying....give peace a chance!
We all know how Rex doesn't like to play starters (and I guess Tebow) in the fourth preseason game to avoid injuries, but Austin Howard isn't exactly proven. If he plays well tomorrow night, should he then play on Thursday? Or should he sit out that game? If he plays poorly, you would think he has to play the next game to make sure he is capable of starting, right?
From what I've seen (and its very litte) Hes a big body with surprisng quickness off the snap for hiss frame. Thing is he doessnt use his hands well and once he loses ground his footwork goes to shit. Essentially, typical case of the physical toolss being there but without technical consistency it doesn't matter. Hopefully he can become a avg player until the position can be addressed long term. Or he can develop into an above average player and beccome a long term solution in sense that he wont be a consstant liability or ever command a huge cap hit vs consistent production.
AH really intruiges me. I'll be watching him very closely tonight. If he looks even serviceable the pressure will be off the Jets in a big way. The Jets were glowing about him when they claimed him so we'll see. Should be interesting!
I'll keep my fingers crossed, but it looked like the Oline, Howard included, was getting blown up all the way into the 4th quarter both games. Yes, Hunter sucks but I'm not suddenly ready to get a good night's sleep because Howard is sarting in his place.
Any self-respecting Patriots fan can tell you that not only did Belichick know immediately that Brady would be as good as he is, but also so did every Pats fan. They're all QB experts, didn't you know that?
I've seen a lot of people talk about Howard and his poor hand fighting, and that is kind of a concerning thing for a lineman. That's mainly how they initiate blocks in pass protection. Its not just a little problem. So now I'm sitting here watching Howard in the Bengals game do slightly better than Hunter did last weekend and I find myself hoping some team will drop an aging veteran stopgap during final cuts. The guy looks lost.
Yeah you see what I said about his footwork going to shit as soon as he facess any resistance? I notice a couple times he looks blind firing off the ball only blacking the inside or outside of someone, whihc is fine if you can turn the DL and buy some time. But he's pretty horrible with his hands. For someone his size he should be getting a much better pop off hiss initial burst. My previous statement a few posts back was as positive as I could be lol, in reality this OL looks lost. the worst part is RT play is so bad it overshadows the fact Moore is half the player he used to be at this point. We need another OG too in a bad way
His performance tonight will tell us a lot about his character. Big time players usually step up in big time situations. For him this is a big time situation because if he sucks they'll replace him.
