You can't look at the NFL as a sprint but a marathon. When you take into account all the things that currently piss you off about the Jets just put that into the context of the fact that Rex's worst season not only was not a losing season, but a late collapse meaning the team played under its ability rather than over it. Bottom line: Rex is a winner, even if some of the other people associated with the Jets are not. In order to win a Super Bowl with Rex the commitment needs to be real and long term not year to year. Many of the greatest coaches in NFL history took a very long time to get to where they were. Not saying Rex will be but he should be afforded every opportunity to try.
QFT. I can't go through another regime, not this early in Rex's career. We need to be patient and develop this team. We all want to win the SB, but a foundation must be built and supported.
Is it that Rex can't build a young team or Rex isn't shopping free agency enough to bring in veterans? I can never figure out what today's criticism is.
Rex produces top tier defenses year in and year out. hes constantly admitting how hes learning on the job and is obviously changing his approach. I think he has too much faith in Tanny though. thats the only complaint.
Tanny's the GM, he's responsible for buying the groceries is he not? He should have faith in his GM. They are tied together pretty much with the Tebow trade.
thats fine but i think Tanny is a real big hit or miss GM. took them long enough to get some youth on the front 7 of the defense. and the state of the OL is pretty sad. for someone who preaches ground n pound as much as him you would think Tanny wouldnt let the depth fall to the wayside like it has. not to mention the musical chairs at offensive skill positions. specifically WR. I love Rex as a HC, basically im saying the premise of this original post is off base.
I can't accept the notion that Tannenbaum gets players without the CS' approval. That's not how you build a team, I doubt any GM around the league acquires players without the CS' approval. The scout team, HC/OC/DC, and GM come together and formulate a plan.
I don't see Tanny making the decisions. It's gotta be Rex going to him, telling him what he needs and giving his input on who he brings to this team. The Tebow trade, I have to believe that was a Woody Johnson move. It reaks of a marketing move more then a football move. That Tebow $ should have been spent getting a upper tier RT as opposed to a gimmick. If I didn't believe Woody pulled the strings on the Tebow signing i'd be calling for Tanny's & or Rex's head if this season turns into another disappointment.Especially if this offensive line breaks down and causes an already underwhelming offense to become our achielles heel.
Rex in my opinion really lacks knowledge on the offensive side of the football. He's improving in that aspect, but I don't see him really being a huge factor when it comes to offensive talent and evaluating it. Now he still has a say because at the end of the day he's the HC, but, there must be a lot of noise coming from the scouting department, Terry, and Rex himself. The question is, whose in Tanny's ear the most? And who influences his decisions the most? I can't either, but at the same time, there must be some sort of miscommunication. No excuse for the offensive line issue and lack of continuity on the offensive side of the ball, meanwhile defensively we've practically had the same starters since Rex has been here other than the safety and 2 defensive lineman that were drafted. So again, I don't think anyone is formulating some type of plan. They scouted a shit-ton of players, but what is our plan? Do we even have one? Continuity should be on both sides of the football not just defensively. That's one of the reasons why the offense hasn't matured. It's why I question our philosophy when it comes to building a football team. Someone's making the decisions - Tanny can cover this up all he wants, but the Tebow trade was strictly made for Woody and the potential cash he could earn for this franchise like you said in your post. No way do you not address the offensive line and acquire this type of player. Eric Winston was right there, and we didn't even place a call. That there tells me either they actually were dumb enough to roll with Wayne Hunter or they had higher priorities. We need more football-orientated staff in this front office. Ones that have common sense, because I don't think Tanny has that, and I think Rex doesn't have enough knowledge to really build a football team on the offensive side of the ball. Too many men know the business side and not the football aspect. If Rex wants to be the coach (and I want him here at least 7 seasons) than Rex needs to understand the other side of the football A LOT more. Once he becomes a well rounded coach, he's going to be the best in the business in my opinion.
From an outsider's perspective (and I've gone on record as saying I like Rex Ryan, and still do... I think he's good for the league)... The irony is that Rex kind of has shortened his own shelf life by being who he is - a bold, powerful personality. By making Super Bowl predictions, he's excited a fan base and gotten some attention but he's also raised the bar for himself and for the organization. Overall it's great, but it can't continue that way, and eventually you have to do your talking on the field. His career coaching highlights can't continue to be a divisional round win over a hated rival and two straight AFCCG appearances. Not when he himself has gone on record saying some of the things he's said. Ryan is a defensive genius - no doubt about that. As a head coach, he is still writing his legacy/story. We won't know how it ends until it ends, or until he wins a Super Bowl. If he gets the team to rebound from 2011, it will go a long way toward him being a fixture in NY. Winning cures all.
Here's a question, if the jets have a bad year, say 7-9 and the jets fire Rex, would he get another HC job? I don't think so.
Rex isn't toast yet. He is going to need to find a way to reinvent himself though or alternately to get better players than he currently has. As it is he's playing with better players on defense than he inherited but worse on offense. More troubling than the quality decline on offense is the churn involved. Of the starters on offense that took the field in 2009 only 5 will take the field in 2012. Mangold, D'Brick, Moore, Sanchez and Keller. If you think that Moore and Sanchez are not long for the field with the Jets and that Keller is likely to go free agent at the end of the year that makes just 2 guys on that side of the ball that started in 2009 and are likely to start in 2014. That's huge turnover and nobody in the organization was in a good position to make sure that it went smoothly in the past or will in the future. That's the Rex problem. He doesn't have his eye on the ball on the offensive side and nobody else does either. The job of the head coach is to make sure that the offense, the defense and special teams are highly competitive. On the Jets you have Rex/Westhoff on the special teams and they're pretty good. You have Rex/Pettine on the defense and it's really good. You have schmuck of the year as OC and the offense not surprisingly is not so good.
I think that the HC and Tanny collaborate on the talent moves. Case and point – when Mangini was here we hit on promising draft picks left and right. We had a decent draft order Mangini’s first year which helped but still – Mangold, D’brick, REVIS, David Harris, Keller etc. And its not like he didn’t have a bust along the way like VG – and we still scored a lot of young talent. A lot of our current young talent was acquired through the draft during the Mangini era. Rex’s first three drafts have not been nearly as productive. Tanny+Mangini = good talent – strong drafts. Tanny+Rex = iffy talent – iff drafts. Tanny clearly collaborates with the HC.
I love Rex. I hope he's here for a while. As long as he is here, we will have a top 10 defense in the league I believe. Everyone tells me his coaching style will eventually wear out. Maybe it will, maybe it won't, but I'm confident we'll always have a good defense with him here and the young talent assembled. Is Rex an offensive coach? Not at all. But I think he recognized that. He also looked in the mirror this offseason and decided to shut up a little more and take a little more control this year. You can see him calling out some players in the media, he used to not do that. We've won 4 playoff games and have not had a losing season in 3 years with Rex as coach, and that's with mediocre quarterback play each year, even worse in year 1. If Sanchez develops into a QB that can carry our offense, then that will be the difference. Quarterbacks can take a long time to develop, so it's tough to give up on him now. But whether it's Sanchez or someone else, we need to get Rex a legit QB. Pair that up with the defense, and we will have a great team for a while.
Yes, and Mangini had more balance in his drafts. The 1's were 3 on the offense and 2 on the defense. Rex/Tanny have just gone so heavily on the defense in the 1st round with 1 pick on offense and now 3 in a row on defense. One more point: Tim Tebow is on this roster instead of a RT or TE. Two TE's and Bobby Massie were taken right in the range of the pick the Jets traded to the Broncos. We don't know who made the call on Tebow but the Jets did nothing to shore up RT and TE despite knowing that Hunter was a disaster area in the making and Keller was likely to walk at the end of the season.
Thats a good point. It seems that we draft for defense and FA for offense. Hard to create stability on offense that way. I think part of it is Rex doesn't recognize good offensive talent so he goes with FA's that have a track record of success. I used to think Tanny was a quality talent scout - not so sure anymore.
Ill be shocked if we draft another defensive player in the first round next year. The offense is becoming thinner and thinner, the O line is getting older, Greene and Keller are free agents, just a big mess honestly.
If the Jets get an opportunity to draft a large and fierce pass rushing OLB they won't pass it. You're less likely to get one of those beyond the first round than a good OL or TE.
I suppose we can ignore the fact that the defensive players drafted round 1 2010 and 2011 are actually good players.
