It's nobody's yet, he's earned a chance by playing well vs backups and Hunter's bad play has opened a door. This is what the pre-season is for, this is why the first four games don't count.
The Jets have removed Wayne Hunter as their starting right tackle. Finally. Hunter was among the league's worst starting tackles last season, giving up 8.5 sacks and getting tagged for 11 penalties. He followed that up with a woeful 2012 preseason. Hunter is owed $2.45 million guaranteed this season, meaning his new role as a jumbo swing tackle is safe. New right tackle Austin Howard is no superstar, but he can't be any worse than Hunter. The leagues worst and the NYJETS FAILED to fix the problem in the off-season as of today. Whats Woody have to say about this?
Didn't give up a sack in either of his preseason games. Im sure he didnt in the first one almost sure he didn't in the 2nd. He was better then I expected from him to be honest. He doesn't get blown up or flat out beat like Hunter does so that is an improvement.
Howard played really well vs the Bengals backups in week 1. I'm not expecting a solid year from him, but the potential is there, especially as a run blocker.
John Clayton is speculating that we may trying to trade for a tackle from the colts by the name of Winston Justice... good fit?
And what do we do if Howard who is a journeyman blows? Man, did we screw this one up. Could ruin the whole season
The guy who Osi beat back in '07 for six sacks? Besides didn't the Colts just trade for him this offseason?
Then we get somebody else and he goes back to being not on the team. Can't hurt to give him a shot, he's been in camp, let's see what he does.
There will be alot of player on the bubble with teams that can probably be had for minimal compensation becasue teams will try to gwet something out of them reather than cutting them. My guess is that even if the Jets don't make a trade for a tackle, they'll be bringing some in when players clear waivers first week of September.
I don't know about Howard. But it's a good first step to get past this denial that the FO had about Hunter. So, they acknowledge he sucks. That's a positive.
The origins of the right tackle problem go back to the swing and a miss Tanny took with a second round pick on Vlad. The right tackle job was supposed to be his by now. Tanny created this problem by reaching for a project player with a high draft pick.
I think they knew, just didn't want to say it. Otherwise they wouldn't have tried to get Otah, who was a reach. After the first two games there wasn't much point in not saying it since everyone else was/is.
Manish Mehta @MMehtaNYDN Jets o-line coach Dave DeGuglielmo in May: "The last thing that I would ever want to see happen is not have Wayne Hunter as the RT" #nyj lol
Seems to me the Jets thought that maybe Hunters biggest problem was confidence and they were trying to build that up. Getting manhandled to the tune of 3-4 sacks in your first preseason action blows that out of the water though.
 Do you ever even read what you are responding to? I said a QUALITY RT, not Howard himself. I said I hope they bring in somebody else. Pay attention before making yourself look like an ignoramus.
