Sacks are just whistled, and scored a sack. No contact on the QB so they have to just decide it would have been a sack. But if you've ever been to a pro practice, you'll see they often finish out the play to take advantage of the rep. Get a throw in, that kind of thing. And the defenders often argue it was a sack when it's not scored a sack. It's a little more subjective without the contact.
Actually, it's just a sack, except when dimwit beat writers think they can drum up some weak ass controversy by not mentioning the sack. Some writers just straight up refused to mention that part of it in their gay ass tweets.
If the sack is not mentioned, it's like a tree falling in the woods. Nothing to discuss. In this instance, the play was scored a sack, the sack was mentioned, and a reader asked how could there be a pass and a sack. Watching practices live, it happens a lot.
