I think we would have had a very good shot, what everybody forgets is that AFC Title game was played in Pittsburgh. New England would have been under 2 feet of snow. We were built to win by running the ball and with dink and dunk plays while the Pats didn't excatly have a great running game. They probably would have beaten us but I don't think it is a forgone conclusion.
"Flash Gordon, QB of the New york Jets" at least he would have been if he didn't become the savor of the universe.
Voted for Chad, but always admired O'Brien for getting up after the beatings he took...After a 39-3 loss to the Chargers in 1990, the injury listed O'Brien has having a "battered body"...
Not really. He backed up his opinion with post season success for Sanchez. Thats not being homer. How many other QBs have 4 road playoff wins for Jets? How many other QBs have 4 wins in playoffs home OR away? How many other Jets QBs have been to two AFCCG?
I don't judge QB's by playoff wins, unless they won a game by themselves by throwing for 400+ yards in the game or 6 TD's or what have you. Football is a team sport. QB's get the credit, or blame, for wins and losses. I could make an argument for QB's losing games more than winning games. Take Sanchez for example, the team won not because of him but rather because of the teams Defense and Sanchez just not being totally stupid with the ball. Fact is O'Brien played for some very bad teams that gave up a lot of yards and a lot of TD's. He also played for an O-Line that gave up a LOT of sacks. Think Sanchez is under pressure? O'Brien was sacked 62 times in one season but he still threw for nearly 4,000 yards with 25 TD's and only 8 picks....and this was his second season as a starter. By contrast Sanchez last year in the "he never had time to throw and was always under pressure" defense was only sacked 39 times but threw 18 picks. And I'll remind you that O'brien didn't play when QB's were a protected species and the passing rules weren't as friendly as they are today. Sanchez currently doesn't enter in to the picture as one of the top 3 or 4 QB's of Jets history...will he in 3-5 years, who know's...but not playing the way he has been playing. Top 3 QB's in Jets history? Namath, Vinny, O'brien.
In 1985 Kenny O posted 3888 yards and a 25:8 TD:INT while being sacked 62 times That ALONE trumps Sanchez's career accomplishments to date. Sanchez won 4 playoff games with the help of elite defense, rushing, O-Line play, AND special teams. He could not possibly had more assistance without giving him a time machine so we could sign Bruce Matthews, Anthony Munoz, Jerry Rice, Jim Brown, and Shannon Sharpe.
Not that Im arguing Sanchez is better than Ken, but you did pick Kens best season in the NFL to compare against a very young career of Sanchez. Yes, I know that was Kens 3rd season just like Sanchez' 3rd season last year, but it was still his best season. Closest he ever came to such a season was his 4th year (25TDs and 20 ints = not so impressive). Sanchez had 32 TDs vs 18 picks. He had 6 rushing TDs. Thats a product of the offense that he ran and should be included in any discussion with his comparisons. And if anyone wants to bring in fumbles lost, that just tells you his OL did a bad job of protecting him. It doesn't mean much as far as evaluating him. He was sacked from the blindside several times when D'Brick was playing much below his standard. Not to mention, he had no deep threat which diminished the run game. Ken had Wesley and Al Toon along with Shuler. Sanchez had Keller, a lazy Holmes, and an ex-con Burress. We know for a fact Ken couldn't step u his game after couple of good to decent seasons, and thats why I'd take Sanchez over Ken. With Sanchez, there's a good chance of him stepping it to the next level.
Doesn't that just defeat your argument then. I have high hopes for Sanchez but with as every season passes his likelihood of "making the step up" diminishes. Post-season wins and comparisons with Eli Manning will only wash for so long. You already have the stats that Ken's third season blows Marks out of the water. What counts against Ken is that his careered tailed off without ever fufilling his potential but at least he made the grade in QB stats if not team stats - Sanchez is the reverse. I'm still waiting for the definitive argument that the reason the Jets made two consecutive AFCCG was beyond doubt largely because of Sanchez's QB play. This is a QB poll, not a team poll.
1998 comes to mind, 29 tds and 7 ints...if it wasn't for that blown achilles we would have had our 2nd SB win...
I don't think it's a very good argument to say that O'Brien DIDN'T reach the next level, but Sanchez COULD, so he's better. I picked his best season, but it was also his second season, a valid comparison, especially considering that we're in the golden age of passing right now and Sanchez's inferior numbers are thus even worse when adjusted for era. 2010 Sanchez's weaponry (Braylon/Holmes/Cotchery/Keller/LT) was every bit as good, probably better than Toon/Walker/Schuler. Wipe that excuse off the books. While Kenny O took a beating and regressed over time, his 2nd/3rd/4th seasons were all better than any Sanchez has had to this point. That 3rd year with a 25:20 ratio you call not so impressive, the rest is. 62% completions and 7.7 YPA. If Sanchez could even FLIRT with that, we would all feel a whole lot better. Also, this idea of counting rushing touchdowns towards Sanchez's total is flawed. We're arguing better quarterbacks. Just because he took 6 in himself rather than handed them off should not make his passing numbers look any better. Crossing out the quarterbacks, what team had more talent on the roster than the Jets in 2010? I know junc hates the Pro Bowl, but we had 12-13 players on the roster that had been to one. That doesn't include guys like Pace, Cotchery, Pouha, Keller, or Bryan Thomas.
