I look at our offense and I don't see anything that could be called a strength, just anemic results. Throw in turnovers and dumb penalties and it's too much for our D to overcome. Sure, it's the preseason, but haven't we seen this before?
Obviously top tier QBs are hard to come by, otherwise everyone would have one. The point I was making is that we don't have one and have never really had one which is why our offense has never been anything very special. Its just a shame that we have never sucked badly at the right times (unlike the Colts) or struck gold with a fluke pick (like the Pats) but it is what it is. I believe that Sanchez still can improve but he has shown very little to suggest he is ever going to be an upper echelon passer - if he does then obviously that is great, but as it stands he certainly does not look like one.
Your position on Schotty was that you were and remain one of the posters here who used him as a scapegoat. AT THE VERY LEAST people should consider that the Jets have a problem with their offensive roster that has nothing to do with Schotty, and that was true last year as well. I guess people have to get their jollies where they can, and since the Jets O looked awful on Saturday night, I might as well get a teensy bit of enjoyment noting that Schotty Haters here should be questioning themselves. As far as the "first hint of trouble" comment, are you serious? The Jets had obvious roster problems last year that were not corrected. They ended last season in putrid fashion losing five of their last eight, and three straight at the end. The off season has mostly been a combination of joke and lack of action. We are long, long past the first sign of trouble.
yet we had a great pass game in 2002. vertical offense and pass offense are 2 different things, not every pass offense is built the same. Still employed and we have had the best decade of Jets football in the history of the franchise. Fire him! fire Tannenbaum! fire Rex! Bring back Kotite!
The Jets didnt have a great passing game in 2002. Not even worth the argument. The were a WCO relying on YAC. Are you familiar with how the WCO is structured? The teams that win Super Bowls now have vertical passing offenses. And just because Terry Bradway is an incompetant boob doesnt mean we need to bring back Kotite. You're not winning a super bowl without an at least good vertical passing game....soemthing the Jets havent had since 1998 with a healthy Vinny and two stud WR's in Keyshawn and Chrebet.
In a good organization a decade of .500 football would clearly be a firing offense. I guess since the Jets have been so bad the same .500 record is cause for an extension. Because after all the Jets aren't very good and we should be happy they can play .500 ball since they've been so bad in the past. Clearly the Jets can't compete with a professional organization like the Giants and so to sell tickets we really need to do lots of promo stunts, and grasp at straws and whatever we have to do to look respectable. Since we're not a good organization like the Giants and can't possibly win the way they do, by building both sides of the ball through the draft and actually having most of our high draft choices pan out.
The record is skewed a bit since we lost multiple seasons to Chad injuries but we have been one of the top AFC teams over the last decade plus. The Jets have been every bit aas good as the Giants minus the 2 SB runs where they had a few breaks go their way which we didn't. Keep in mind the Giants won one more game than us last year and were on the verge of firing their HC again.
If all of your offense that magically fixes problems is 'under wraps' then they better unwrap it by the time the season starts. Not to mention, if you're relaying on a gimmick offense for production outside of one or two games then you better have a heck of a lot of gimmicks.
This franchise just never learns. They keep bringing in the worst talent in coaching. Tony Fucking Sporano? Really? Even Rex, my biggest concern was he was just another Buddy. Well I think he's pretty much just another Buddy. Having Holmes back isn't going to mean shit. His act is old already. It seems like every player they have with character ends up going elsewhere and they keep the wrong people. Its literally like bizarro world. I don't have to say the sky is falling...we can just say "the ground hasn't risen yet"
The Jets absolutely had a problem with their roster last year. As I explained earlier, things aren't so black and white. I'm not laying claim that Schottenheimer was the only problem. He was one of many. Out of all of them though, he was the top problem requiring correction. I honestly don't understand what it is about Hunter that Rex is giving him every opportunity possible to make it. I don't know if he has pictures or what. He should be gone. It is concerning that we're at this juncture today. The issues with Hunter don't change the fact that over 6 years Schotty's offense has been average at best. The Jets can do better. I don't know if Sparano is better but I'm certainly willing to give him the chance.
In regards to your Rams question, I was responding to someone else's assertion. They pointed to the Rams performance this week. I responded that is unfair. I'm making no assertion about either of those games myself. As for Favre, I can expect a veteran to have an easier go of it than a rookie who started for one year in college. Finally, I actually agree that the offense is better than it is given credit for. I just agree for a different reason. I think the offensive talent > Schottenheimer's scheme / playcalling. I believe that this offense can actually flourish in a better offense. I don't know that Sparano is that guy but I want to see him try. One thing I do believe positively in Sparano's favor is that if we have to run to beat another team we won't finish the game with 59 passing attempts... particularly when the passing game is struggling.
Your definition of top is what is skewed. Again you are taking middle of the pack and defining that as success. The top AFC teams of the last decade: 1. New England Patriots. 2. Indianapolis Colts. 3. Pittsburgh Steelers. *HUGE GAP* 4. Baltimore Ravens. 5. San Diego Chargers. *HUGE GAP* Now you can put the Jets and the Titans in there in whatever order you choose depending on whether you think multiple 12+ win seasons and a 6 game overall better record is more important than a playoff spot in the overall standings.
Don't people ever get tired of saying "we'll give him a chance" Sporano had a chance...he was running the show and couldn't make it happen. What on his resume makes anyone think that he's qualified to run an offense? Because Rex wants an O that resembles a relic? Because Tony screams at players then high fives them over a friggin field goal a nanosecond later? Really, I just can't for the life of me figure out what runs through Johnson's head. We can say Rex' D is great, but honestly I think its a bit over-rated. If he doesn't blitz every damn play his D looks pretty ordinary. Bring on the homers.
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/dal/2006.htm A head coach's responsibilities are not equal to a coordinators. Sparano failed as Miami's head coach but how many head coaches have failed just to go back to being successful coordinators? Sparano's never held the title but for all intents and purposes he was the coordinator in the year from the link I posted above. He was calling the plays. His responsibilities that year were equivalent to Schottenheimer's here more so than what he had to do in Miami. Rex has a vision for the offense... if we're going to trust that Rex can put together a good team then that vision needs to be followed. Schottenheimer did not follow that vision and based on what Sparano has done in his career and the fact that he came out of a Parcells system indicates he's much more likely to produce offensively what Rex is looking for. I just don't see how you give up on a guy after two preseason games. No one is going to even remember what happened this preseason a year from now.
Please explain how the Chargers are ahead of us when we have more playoff wins and are 2-0 against them in the playoffs ont he road at SD? You are just anti-Jet. They aren't up there w/ NE, Ind and Pitt but they are next in line w/ Baltimore in the last decade.
