The gif also doesn't show that Cruz was turning at the time, so if the helmet did hit first it's probably because Cruz was turning into the hit. If he had stayed where he was 100% would have been shoulder...in the back, but shoulder nonetheless.
I prefer safeties who prevent passes from being completed over the ones who deliver a youtube-worthy smackdown after the pass is already hauled in. Landry is a case TBD....

There was another play right after where Cruz dropped the pass with Landry right on him again. Big hits like that definitely affect the receivers play afterwards. At least will make him think about protecting himself when he goes over the middle.
You can be as pissy as you want about it but that doesn't make you right. You're actually dead wrong. The penalty you described above is closer to spearing, which is not one and the same with what the NFL has deemed a "helmet to helmet" or "leading with the helmet" hit for the past couple of seasons. Spearing is actually more dangerous for the tackler than the ball carrier, and is how a lot of spinal injuries have happened in football. Landry's helmet contacted Cruz under the chin. It doesn't matter where Landry's head is in relation to his spine if the crown of his helmet makes contact with Cruz before anything else. When I see that replay, I see Landry duck his head about two strides out from contact, and his helmet then smashes Cruz in the chin. If Cruz hadn't seen it coming he would have probably been injured on the play, or at least he certainly wouldn't have bounced back up like that. Speaking of iffy plays and leading with the head, then jpp sack on Sanchez was questionable too. It did seem like Sanchez turned in to the hit, but that was border line leading with helmet maybe more than Landrys hit.
These guys are all moving so fast, when you slow these hits down and over-analyze them a lot could be "borderline". I think the game happens so fast guys are just reacting, I don't think most of them are trying to hurt anyone.
Dude, he comes in with the crown of his helmet first striking the chest & facemask. That's probably called if we don't have replacement refs. They might also have called Wilson for PI in the endzone on Cruz, but that could have gone either way.
Looks like his helmet hits his chest first and then the shoulder. It was a spear tackle not really leading with his helmet though. Victor Cruz said it was a legal tackle so I don't see how anyone else can say otherwise. Its hard to keep your helmet from making contact when tackling someone to give someone a fine for this is silly.
...in 2008 the Giants were the #1 seed in the NFC and only saw their offense get derailed after Plax shot himself in the leg. 2010 saw them miss the playoffs after going 10-6, so while they get screwed by the standings they weren't exactly terrible. The only down year was 2009, their awful defensive coordinator put together the worst Giants' defense in recent memory. If you want, I'll be more than happy to point out things about the Giants you can be justified in mocking. It's not like they haven't given you material.
