If it wasnt for that punt penalty the Giants would have been held to only 3 points through 2 quarters. Thats solid imo, the Jets killed the Giants run game, the Giants couldnt get anything going, at all. The Giants recievers were held in check mostly, Cruz did catch a few balls including one on Revis, but overall most of the passes were fewer than 10 yards so it wasnt big chunks Also on the Sanchez pick 6, I saw what Mark saw. I saw an open reciever, but Mark underthrew the ball, and just made a bad throw combined by a great play from the defender. It really should have just been a routine check down, but Mark underestimated the defender....
I was satisfied from the defense as well. Holding a team to just a few field goals is not a bad thing in my book.
I foresee a lot of 17-10, 17-14, 10-7 type of games for the Jets this year. I just hope the D doesn't publicly snap on the O if they don't produce. If the Jets go 8-8 or worse, which sadly, I think they will, it will not be the defenses fault.
Seriously, it's sad we have such a talented D and it's almost wasted on our piss poor offense. I'm not saying it's elite but it's definitely pretty damn good.
Shutting down a team that had the worst running game in the league last year and is still dealing with oline issues isint really that impressive. Manning didn't see a lot of pressure and even running vanilla pass plays was able to move the ball. Going to see a better effor against a more complete offense before I declare the Jets on par with the '85 Bears. And even the 85 Bears had a running game and a QB who could make a play in a pinch.
You're also shutting down the team that won the SB last year. I'm not saying their offense is akin to NE, GB or NO, but they're pretty competent in their offense. Vanilla or not, we still shut them down and as it always is: Our offense is what let this team down.
Give me a break, you can sit there and say the Giants have the worst run game all you want, but the Jets did exactly what they were supposed to do, that is stuff the run in the backfield over and over. And not for nothing, many felt the Giants run game improved in the playoffs. Obviously Bradshaw is no A.P., but ask a Giants fan about him, most will agree he is a serviceable RB.
I agree. I guess the consensus is that if you play well it doesnt count (defense) but if you dont (offense) the season is over. Rich Kotite won (cant recall which season) all of the preason games.
The defense was fine and I am confident they will be all season. However there is only so many times you can put them right back on the field with how many immediate 3 and outs this offense is going to have this season.
Will be awesome when we finally get a QB that gets us a chip. We'll always have a good defense under Rex...now for QB...
Relative to the rest of the NFL, I'm confident we will have an elite defense. We lost 2 starters to injury last year and brought in help at all 3 units, and we were still 5th in yards allowed, if I remember. I just worry offense and special teams will let us down.
No but you also have a VERY capable QB and a good group of WR's. Vanilla offense or not, that team has a good/decent offense.
Good point about special teams. Obviously, Westhoff is a very good coach and we all love him, but ST struggled last year with bad penalties and TO's. That was balanced somewhat by McKnight being a very good returner. This preseason (and again....it's only preseason) the ST's again looks to be having a lot of issues. They need to get that straightened out ASAP. Trying to overcome what should be a poor-mediocre offense is one thing. The defense can't also compensate for repeated ST mistakes.
defensive line looks solid. landry when healthy, is a good player. i would like to see more sacks, be it a coverage sack or hustle sack.
Ellis looks solid today, but he looked like crap the last game. We need to be sure that he's the real thing.
How dare you try to find something positive in this preseason?!?! Just kidding. D is looking pretty good. Sure opposing offenses are pretty vanilla right now but so is our D. And a few guys on D have barely showed anything yet so hopefully there is more to come. Special teams may be a wash. We'll give as good of field position as we get... Conley ain't looking great. Its still really early for the offense. New system. WR injuries. Sanchez as a notoriously slow starter. They should improve. They could improve in leaps and bounds if RT can be solved.
