Exactly! If this team is going to rely on D to make it deep into the playoffs TOP and field position is critical. If the O 3 and outs and turns the ball over the D will not win games for us.
all the O has to do is cut down on TOs and even as mediocre as the D was last year we would have made the playoffsa, if they cut down on TOs this year w/ the expected top 5 type D we should have we shouldn't have a problem making the playoffs again.
While I agree... I think even more importantly than that is cutting down on penalties... false starts in particular. A lot of turnovers last year were directly due to the fact that the Jets always put themselves into a tough situation with all the penalties they were drawing. I have high hopes for discipline improving greatly between Schotty being gone and Matt Mulligan no longer disgracing a Jets jersey. Now that just leaves Wayne Hunter... Honestly how much better would the Jets have been last year if not for all the times they shot themselves in the foot? It felt like whenever they did anything they always followed it up with something boneheaded. They were their own worst enemy.
I don't see this dominating defense everyone keeps referring to. NFL does puts defense at a huge disadvantage these days. This defense should be good, but far from great IMO. They have zero ability to get to the QB. Old slow LB'ers. Cannot cover a TE. Safety spot is still a huge question mark based on injury concerns. If this offense is not good, this will be a very disappointing year. Unfortunately, I think this is going to be a very disappointing year. I really think between 7-9 and 9-6 at BEST, if everything clicks.
The same idiots who scream "BUILD FROM THE DRAFT DAMIT" are the same guys right now (3 weeks before the season starts) are now screaming "BRING IN A RT! BRING IN A 2ND WR! BRING IN A BLOCKING TE! BRING IN ANOTHER RB!". kills me
while Maybin has some speed, he is small and a situational player. Davis is a rookie who was drafted in the 3rd round, not sure how much is realistic to expect, and Harris is slow! I am not saying it won't be a good defense, but the idea that it will be dominating is silly IMO.
I don't think it was the OC, I think it was the OL. IF the Ol is much improved the O will be much improved.
Offense: RT Wayne Hunter -- 10 for 75 yards TE Matt MUlligan -- 6 for 39 WR Plaxico Burress -- 5 for 50 RG Brandon Moore -- 5 for 30 http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/jets/post/_/id/9975/the-jets-penalty-pals Two out of the four are gone and Hunter having the same issues as last year won't be tolerated very long.
I dont think an average offense puts the Jets in the playoffs if Sanchez is the QB because we have seen what happens when teams stack the box and blitz a lot with him back there. If Tebow plays QB and the offense is average, he might be able to make some plays with his legs but only if the play calls are good and only if our line holds up. I don;t have a lot of faith in the O-line right now. So I think chances are an average offense will not get the Jets to the playoffs but we have to realize that with Mark Sanchez as our QB, our offense will always be average unless we find a way to get 5 studs on the O-line and 2 of the best blocking TEs in the league.
Teams can the stack box when there is no threat of getting beat deep. Why do you think the offense changed so dramatically when we went from Braylon Edwards to Plaxico Burress? This isn't a Mark Sanchez problem. This could happen to every team in the NFL.
That's where Stephen Hill comes in to hopefully give us the deep threat we lacked a year ago. I don't expect Hill to catch 50 balls but I do expect the deep ball to him now and then.
Sort of. We need our defense to be what it will be and then we need our offense to put up an average amount of points but unless to cut down on the turnovers and help us control the clock. If we control the clock keeping our defense fresh and we are not giving the team extra chances with good field position through turnovers we can win a lot of games. Also we have to cut back on all those special teams fumbles we had last year.
We only allowed 4 more ypg than them. The vast difference between us and them is PPG, but offensive turnovers figure into that stat, so it's not exactly a surefire measuring stick of the defense's performance. If Sanchez can play similar to Alex Smith last year in respect to turnovers, we'll be in good shape. If he can score just as many TDs as last year, plus do that, we'll be in excellent shape.
I don't think you need a top 5 offense but I think you'd need a top 10 offense for sure. Anything after that, even with a top 5 defense, and I think you're going to struggle. Anything under a top 20 offense and you aren't going to win many games, again even with a top 5 defense. I hope I'm wrong because I don't think we have a top 10 offense unless Sanchez has a massive awakening or the Tebow-wildcat thing is insanely successful or Greene transforms into a top 5 RB in the league.
find me a team that has a top 5 D and a top 10 offense..it's incredibly rare. the assertion that you need both or you will struggle is baseless IMO.
Sorry, I should have been more specific: Struggle to win a Superbowl not just regular season games. Maybe that's still an over estimation of how good you have to be seeing as the Pats made it to the SB with a very good offense but pretty bad defense and the Giants can't be higher than top 10 in either category, if that. So, yeah, good point. If a top 5 offense and a crappy defense can get you there then maybe a top 5 defense and a mediocre offense can as well.
my arguemnt is that looking at the past few years...a dominant side of the ball can get you there with an average other side. My Prime Example: Packers in 2010 - Awesome O - Average D, SB Champions Packers in 2011 - Awesome O, Crap D, 1 and done
The Pats D wasn't nearly as bad as their yards allowed ranking, I would say their D was every bit as good as ours last year despite the difference in ranking.
