Report: Bucs “seriously interested” in Jeff Demps

Posted by Darin Gantt on August 14, 2012, 3:49 PM EDT

    AP
    Well, that didn’t take long.

The same day former Florida Gators playmaker/Olympic sprinter Jeff Demps declared he wanted to play football, one of the teams in his home state made clear its intentions.

Scott Reynolds of PewterReport.com reports the Buccaneers are “seriously interested,” in signing Demps.

Demps was a part of the American silver-winning 4×100-meter relay team, now wants to transition back to football. He wasn’t drafted, making him free to sign with any team.

But the Bucs, according to Reynolds’ report, were touching base prior to the Olympics to make sure he didn’t forget about them.

This one makes sense on a number of levels.

The Bucs could use another shot of speed in the passing game (they envision Demps as a slot receiver) to go with Vincent Jackson and what appears to be a good run game, along with some juice on special teams.

Demps, who grew up in Winter Garden, Fla. (outside Orlando), might also appeal to a fan base that has been sluggish when it comes to buying tickets. And that might be as important as anything he’d do on the field, to be honest.

WOw, biggest concern over the last week or more is that "the Jets don't have any weapons". The dude is fast, he played RB for 4 years at Florida and did just fine going up against the fast and big defenses in the SEC. He's a weapon and he's definitely worth taking a look at.

Perhaps we should sign Chad Jackson as well, and bring in Chris Leak for 4th string QB. Might as well look to bring in every former Gator who can't play in the NFL.

We get it, you are a die hard fan base that has been longing to have your players translate to the next level, but jesus christ stop ruining a JETS board with your Gator reunion fantasies for the love of tebow!

Let's bring in Johnny Lam Jones to personally coach him.

Some of you guys are very closed minded...

It's not like he would be brought in to be a feature back....The guy has world class speed and does possess enough size to contribute on special teams (I know he lost weight for the olympics, but his football weight is around 185-190).

He could be a real weapon on KR/PR and could contribute immediately on Read-Option plays as he has a lot of experience with it. It's not like has to block pass rushers on an option play.

Guys with that kind of speed don't grow on trees.

(I do agree with Catfish though....Rainey is better)

    You're right, there's little-to-no difference between the upside of a 2012 UDFA and a 2007 UDFA...

It's not about Tebow or the Gators. It'a about a possible weapon for the Jets

Quick question for you, what players and how many picks would you willingly give up right now to get Aaron Hernandez on the team ?? You know, that big weapon at TE/SE for the Pats ? The guy who can catch, run and block ?

Clearly it is about the Gators b/c thats the only reason you signed up for this site and are now a "Jets" fan. B.c the greatest hero your never-been-undefeated program ever had is a backup QB on the Jets.

I wouldnt be opposed to bringing him in and trying him out and see where it goes. Cant get any worse in the back field plus we are in need of a punt returner and another kick returner as well. 5'9 185 ish is like the days of Leon Washington so cant knock his height and weight we dont have that scat back right now either im not sold on Powell

Hmmm, I figured that it had much more to do with his 2951 yards from scrimmage rushing and receiving, plus an additional 604 return yards.

That he's fast as can be and was projected to be a 3rd/4th round pick if he had decided to play football prior to the draft.

Imagine that, getting a freaking 3rd round pick without actually having to use a 3rd round pick.

Nah, couldn't be about that. Has to be about Tebow and the Gators.

Also he is making all those yards against Sec Opponents and he is breaking away with speed on players in one of the fastest conferences

Would have liked this a lot more before camp opened than now. At this point, we already have 4 young runningbacks we need to evaluate (well, 3 need to be evaluated, plus maybe Griffin), so there's very little room for Demps.

However, we could use a scatback to go with Greene. McKnight has a shot, but the jury is still out.

The Saints should sign Demps. Let him play on an indoor track in that Offense operated by Brees.

I'm content with seeing what we've got at RB this year and then drafting one next year if necessary. Bringing too many weird projects into this offense should not be encouraged.

I'm pretty sure we have a speed back/dynamic KR in Joe McKnight.
